The Age of Ultron Seen It Thread

Just so you know where I’m coming from, prior to watching AoU, I’d seen, in order, Iron Man 3, Captain America 2, Guardians of the Galaxy and The Hulk movie with Norton. (Superheroes are not my thing but my friends like them and I like my friends.)

Other than some of the threads on this board I don’t know anything else about the world except what has been explained in these movies.

My assumption was that Vision is the raw psychic power of the alien Mind Stone combined with the technologic capabilities of Jarvis and both of them boosted by Thor’s lightning. I didn’t initially find the character confusing but I was surprised to see him in the scene at the end with Avengers 2.0 because he feels a bit otherworldly to be hanging around as part of a super-sized combat team. I’d have thought he’d disappear off to some esoteric corner of the multiverse with a chunk of Ultron to debug.

I thought it was a fine popcorn flick, but it has the same problem that so many action and superhero movies have which is that by the 30th time Natasha* has ripped an Ultron body to pieces, the tension is gone.

Someone asked for non-sexually-informed responses to the scarlet witch: I found her more visually interesting than Scarlett Johannson but I didn’t think she really stood out compared to the rest of the performances. That being said, I would very much enjoy a Scarlet Witch-focused film should Marvel be looking in this thread for directions to expand. Also, I agree with the previous poster who thought her initial scenes made her look far more creepy than she ended up being.

I was also slightly confused (and this is probably because I haven’t seen so many of the movies) as to the relationship between Natasha and Banner because after Cap 2 I was under the impression she was at the very least carrying a torch for the archery dude.

Ant-Man looks terrible and my friends are going to drag me to the F4 film, I can just feel it.

*Chosen for no other reason except that absent other factors, I would expect her to have the most difficult time destroying a big metal robot.

He’s also made out of vibranium (the same material that Captain America’s shield is made of) so he’s probably virtually indestructible. We’ve seen Iron Man’s repulser rays and Thor’s Hammer bounce off Cap’s shield.

Why? Hawkeye wasn’t in or referenced in Cap 2.

The Banner/Natasha stuff is supposed to come out of left field because although we haven’t seen these characters together since the first Avengers movie…they have a whole life and experience going on in the two-wish years since then. We know they have been working closely together because they have developed a dialogic structure to help calm down the Hulk (the lullaby) and return Banner to himself. So the audience is put on equal footing with Banner and his surprise at Natasha’s flirting…and then Cap confirming “Yeah, she’s not playing you, dude. That’s legit”

Where I think that plot got stupid was at the end when she says to Fury “Did you know this would happen?” referring to her and Banner developing feelings and Fury is all ::shrug:: “Yeah, I thought it might.”

At one point, the camera pretty specifically notes that Natasha is wearing a necklace with an arrow charm on it which everyone I saw it with took to mean there was something going on.

Re: Ultron, I am pretty sure they motion captured James Spader since Ultron moved a lot like him. I thought that was actually pretty cool myself.

Re: Falcon. I know it’s a comic book movie but I don’t think Falcon could fly that fast to get there in time like Iron Man and War Machine can but I suppose he could have road in on the SHIELD boat.

I’m still not sure that the Vision has his density control powers in the movieverse. Yes, he floats around; that tells us nothing, as flying is a typical comic book power that lots of people have. No one blinks an eye if a superhero flies.

But the only support for his density control was that he stuck his fist into some of the Ultron bots to kill them. But he’s made of vibranium. Sticking his fist into things isn’t exactly a stretch for him. And the shots were so quick, you couldn’t tell if he was phasing his fist into the bots, or punching his fist into the bots.

War Machine arrived with the helicarrier (“Show them our defenses”). Falcon would’ve actually made more sense to have brought along – his former job was pararescue. Since they were going on a mid-air rescue mission, the flying rescue guy is kind of a no-brainer.

As a long-time comic book and superhero fan: if your friends drag you to that F4 film, they are very bad people and you should punish them by scuffing their mint-in-box collectables.

The whole point of the new body was that Ultron had designed it as an upgrade of his current body. Otherwise he wouldn’t have been trying to download his personality into it. So Vision’s body must be superior to Ultron’s.

Just installing the Mind Gem makes it superior to Ultron’s prior body, plus its pseudobiological nature (just like dad’s, but better). The requirement that it be an improvement does not necessitate that it have density control powers.

That would be Stan Lee and Roy Thomas in the 1960s, but somewhat based on an earlier character by Kirby and Joe Simon from back in 1940.

I agree it doesn’t require that specific power (although it did come from the source material). My point was that it should be expected that Vision would have some powers that were better than Ultron’s.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t recall a Spiderman cameo in Age of Ultron. But here he is in the poster.

And this isn’t some fan made-up poster. I was checking showtimes at a local movie theater and this is the poster they’re using on their website for the movie.

It is a fan made poster.

All I can say is “meh”. It had some good parts which made it worth watching, but it was nowhere near as good as Avengers, or Dark World or Winter Soldier.

How are they still keeping Coulson’s survival a secret

I’d wager that, since the chain of connections leads to Spiderwoman, that’s part of Sony’s piece of the Marvel pie.

With LOTR being the obvious exception…

I’m not sure how having a piece of paper that says “Bruce Banner = The Hulk” would have saved Johannesburg…

For me, one thing on that list would have been “Wield Mjolnir.”

Saw it last night. I liked it quite a bit, but my initial impression is that I liked the first one quite a bit better. Maybe that will change after I see this one on Blu-ray a few times.

I have read this entire thread and I have some questions and thoughts that may get me thrown into the “didn’t pay attention” group. Show mercy.

  1. So…is Avengers 3 going to feature the new crew along with Black Widow and Captain America? I mean…not Iron Man, Thor, and Hulk??? I hope not, I want to see these heroes.

  2. I did hear Ultron say something about the only living things being on earth would be made of metal.

  3. Hulk vs. Iron Man feels like something the studio required Joss Whedon to do.

  4. Hawkeye has a family? Weird. Felt like they wanted to make us feel better that Black Widow is now in love with Banner.

  5. I did notice some CGI flaws, even including scenes where Hulk looked unfinished. I’m guessing they were very tight on getting this movie done in time for release. It might even look better on Blu-ray if they finish it more.

  6. I also thought Ultron’s lips moved and it looked weird.

  7. I thought the voice of the new JARVIS sounded like Pepper Potts, but I guess we have found out it was a new voice.

Anyway, neat movie. My favorite Marvel movie is actually Iron Man 3, though.

Oh. So…

  1. Uh, was it just that JARVIS is not human so he can pick up the hammer? Is it that simple or is there more going on here? Could Ultron have picked it up?

No, he could pick it up because, like Thor, he’s worthy to wield it. Ultron may be a machine, but he’s still evil, and while Mjollnir isn’t exactly sentient, it’s “worthiness” enchantment is generally something that can’t be gamed around. Is “knows” if it’s being wielded by a person or not, regardless of wether that person is flesh and blood, metal, or some combination of the two, like the Vision.

Rumor has it that the 2 part Avengers: Infinity War movie will bring back all or most of the superheroes we have seen in one way or another. This is the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline. Iron Man will definitely be in Captain America 3 where he can Cap have a big disagreement over the MCU version of the Superhero Registration Act. The Hulk vs. Iron Man fight sets that up. Thor may pop in for a cameo during Dr. Strange or Guardians of the Galaxy 2, but he’ll be back fulltime in 2017 setting the stage for Avengers 3.

They were probably trying to fool you into thinking he was going to die

That’s the impression I got. Remember Cap and Iron Man discussing this at the end? Somebody mentioned if you put the hammer in an elevator, can you still move the elevator

“The elevator is not worthy.”

Black Widow: Can somebody do something about that bunker?
Hulk: SMASH.
Black Widow: Thank you!
