Phil pulled a fast one. A couple weeks ago, I had gone through the trouble of deducing elimination vs non-elimination rounds based on what Phil said. I thought I had it down pat: Phil didn’t say anything about elimination tonight, so I predicted that tonight would be non-elimination. At least Mirna & Charla are finally gone.
Chip & Kim are just having a grand ole time. If anyone deserves to win, it should be them.
I’m beginning to sour on Colin & Christie. This seems to be one team headed for a meltdown. However, despite some apparent problems, they’re still racing well. At this point, I wouldn’t mind seeing them win.
The twin finally made a smart move tonight: They quietly snuck off and let Team Blue Lagoon handle the money problems.
Yeah, I was wondering if part of the challenge was expecting them to feel uncomfortable about eating that much with those people watching(I know I would feel like crap), but since nobody mentioned it(possibly editing) and Phil’s voice over didn’t mention it, I have this sinking feeling that the producers may not have thought of it.
Also I’m wondering if the Ovo-fixation is an accident or a theme, it’d be interesting if they make them eat 10 thoasand year old eggs in Thailand or something.
I can’t exactly explain the pattern(apparently what I said in the thread a couple weeks ago was incorrect, oops) but the non-elimination rounds are obvious because of something. If it’s non-elimination I know for sure, and if I don’t know for sure that it’s non-elimination, then I know it’s elimination, by the process of elimination (umm does that makes sence to anyone other than me?)
I had actually wondered if this was a non-elim round as well, until about halfway through the show when NBC aired an ad for today’s “Early Show” which stated that the latest eliminated team would be on the show today. Pretty much ruined the suspense.
I have to say, it would almost be worth the trouble I’d be in to call in sick or late just to see them on The Early Show.
I really thought Colin had thrown up during the Egg Chow and thought that would come back to bite him in the ass. I guess I really don’t like him and just wanted something to happen to them. Was I the only one wondering if the members of the team who had actually eaten the egg were going to spew all over the place while riding the zipline?
One ostrich egg is equal to 2 dozen chicken eggs? I remember thinking, “Oh, sure, that’s not so bad. It’s like eating a 3-egg omelet. Actually, Eight of them.” blech.
Glad to see Mirna go, but I will miss Charla. Did anyone else think it kinda cute when Phil got all choked up at the end? I don’t remember seeing him get all that chatty with anyone else whose been eliminated.
Yeah, they said it was the same as 2 dozen chicken eggs, but it didn’t look like that much. It looked like a lot, but not 24 eggs’ worth.
I couldn’t figure out why a couple of them were drinking sodas with the egg - the soda’s going to fill you up quickly and make you feel even sicker. It would for me. at least.
And what the heck did Colin do to his egg? It was white and mealy and rubbery-looking. I know he over-cooked it, but his was really gross. Everyone else’s looked like normal scrambled eggs, and they seemed like the taste was okay, but he was gagging like it was something outta Fear Factor.
Anyone here ever taste an ostrich egg? How do they compare to chicken eggs?
I think he did spew. Doubt he was alone, though. And for whatever it is worth, I have faith that not coming in first on this leg is going to wreck his master plan. Next week should be a treat if the previews are any indication. I’ll laugh while he has his meltdown. What a jerk.
Nope. Me too.
BiblioCat - I was thinking maybe they were drinking the sodas because they had hurled at least once already and figured that adding sugar could only improve the flavor of what came up. Gross, but true. Because reguritated eggs are worse than … well, eggs.
Gotta say I was a little disappointed with this episode. They spent, IMO, too much time on the the Colin versus Mirna antagonism clique-building. Uncomfortable and boring. Less Big Brother, more Amazing Race, please.
And I didn’t like the whole scene with Brandon’s bus driver and his lackeys. I mean, it was part of the race, and a real thing, and exciting, so it’s a legitimate part of the episode, but the whole extorting money process just left me with a sour taste in my mouth. Usually when I watch TAR, I think about how cool it would be to go to all these neat places, but here, all I’m thinking is how easily I could be in Brandon’s shoes in a place like that, getting ripped off because I’m a foreigner. A real turn-off. (Although, in thinking about this, I think Brandon got screwed by the Twinks. Didn’t one of the Twinks bust out a hundred bucks first? That was a big mistake, because it indicated that “people with camera crews” = “suckers”.)
Although, after that first part, I liked the rest of the episode. I’m surprised no one did the bees. I’d have done the bees in a New York minute, and I’m surprised that the usually savvy teams didn’t. It was nice that teams were so bunched up at the end of the episode, and kudos to Mirna for pushing through to the end, unlike a certain pair of brothers last week.
They were all gagging once they got about halfway through. I’m a pretty skinny guy without a big appetite and I can tell you that, no matter how much I like scrambled eggs, I’d be gagging after eating a dozen of them. It wouldn’t be a matter of taste, it’s a matter of having to eat too much.
As far as feeling guilty about eating that much in front of the townspeople, I don’t think they cared. The kids seemed to think it was hilarious, much in the same way that people here would view a pie-eating contest. While they probably don’t get too much food, they were likely just fascinated that people could eat so much at once. Not so much jealousy as amusement. At least that’s how I took it.
I must have missed something this episode. When they were on the busses to the town, it seemed as if Charla/Mirna and Bowling Moms’ bus passed the other bus on the side of the road when they were looking for fuel. But at the town, the Twins and Blue Lagoon were there first.
Did they explain how this happened?
Now that Mirna and Charla are gone, I don’t know if I can watch the show any more. I sort of like Chip ‘n’ Kim but it’s just not the same. Wah.
Especially after they all got off the bus and the Twins just walked off and left him there. Who was it with Chip and Kim that asked what they had paid, $5? I couldn’t believe that the Twins and Brandon and Nicole offered up $100 for a freaking bus ride. And Nicole just reinforced the Ugly American stereotype when she grabbed the $10 and threw it on the ground.
I hate bees, but I would have chosen that one after hearing the explanation of the chair-delivering chore. That one seemed destined for failure, but seemed to go surprisingly well, other than C & K’s one slight detour for chair pads. I was sure at least one team would end up walking all over the town, desperately searching for the right house. Did all the teams pay off their helpers? I saw Chip give the guy money, but didn’t see anyone else doing it. And only the Moms and Charla and Mirna used the cart correctly, pulling it with the bar in front of them, rather than pushing it.
Well, I’m glad to see Mirna go. Not so much Charla, because she was interesting, but I only allow myself so many annoyances in my television routine.
And after seeing the preview for next week, I think I have to join the “Colin’s a Nutjob” party, although I still think he and Christie have a good chance if he avoids incarceration.
And Moms … good on you! Up to third! I’m very happy to see that. These ladies have ovaries the size of … well … bowling balls, I guess. Here’s hoping they can hang in till the last three.
Brandon/Nicole and the Twins getting soaked for a bus ride … I’m not terribly surprised. I’m pretty sure the Twins offered the bribe for going fast first … but obviously they’re better at petty bribery than Brandon is. Emulsified, they showed the stopped bus passing the Moms and Mirna/Charla on the road once they got started again. Brandon commented on it when they passed.
And I thought I was a horrible person for hoping one of the egg-eaters would yarf on the zip line … but now I see others of my kind, and I don’t feel so bad.
Well, much as I hated Mirna (not Charla), I’m sorry in a way to see them go. Right now, there’s not a really obvious villain. Colin & Christie may be making a play for it though - that “block the doorway” stunt of Christie’s was pretty low, though Mirna’s “don’t sell tickets to them” and closing the blinds schtick was not that much better. (Of course, we knew that she’d have had no chance of persuading the airline to pass up six fares.)
Brandon got creamed by the bus drivers, and if next week’s promos are anything to go by, it may come back to bite him in the ass.
If there are more eating challenges along the way, Chip and Kim will win. The two legs that they won were the ones where the Roadblock involved eating, and both times Chip wiped the floor with the competition. I also really like them (well, Chip certainly). I liked that they took time after completing the Detour to just sit with the people and observe the village life. Don’t know how long they spent, and don’t care. It was just the image of them sitting and enjoying Africa that was appealing.
I don’t quite understand the hatred of the Twins. They’re not the brightest bulbs in the box, but apart from that taxi conflict with Chip, they haven’t done anything really underhanded. Even the Bowling Moms were guilty of more (the “change your money” line they sold to Jim & Marsha).
I espcecially thought that Mirna & Charla would have done the bees, since Charla couldn’t be much help pushing the cart (not that Nicole was any help either).
Of all the teams, Chip and Kim are the ones really holding it together. The twins are holding up alright too; but they are going to make a big mistake soon. The dating couples have really ratcheted up the sniping at each other, and I think that will hurt them in the last few legs.
Thank Og the Witches are gone! I was really nervous that this was a non-elimination round. Bad on Phil for stretching out the tension like he did. I think he knew Mirna and Charla were the “stars” of this race and nobody likes to lose their stars. . .and I think he actually admired Charla for her spunk, if not for her duplicity. While she was not as bitchy as her regular sized cousin, she did pull some fast ones (example: last night she said she was going to throw up if the bus didn’t leave immediately!).
Props to Chip and Kim. Poop on poor Colin who couldn’t pour or eat a gigantic egg to save his life. But didn’t Christie get her revenge for the caviar? And good for the Moms!
Did it look to anyone else like each egg eater had a big bucket next to them? Perhaps vomiting was allowed in this challenge.
Anyone want to guess who the Final Three teams will be? I’m guessing Chip and Kim, Colin and Christie (yecch!) and the Moms. And I think it will be a close finish between Chip and Kim and Colin and Christie. . . unless, of course, there is another eating challenge in which case Chip and Kim are a shoo-in. Go Chipster, the Michael Jordan of Gobbling!
The Bowling Moms encouraged Jim and Marsha to waste time at the airport in Buenos Aires to change their American currency for local currency. It was an unnecessary delay.
The editors/producers deserve much praise for choosing not to show scenes of actual vomiting, unlike some other reality shows I could name. As an emetophobe, mere gagging is enough to make me turn my head.
I chuckled with glee when Colin couldn’t eat his egg (all the while conscious of the social issues wrapped up in the waste of food, etc., but it was so amusing to see him done in by an ostrich egg). I’m also surprised no one went for the bees. You’re in a bee suit, for crying out loud. Poor neglected bees.
I felt uncomfortable during all of the bus drama with Brandon and Nicole and the Twins. I know stuff like that–bilking the tourists–happens all the time, and not just in Africa but the world over, and I’ve had that same helpless feeling you could see all over their faces where you know you’re getting screwed and there’s next to nothing you can do about it. I also felt the bus guy got pretty aggressive about the money, and at that point I could understand Nicole’s reaction to him of throwing the money on the ground in frustration. It was just a shitty, unfortunate situation that compounded an already stressful leg of the race.
If I’m trying to go from point A in Africa to point B in Africa, I don’t think Swiss Air would be my first choice… :smack: Way to lead your team, Colin.
I’m sorry to see Charla & Mirna go. Mirna was so entertaining…we’ll never hear her mangled attempts at communicating with the locals again. They finally had a roadblock where Mirna could carry her weight without “dying” (“my heart’s going to stop…” from pulling her cart  ), but she dumps it on Charla again. What an unbelievable waste of oxygen.
