Was it an editing trick or was Myrna really just kicking back on the dhow, waving her little Amazing Race flag while Charla got sick over the side? Between the Tim Gunn quote, the stopping for fruit and various other actions, I love Danny and Oswald.
There was another season where the third-place team did not cross the finish line – in season 4, David & Jeff impetuously took a flight to Sydney thinking they could get to Tokyo more quickly from there. However, they got stuck in Sydney and had only made it to Hawaii when Chip & Reichen crossed the finish line in Pheonix. When they got their clue on a beach in Hawaii, it told them that C&R had won the race.
Who needs Rainman when you have Wikipedia? Eight teams were directed to the Pit Stop in the middle of legs rather than being made to complete additional tasks after every other team had completed the leg:
Paul & Amie, Leg 5, Season 1 (in Sfax, Tunisia)
Peggy & Claire, Leg 3, Season 2 (in Cape Town, South Africa)
Shola & Doyin, Leg 4, Season 2 (in Namibia)
Mary & Peach, Leg 7, Season 2 (in Hong Kong)
Michael & Kathy, Leg 5, Season 3 (in Fez, Morocco)
Andre & Damon, Leg 7, Season 3 (in Füssen, Germany)
Peter & Sarah, Leg 6, Season 10 (in Kuwait)
I noticed that, too, but I don’t think it’s quite that bad. I’ve seen Uchenna & Joyce on other TV shows since their first appearance on the Race, and they seem fine. IIRC, she was a little “distant” last time, too; she is just as competitive as he is, and not quite as much fun. I also suspect that are still deep in the thick of their infertility struggle, and that stuff is Bad News. When we went through it, I had a time when I didn’t want my husband to touch me. Those hormones do funny things to you, not just physically, but mentally as well.
(Which is why part of me wishes they would just stop trying and decide to adopt, but that is a decision that everyone must come to on their own, and I know it wasn’t easy for us.)
I love the level of detail, like where it says “book in upstairs office” and “stop to get fruit.” I don’t take those kind of notes.
Exactly. The 4 teams who went up to the office got on the standby list first, and were the only ones to get on the plane. Of course, Eric & Danielle were removed from the plane, but because of this they also got priority standby on the NEXT plane, which they got on, but the Guidos & Teri & Ian didn’t. As I said, sometimes it’s hard to tell if you are making the right decision, but that’s part of the game…it’s still your decision to make, and not entirely a matter of luck.
I did not see the green in the clue, but I was also surprised that there was not a FF, considering the previous NEL. I wonder if they decided to edit it out, because no one took it. It could be that Joyce & Uchenna knew that they were far enough ahead of the Guidos & Ian/Teri that they knew they didn’t need the help of the FF. With all the time the editors took to tell the story of the flights (wasn’t it at least 1/2 the show?) that they didn’t have time to get into the FF decision-making process, so they just cut it out altogether.
Thanks, Otto. I wish wiki had the information on what sort of penalty there was for that, if any. I’m also embarrassed to call myself a TAR fan and not realize that that happened so many times.
I’m pretty sure that any team that was directed to go directly to the Pit Stop without completing all the tasks, found out when they got to the Pit Stop that they were the last team to arrive, and had been eliminated from the Race.
As noted, these were not penalty situations because the teams were already Philiminated. There have been instances in which teams arrived at a Pit Stop without completing or correctly completing all the tasks in a leg. There has been no penalty since season 1 if it’s a Detour but the team must go back and complete any tasks that they missed. Examples include: from Schmirna and Mirna’s first season, a couple of teams (Chip & Kim and one other) ended up in the hotel casino playing roulette (a Detour task) and had to return to the hotel to pull the Detour clue; and from this season, the BQs stumbled into the rafting task without pulling the clue and Phil sent them back (but still finished in the same position). In season 1, a team quit a Detour and were penalized a full 24 hours, which kept Team Guido (who had won a Fast Forward but had fallen far behind) in the Race.
On Roadblocks, failing to finish (at least since Rob & Amber’s first season) incurs a four hour penalty. Rob & Amber and two other teams incurred it for quitting the infamous Meatblock and Hayden & Aaron incurred it on the Lockblock in China when Team Hornio lucked into their lock at the last second.
There was some task in Africa where someone forgot to grab a stick or something but I can’t remember what team or season or if that was a Detour or just some random task. They didn’t incur a penalty but had to go back and grab the stick.
Oh! I can’t believe I missed the Andre comment. I love Tim Gunn (and Danny and Oswald). Although I thought the BQs were awful in their comments about Chara and Mirna, I’ll admit that I think their next reality show should be “What Not to Wear”. The comment would be the sort of thing my sister would say to me. And not knowing what a catamaran is = not knowing what a scarab is. Where have these people been?
I’m forgetting the details of this one. I remember they had to open a series of locks (up high somewhere - the Great Wall or the top of a castle?), and they had a lot of trouble. Who was Team Hornio and what did they do to help or hurt Hayden and Aaron?
Team Hornio was Momma’s Boy and The Bitch (Adam and Rebecca). What they did to hurt Hayden and Aaron was not quitting after H&A did…if Team Hornio hadn’t been able to find the lock and quit in frustration, they’d have incurred a 4-hour penalty as well, but right after H&A quit, Rebecca found their lock and they pulled ahead of H&A because of it.
They didn’t. They laughed at C&Ms shirts, which said “Too Hot To Handle” (or "2 Hot 2 Handle, I forget). You can interpret that any number of ways (including the way amarinth did), but it’s not fair to put words in their mouths. They could have simply been belittling C&Ms racing ability (which is becoming a bad idea lately).
