The BBC uses an unfortunate phrase

From This BBC article:

I always knew there was something fishy about beauty contests…

This phrase has been used to juvenile - yet hilarious - effect by the comedian Chris Morris on Brass Eye, interviewing agony aunt Clare Rayner.

“If an attacker came running at you, would you beat him off?”

  • “Well yes.”
“If I tried to attack you, would you beat me off?”
  • “Of course.”

Etc.

What I want to know is, where do I sign up to help decide the winner for the next beauty pageant?

Made me think of a joke that a surprising number of people fell for:

If Jack was stuck on a horse and couldn’t get off, would you help Jack off the horse?

After Miss Peru beat off 106 contestants to take the crown, Miss Dominican Republic came second. No wonder the pageant didn’t make network TV in the USA…

Why you say that? Coz Ms USA only came third?
