The 24 Rape Comedy

What’s with the Rape Comedy in 24? I am watching my first season of 24 this season, and it’s an entertaining show, but I don’t get the Katee Sackhoff subplot. My friend tells me this is a shtick every season where someone is pursued tangentially to the plot and basically raped either metaphorically or literally. I love Katee Sackhoff and I hate the way they are using here. What gives? It seems totally superflous to the plot, and is kind of a boring interlude. The idea that someone could pretend to be someone they are not and get into the Counter-Terrorism Unit is beyond inane. Why even bother with this bullshit?

Not to mention that it seems like they have setup another Rape Comedy for Renee, but at least that one makes sense in terms of the plot.

Is “Rape Comedy” a term you invented? Could you explain what the comic aspect is?

No, it’s what a friend of mine described it as. I guess the comedy comes in, with how unecessary and silly it is. Thought literarily a comedy is something that doesn’t end badly, though it’s a harrowing experience for the characters. As opposed to a tragedy which ends badly.

Um, you may not want to go back and watch any of the other seasons.

Right. I’ve only watched about 2 episodes before I swore off it forever. There’s always someone getting tortured (usually a woman) or buried alive (but it’s to SAVE HER! oooookay?) It’s like some weird fetish porn on national TV.

Yeah that’s the impression I am getting.

I should say I’ve only watched two entire episodes on purpose, and yet seen many many glimpses of it while my husband has watched for as many years as they’ve had “days.” I would not base an opinion of a show on two watchings. This is just a very obvious theme from what I can tell.

So apparently Terry Goodkind has some friends in television.

My point was, just about every season there is someone working at CTU who is an enemy mole, or a criminal, or somesuch. It’s absurd, but part of the fun is picking out the secret bad guy each season (once, it was the President of the United States).

The writers have freely admitted that half the time, even they haven’t chosen some of the secret bad guys or late-day plot twists until the season is already well underway.
