That should be “Luci”. And TYM I am going to be embarrased for a long time for missing that one. Thanks for not being to harsh.
Are any of the quotes inaccurate? If not, then why is the link unworthy? I thought this was a fine OP- if accurate, these quotes show just how demented many on the right are. Bush “appointed by God?” Puh-leeze. Get that guy a drug test.
and then only if it is wrapped up in a 500 word warble full of allegory and metaphor.
Not a prob, Bob. Might want to check the calibration on your irony detection equipment, however.
No way of knowing from the site linked. And I ain’t gonna try to find out. That’s the job of the member making the post; to ensure that what he’s posted is accurate. Rashak has failed to do so.
How 'bout I a thread containing nothing but a link to a page of quotes (without sources) from the anti-gun crowd, say “These people are shitting on the Bill of Rights,” and don’t return. That be okay with all y’all? Or would you jump down my throat for posting like december? My money’s on the latter.
Just trying one, the General Boykin quote, I found many cites for his quote. It might take a while to find a cite that we could all agree was impartial, but in my opinion the preponderance of evidence is that the quote is accurate. Sure, it would have been better if the link had links to impartial cites, but it doesn’t take much effort. Here is a pretty reliable source for the Coulter quote.
Hey Unc, I posted a reliable link to the source of at least one of the quotes. Want to talk about it or just slam Rashak?
No cite, but I thought that we had a thread on the senior Bush quote and found that it was unsubstaniated.
Are there some Americans in and out of government who want to influence policy in the name of their brand of Christianity? Yes. Has this been the case at times in the past? Yes. Does the Republic survive? Yup.
Are we run by a murderous theocracy that destroys ancient works of culture as the Taliban comparison suggests? Nope.
Dumb OP.
Unc (whom I would propose for recognition as SDMB Curmudgeon…)
So long as you eschew expressing your opinions in ghastly limerick, and continue the cordial politesse that is your trademark, Freak freely, says I.
But the matter at hand…
I am not as alarmed as many others on this Board. Extreme religious “revivalism” is a recurrent theme in American history, rather like the head lice cycle. We’ve survived it before, we’ll survive it again. The God Goons appear monolithic, but, in truth, they are far from it.
First off, there is the distinction between Evangelicals and Fundamentalists. Personally, I am rather fond of Evangelicals, I think their cheerful “Good News!” approach far more representative of the message of The Boss than the dour repitition of “Tho Shalt NOT, repeat, NOT…” of the Fundys. So long as they can focus on topics central to all their concerns, the fault lines do not show.
But doctrinal nitpicking lies just below the surface, they are as vulnerable as lefties (so aptly lampooned by the Python’s Life of Brian.) They are in unshakeable soldarity on things like displaying the Ten Commandments and including invocations to God in public ceremonies. My dear old Methodist granny would be right there with them. But as soon as anyone mentions such Steven King theology as The Rapture, she will pull her justly famous pecan pie from the communal table and scoot.
Secondly, a significant portion of the Right are devout acolytes of the Mammonite Church and the cringing disciples of the Dollar Almighty. They are perfectly happy to exploit the God Goons to their purposes, so long as it does not interfere with the business of America, which is business. Mr. Dobson wants to ban Britney Spears perky little titties, Time-Warner wants to sell those titties.
Keep calm, keep your powder dry, and most importantly, don’t waste ammo on little battles. Once they obtain sufficient power and influence, you can bet your last shekel they will start to squabble over that power and influence.
No cite, but I thought we found it was substantiated.
Ok, so we should wait to start worrying untill they control both houses of congress, the Supreme Court and the presidency? Oh wait they already do. When are they going to start squabling over control?
As long as it’s black.
Hmmmmph. I’ve heard the second quote, Bailey Smith’s, attributed twenty years ago to Jesse Jackson.
And Joe McCarthy has been dead for decades, something which you’d think the site might bother to point out.
I’d take that site with enough grains of salt to supply every pretzel vendor in Central Park.
Wow, two wooshes with one post! I’m getting jealous…
No.
Slam Rashak - obviously. I say obviously, because as you can easily see in my original post to this thread I commented only on Rashak’s posting habits; not on the content of his post (with which in theory, I agree wholeheartedly).
A title I would gladly accept. I’m just tired unto death of the unsubstantiated bullshit and deliberately misleading shit posted to these boards by every asshole with a petty ideology to promote - boards supposedly dedicated to abating the overall ignorance of its participants. We’re getting farther and farther off the mission. And permitting posting habits like those practiced by Rashak without challenge can only serve to lead us further astray.
December would have been, and Reeder probably would be, roundly thumped for submitting a garbage OP like the one we have here (and here for that matter). Why should we let this kind of behavior perpetuate?
New Iskander:Oh, I got it. Here, I’ll give it a try. Jesus built my hotrod.
And not only that, but there’s this point which I wanted make in my previous post until I was rudely interrupted here at work:
A strict interpretation of the SDMB membership agreement would seem to proscribe such posts as Rashak Mani (and others) repeatedly contributes.
I’m assuming you’re referring to this threadwhere Scylla actually took extra investigative steps. There was no sure finding that it was “unsubstantiated”, perhaps even the opposite.
And Eyer, just ignore askeptic. He gets off on being a dick.
