Or for a more classic and timeless example, how about our standard image of jolly, fat, white-bearded, red-and-white-clad Santa Claus, the product of Coca-Cola ads?
Did you chaps in the US get the jeans advert set in a launderette?
With the haunting sound of ‘Heard it on the grapevine’ in the background, a male model called Nick Kamen strolls in, takes off his jeans and washes them. Giggling girls and an old bloke watch in admiration / amazement.
(There was a fine spoof followup, with a similar advert, but the catchphrase ‘bet he drinks Carling Black Label!’.)
This goes back a ways, and I’m not even sure if he counts as a “character,” but I loved the Jamaican “Uncola Nut Man” from 7-Up commercials in the '60s. (“These are cola nuts…these [holding up a lemon and a lime] are un-cola nuts. Rather laaarger than cola nuts. Rather juicier.”)
