The Amazing Race 30

Best season of the Race in years and a fitting conclusion with that epic final task. Was surprised Big Brother won since it was Jess instead of Cody. I was pulling for the skiers but really any of the final four would have been worthy winners, which is unheard of on Amazing Race. Hope the Amazing producers can continue in this vein for future seasons.

That party district in HK would’ve killed me, I think. Even with the crowd helping. That fez sign looked so small, but at least it was yellow and red (I think), as was the bull. The arch from Washington Square was green and white. That would be very hard to get.

I like that both X-games and Indy were told about the Washington Square sign and didn’t get it.

On Reddit, Jen (from Kristi and Jen) said that the symbols were very ambiguous. For example, the symbol for Prague was a magnifying glass, but only the person who was in the room with the Kafka task would have seen that the examiner was using a big magnifying glass as a prop.

Evan did the Kafka task, but Henry had to find the symbol for the plane task.

It doesn’t sound very well designed.

I was rooting for Yale but BB worked hard for it, so props to them. Fun season - lots of great teams!

Yeah, good to see that Amazing Race production team can still deliver a great season. It seems it was questionable a few seasons back. And casting did a great job, none of the teams were particularly unlikeable, even Big Brother came off a hell of a lot better than they did on the other show.

Not exactly sure of the purpose of the light suit when they were descending inside of the bridge stanchion, but I’m greatly disappointed that no one flapped their arms like a chicken all the way down.

Snipped:

DISAGREE. I thought Cody was a gross racist (“I’m not a world traveler”) and Jessica a whiny baggage.

Well, I had something else written out, but it seems I was wrong about how it was designed. I thought that there were only 12 symbols total, not a lot of different ones. I know that one of the props, Team Extreme I believe, had the same symbol on it. At least it looked exactly the same.

Since that’s the case, yes, it was a badly designed task. If that’s how they wanted it done then they should have made the symbols easier to understand.

I used to be a baseball nerd, and I knew that Mays had hit 660 Homeruns.

I didn’t like the last two legs were done at night.

That is bad design. The picture should have been recognizable to both players, not the one player who did the Roadblock. Or at least use a more recognizable symbol from the Kafka task, like a telephone.

Well, I’m clearly in the minority here. With a few exceptions the tasks were quite good (head-to head, and the final task wasn’t nearly as physical as Phil played it up to be. On a huge ship with seven floors not a single team even broke a sweat.) But the big problem was that the contestants were BORING. The NASCAR guys were dishrags and the Yalies were just like any Yalie I’ve ever met - Dull as hell with a sense of entitlement. Just like my brother-in-law.

The boarders were nice and pleasant but just crushed inferior competition and wilted under real pressure at the end. The woman of Big Brother was the only really interesting contestant in the race. You perked up when she was on because you didn’t know what she’d do but you knew it’d be different. I liked that while she whined a lot it didn’t stop her from getting in there and working, unlike others. The real whiny bitch on the show was the NASCAR guy. He was embarrassing. Good task design but with some major failures, but that cast sucked. Just because they had cool jobs didn’t make them good contestants. One sparkplug and seven milquetoast in the final. The really sad thing is that the seven milquetoast were more interesting than those that got eliminated ahead of them.

So, 50/50 for me at best.

Team BB was my least favorite of the final four, but they weren’t as awful as some recent winners. I felt bad that the other three teams were plotting against Yale, which is why I rooted for them, but I would have been okay with the X-gamers or the Racers too.

Hated having the Head-to-Heads determine eliminations; otherwise this was a pretty good (if low-drama) season.

Just finished watching last night on DVR and yeah, disappointed. Maybe it’s just because I was already biased against Team BB, but I thought Jessica’s fortune cookies looked positively awful. If I was the judge I think I would have thrown about 3/4 of them in the trash. If she would have had to spend another 10-15 minutes folding cookies, that could have changed the outcome of the race. And Henry getting the right combination, then changing it just before the check? :smack:

I was surprised that only one team bothered to find out how many home runs Willie Mays hit before they jumped in the kayaks. It appears they thought they could just grab random numbered balls and try to come up with the correct answer.

I wonder why the sign for NY (Washington Square) wasn’t red and yellow like the others? I’m sure that had a lot to do with throwing off the two teams that ignored it even after having it pointed out. And didn’t Conor at first think it was France, not NY? (Not that that’s a bad guess, but I don’t think they were ever anywhere near the Arc De Triomphe in Paris.)

Just as an aside, I would love to see a behind-the-scenes documentary about how a race is put together… scouting the locations, coming up with the tasks and puzzles and clues, that kind of stuff.

We also thought it seemed like he did most of the challenges but then we thought, that can’t be right because don’t they have to split them evenly? They weren’t our favorites to win, but he really deserved it.

They weren’t. Which is why Conor and … someone else, I forget … thought the sign was just a sign that had nothing to do with TAR.

Well, that and the colors.

Jen, from Team Extreme has done a blog post on the last episode and challenge. She also has a drawing of what all the symbols looked like on the plane parts. It looks like they used a couple of different symbols for each leg, but there are also some repeating symbols.
