The 2nd Presidental Debate October 7, 2008

My take is McCain will be generally given this one. Expectations are high for Obama, not so for McCain. That they both came off as slightly more exciting than paint drying in this debate I’d say is a win for McCain. I guess we’ll know better in the morning.

MSNBC has an insta poll in Pennsylvania. They’re saying 60/40 Obama. Their insta poll is kinda like CNN, only they didn’t show the squiggle during the debate. Too bad, that was the most fun part of the night.

I had trouble getting on toward the end–it would time out. Election night will be more spread out–the debates are short and move fast.

S’okay.

On to the Daily Show!

I saw a lot of people getting their picture taken with Obama. Didn’t notice anyone getting next to McCain, but maybe the camera people didn’t pan out far enough.

It seems to be true that these two guys don’t like each other. Did they ever shake hands?

I found a link here last week that showed Obama was far and away the winner among independents after the last debate, but now I have no idea where it was. Something like…pollstersusa.com, or something like that. Help from the peanut gallery, please?

Michelle shook Johns hand, but did not shake Cindy’s. Not that I blame her. Is Botox and fear of commoners catchy?

The town-hall format was supposed to be McCain’s specialty. If expectations were high for Obama and low for McCain going in, then McCain already lost this debate before it even started.

I agree. And what is with Cindy? Snow Queen or what? The hoi polloi too unwashed for her?

AuntBeast–we’re having the same evening–looking forward to Daily Show.

He just answered the question better (IMO).

I actually feel the conservatives on this board are a little bit more tolerant of dissension in their own ranks than the Obama-ites are. I mean, jesus, I am voting for Obama and I intensely loathe Palin. But I think some of Obama’s ideas are pure bullshit and he evades questions. He just sounds really good doing it. I hate McCain’s healthcare plan, but he’s not anywhere close to incompetent. It seems you can’t say that without being snarked on.

also: “that one”. NOT a good idea.

Brokaw scores an F for selecting the most boring questions in debate history

McCain and Obama both score D for never breaking out of their standard stump speech material.

This was a borefest

I thought that was awful. He called him “that one” and said “this is X” (I can’t remember what X was. Don’t refer to your opponent like that!

GRRNNNHH! Hoi means the! Just say ‘hoi polloi’! I’m sorry, but this is really starting to irritate me.

I’d like to thank all who contributed for the lively simul-discussion. As I predicted, reading this thread was a lot of fun!

Although I am sorry I missed seeing McCain throw a punch

I don’t know what format this debate was but it certainly wasn’t Town-Hall in the traditional sense. Let me rephrase my earlier statement: because MY expectations were high for Obama, and not so much for McCain, that they both seemed to do more Palining and speechifying than anything else, seems more of a win for McCain.

Sheesh. I’m losing all my objectivity when it comes to Obama. I expect him to do so much better in these debates than he does…such a let down :(. Then again, what do I know? Tomorrow, like the last debate, I may be led to believe I watched a different debate than everyone else in the world.

Sorry, I was eating my beef with Au Jus at the Le Parisinne restaurant.

McCain came across horribly on a personality level, I think. Admittedly I’m in the tank for Obama, so take that FWIW.

  • Rambled a lot, went negative even more

  • Still refused to look at Obama or keep still while Obama spoke

  • Referred to a senate colleague as that one; that was a truly repulsive amount of dismissive disrespect

  • Wouldn’t shake hands at the end, though Obama went up to him – instead just patted Obama on the back

  • Condescended to the second questionner by saying “you probably never heard of Freddie Mac or Fannie Mae”

I don’t think that shit flies very well.

Frankly, I blame the debate format: “Explain the entirety of your foreign policy. In two minutes.” Since that’s utterly impossible I don’t blame the candidates for turning to sound bites. I don’t blame them, but I don’t like it. I’d rather see 3-5 minutes, 3-5 minutes, then 2-4 minutes for rebuttals - let them TALK. I really do want to hear what they have to say; the nightly news can feed me the soundbites tomorrow.

I just realized the last debate will be held less than 7 miles away from my house. Hey, who gets the tickets?

Now that you all know where I live, you wanna come over for some pie?
