No, Evan breaking her tooth was the high point. It didn’t slow her down one bit, that gal is in it to win the damn race!
Not as spectacular as Claire ‘Melonface’ several seasons back, but I think I like Evan better, and I really liked Claire.
Pretty solid two hour episode overall. The head to head competitions might be better as the first leg after obvious bunching points, but they don’t really bother me too much.
I wonder how far behind the Violinists finished. The Amazing Editors made it look like it was close behind Team Big Brother (oh, the comeuppance!), but it seemed a bit darker when they got to the mat. They powered through that Astronomy lecture, those violinists. With Phil going on and on about how surprising things can happen, I thought maybe they’d be saved somehow.
I thought it might be a NEL, but then wondered what was the point of the double u-turn if you’re not going to eliminate a team?
I know they’ve been doing the u-turns this way for a while now, but I still don’t like it. I think you should have to finish one leg of the detour before you are allowed to u-turn another team.
Those were some great Detour tasks that highlighted Prague’s culture and history. Plus the return of the Kafka room! I’d completely forgotten that the first time around Phil had to wait overnight at the Pit Stop.
I was greatly amused when the nerds chose to stack beer kegs while the lifeguards initially chose to listen to the lectures. And then Big Brother wandered into an actual lecture.
Despite the editing, when the musicians showed up all alone at the Kafka room, I knew they were done for.
Next week, and I think for the rest of the season, we’ll be watching double episodes.
I liked the idea of the lectures, although somebody on the Amazing Race staff doesn’t really understand what Copernicus was all about. What was with a debate about the earth being flat or round? Copernicus didn’t argue in favor of a round earth. He didn’t have to; that was already generally accepted by his time. He argued in favor of the sun, not the earth, being the center of the Solar System.
I really thought, all things considered, that the musicians did well. I mean, sure they ended up last, but they managed to get everything done. I don’t know if it was spectacular editing or what, but I thought they rocked it. It looks like big brother now has a target on their back.
I like the head to head being a sudden death thing - but I’d also like it if it weren’t always physical (maybe some sort of puzzle?)
ITA. You shouldn’t know you’re going into a U-Turn before you do your first leg and you should have to have finished something before you U-Turn.
But I am glad that the Uturn was the first task so that it was theoretically possible to come back.
I must say this has been a good episode so far. I didn’t might having them switch partners since it was a non-elimination round. Kind of interesting how each team go different ways. Though the guy from Yale should have known to grab the top of the bar on the wench!
This singing challenge has been a good one too. Seems to have been a well balanced set of legs.
No one targeted Kristi and Jen for the U-turn, who are a really strong team. Big Brother started strong but seem to be starting to fade. Team Yale, despite the U-turn, still managed to finish in the middle of the pack.
Alex and Conor putting their tires into the wrong truck is a classic TAR flub, up there with Jessica and John (season 22) that wandered into some poor Balinese guy’s backyard and crafting something random there.
I agree, the tasks in both episodes were excellent – not just fun to watch, and with ample opportunities for shaking up the contestant rankings, but they really conveyed the flavor of the country.
I was a bit sad to see the firefighters go – they seemed like really nice guys – but they were clearly not on the same level as the better teams.
In the preview: do you think we’re getting a repeat of that “my ox is broken” task??? Though I doubt comedic lightning will strike twice.
There was a yellow stripe down the side of the truck so I can see how they might have gotten confused. But when the guy didn’t give them anything at least they knew they had screwed up.
Can you imagine what must go through the natives’ mind, “Do you want some tires?” Well of course they want some tires, they can sell em.
I agree about the firefighters. As my daughter said, they weren’t going to win, but good guys and we would’ve liked to have seen them stay awhile longer. I’m surprised, as someone else mentioned that the olympians weren’t targeted in a u-turn. I thought the dynamics of the teams when they switched partners was really good, although it might’ve been interesting to see some conflict or power struggles.
I was disappointed that both tasks in the wildlife refuge where guided, although I can see that sending some noobs out into the bush on horseback unescorted would be problematic. I can’t believe how whiny the combined team of the skier and the Big Brother girl where when Evan chose not to “work with them” when she blow the task out of the water in the first go. It’s a race.
And I thought they spent a little too much air time on the singing. By the end, I just wanted to see them wrap it up.
And, not to sound like the Big Brother chick, can I complain again about how bad the Closed Captioning is on the race? I know it’s not scripted, but they have plenty of time to edit the auto-captioning.
Yeah, I don’t get it. Working together makes sense early on when you are both struggling. When there are six teams left and you can complete a task on your own, what’s the point in helping out?
Right, and it’s not like Evan had worked with either of them in the past - she and one of the firefighters did the Kafka task. So they can’t even claim she “owed” it to them to work together.
