The Amazing Race 12/12/14 - "Hooping It Up"

Wow. I certainly wasn’t expecting that…

.
Or that…

I thought it was odd when Phil said the last team to check in MAY be eliminated. Of course they will! I thought. It’s down to the Final Three!

They really have been shaking things up this season, that’s for sure.

No mention of a speed bump, either.

No, but he did say he’d be eliminating one team during the final leg.

They also didn’t mention a prize for finishing first on that leg. Just went directly into the next (final) leg.

Unless I missed it

I caught that too, and had the same thought. I’m quite happy about it, I really don’t like the wrestlers and do like the candy girls.

I wasn’t happy about this leg - all physical tasks (biking or basketball followed by hauling heavy objects) in that heat? There was no way the physically stronger teams could go wrong.

I was also confused at first when I heard “MAY be eliminated.” I thought they were just trying to mess with us, since of course one team will be eliminated! So that really was a surprise!

My favorites are the wrestlers, I hope they win. They just seem to be having so much fun with it all the time.

Kudos to the Amazing Producers for some inspired task programming. The last leg got them out of the city almost immediately after landing at the airport. I was a bit disappointed that we wouldn’t actually see any of Manila. But this leg brought them right back into the heart of the city, into one of the most crowded areas in the middle of the day, with the pit stop in the historic walled city of Intramuros.

Amy really looked bad heading into the Pit Stop. The coldness and shaking in the heat, I thought heat exhaustion for sure.

The producers finally let slip some of the surfers’ god-bothering.

I got confused when they showed the Scientists and the Dentists going one way and the Wrestlers and Surfers going another way. I thought for sure the Wrestlers and Surfers didn’t quite follow the directions of going to the one station, then changing jeepneys and going to the Detour. Also, when the Scientist’s and Dentist’s jeepney ran out of gas and it said, “Phil Up” at the gas station, I thought for sure that was going to be something, but it was never really mentioned. Am I the only one confused about this?

Rhiannon - The jeepneys made one big round circuit on their routes. The wrestlers and surfers realized that although the jeepney they were on would eventually get to the destination, if they crossed over to the other side of the road and picked one up that were already finished with most of their route like this u instead of O. Basically, the destination was behind them and they took the more direct route. And I think the PhilUp was probably something like Philippines Oils’ trademarked saying.

The wrestlers have been entertaining and they made it to the end. They win. It doesn’t matter who actually wins the million. Staying on my TV for the whole season is a big win.

Stoner Jesus freaks are preferable to sober Jesus freaks, IMHO, FWIW.

The gas station was called RePhil. Jeepneys ply set routes just like buses. As explained on the show, they go up to one terminus on one side of the street and you can usually catch them going to the opposite terminus on the other side of the street. I agree that the printed directions were a bit confusing.

The Final Episode with four teams must have wrecked zut’s taxi assessment for the week.

Definitely the tasks were designed for the Wrestlers and not the Scientists.

It makes me wonder how the Surfers would have done with the bicycle detour and the Scientists would have done with the Basketball detour.

Driving those bikes with one would be tough, and I doubt the Scientist spent too much time playing B-Ball in grade school. (could be wrong on that though).

The “Pit Stop” was essentially not one. They didn’t stop racing and no prize was given. Glad the Scientists are still in since they are the only team left I like (Poor Bikers. Why, oh why, did you go for that Fast Forward? :)).

Also I think I am going to stand by my assertion that the dentists are a bad team. They constantly make mistakes and I think they only have the wins they have because the other teams around them were worse.

I was wondering what was going on when I saw the overhead shot of the Scientists coming in. I saw Phil still had a clue and envelope in his hands and wondered why.

I can’t stand Brooke, she is so defeatist and whiny.

Yikes! Busy weekend this last couple of days, what with the holidays and all. That delayed the…

Taxi Assessment:

Stuck in the Desert and Officially Detained - or, Philiminated with extreme prejudice.
Lisa & Michelle (#MiamiRealtors) and Dennis & Isabelle (#TheDatingCouple) & Michael & Scott (#TheFirefighters) & Keith & Whitney (#TeamNashville) and Shelley & Nici (#MomDaughter) and Tim & Te Jay (#CollegeSweethearts) and Kym & Alli (#TheCyclists) - Already eliminated.

Flat Tire - or, not likely to get anywhere soon.
No one.

Stopping for Gas - or, not broken-down, exactly, but not a good sign.
No one.

“Rapido! Por Favor?” - or, making meaningless ineffectual comments from the back seat, but in no immediate danger.
Brooke & Robbie (#TheWrestlers) (up from “Flat Tire”) - A really impressive leg from Brooke & Robbie, if by “impressive” you mean “not screwing up nearly as much as the other teams” (which, to be fair, i a pretty decent approximation of “impressive” on the Race). They managed to find their jeepney immediately and head in the right direction (pretty amazing for the wrestlers). They didn’t lose even one clue. They pretty much killed both their Speed Bump and the Detour. Their only stumble was Robbie missing the posted list of deliveries at the Roadblock, but it wasn’t like he was the only Racer to do so. All in all a good leg, but a lot of their success depended on other teams’ failures. Snarkiness aside, that’s not something you can depend on in the final leg, and if anything the wrestlers are the most likely team to crash and burn in the final.
Maya & Amy (#SweetScientists) (holding steady) - I wonder sometimes if the producers shouldn’t be paying more attention to the risks of dehydration. You’re requiring Racers to do really physical tasks, quickly, in a hot and humid climate they’re not used to. I see Racers drinking from water bottles fairly often, so presumably they’re being provided with water somehow, but apparently not all Racers are making good decisions on when to hydrate. And speaking of decisions, Maya & Amy found a way to immediately blow their short lead over the two trailing teams by taking the wrong-way jeepney. If you’re an elite team, you can (sometimes) absorb a mistake like that, but there’s no way Maya & Amy can afford those mistakes… especially in the final leg, and especially with Amy still limping.

In the Passing Lane - or, ahead of the pack, but not quite comfortably.
Adam & Bethany (#SoulSurfers) (holding steady) - I like the way Adam & Bethany are so laid-back about everything, but Adam really shouldn’t be so laid-back that he forgets what he did with the clue. That mistake clearly cost them time, and there’s no telling how long they would have been wandering around had he not finally found it. Still and all, under-reacting may be a better long-term strategy than over-reacting, and the surfers are obviously still in the race.
Misti & Jim (#TheDentists) (holding steady) - Heh. Jim picks the worst times to tag along with other teams. A couple weeks ago it was the flight to Singapore with the surfers, this week it’s the wrong-way jeepney with the scientists. Possibly a strategically sound choice this week: if they wound up going the wrong way (which they did), they could almost certainly beat Maya & Amy at later tasks (which they did), and avoid last place (which they did). I doubt that was Jom’s actual thought process, but it worked well enough this week.

Cruisin’ with Earl - or, drivin’ on the shoulder, takin’ shortcuts, and generally kickin’ butt.
No one.

I wasn’t too keen on the wrestlers at first, mainly because I find Brooke rather annoying, but there’s no denying the fact that they’re still in this thing. And Brooke’s got some game- who knew?!?!

I like (or don’t dislike) all of the remaining teams. So that’s nice. Though Maya and Amy are this season’s team where they get to the end and it feels like they’ve never really been in the race.

Don’t feel like drawing out the chart but I was wondering if the changes to final leg (extra team in) was at all contingent on whether or not the Dentist’s pass was used or if that was just them trying to do something new. Will be curious to know if the teams will be informed of the mid-leg elimination before it happens.
