The best ice cream in the world

hitechburrito had it correctly – Moosetracks is stunningly good but equally hard to find.

Michiganders: I know that Stroh’s sold off the ice cream line about 10 years ago – what label does it carry now? I used to win a lot of bets against people who claimed there was no Stroh’s ice cream . . .

Licorice. The stuff they sell now is usually competent, but the licorice ice cream when I was a kid… WOW! I think they had to stop using several of the ingredients because of bad results on lab rat tests.

Other than licorice, I’m big into tart sherbets like daquiri or raspberry.

They carry Moosetracks at the local grocery – I’ll have to give it a try.

un, that would be Tillamook, OREGON, thankyouverymuch. Washington has plenty of good stuff on its own without taking one of Oregon’s cultural touchstones. By the way, touring the cheese factory is a popular tourist activity if you’re visiting the northern Oregon coast. Hey, we stopped there on our honeymoon. Is that some indication of how good it is? The tasting room has a complete selection of flavors, including those that are being tested for inclusion into the line. You walk in; you waddle out.

Is it really? Every grocery store in my area has it, and I swear it’s on sale ever other week. I’m in Flint, Michigan, and we’ve had all those flavors for several years now. They do indeed rock. My personal favorite is Caramel Caribou. But I’d swear that those nuts were cashews, not pecans. Oh well. It’s kinda hard for one to actually taste the ice cream when one is inhaling it at the speed of light, trying to make sure one gets one’s fair share before one’s children insist that Mama really should share.

Before I forget, Mooney252, I do remember Stroh’s Ice Cream as well. Goooooooooooood stuff. Yummy yummy yummy.

The tub I have states proudly that it is a ‘Product of Canada’.
So I had to re-read the label when I read here that it’s made in the US.
“Manufactured under license. Peanut Butter Iditarod, Alaskan Classics, and Denali are trademarks of Denail Flavors, LLC, Hillsdale, MI”
Prepared for Sobeys, Stellarton/Toronto"

Ok. So MY tub was made in Canada. I thought it odd that something called Denali Classics was Canadian made. There’s even a map of Denali National Park on the packaging.

In US my favorite is Chocolate Chip Mint.
And in Sweden it’s an ice-cream called Americana,
it’s chocolate with marsmallows and candied pecannuts in it,
and it’s yuammy.
Sometimes I take some orange ice-cream to it,
that’s a good combination.
I just love ice-cream.

Hillsdale, MI, eh Betty? So I guess that’s why I can find it pretty much everywhere here. Heh. I am just too lucky!

Back it up, Al. I’m two hours behind you, haven’t had my coffee yet, and have to contend with a visit from two out of town visitors today.

ahem

AND I’m bigger n’ meaner than you!

AND I’ve spent my time in Michigan. Good ice cream notwithstanding, I think I’ll stay here, mmkay?

Ginger

In high school I worked as an old fashioned soda jerk (stop sniggering!) in a shop that served gourmet ice cream. The best brand we served was Sedutto’s. Made in Coney Island, I think. They made a kick-ass Peanut Butter Crunch, and I’d like to compare it with the stuff mentioned earlier in the thread.

Apart from that, the best stuff I’ve ever had was the strawberry gelato I had from a street vendor in Florence, Italy.

Neener neener neener! I’ve had coffee and you haven’t!

But if I can figure a way to mail you some ice cream, I will surely try.

I truly love you, Al. Really. I love you, Man! But then I also love Ann Arbor.
I don’t want an envelope oozing out dairy products, kay? It’s likely to be CHEESE by the time it gets here.

[a little play by Ginger the bitter:]

“Mmmm, look at the new imported cheese, Buffy”

Oh! Skip, we can buy some of this for our soiree for our other impossibly rich friends who own vacation condos here, contribute nothing to the community, but suck up property and golf all day as though it’s their God-given right!"

“Oh Buffy, I love you.”

[Upper-class twit laughter]

OH MY GOSH, I’VE COMPLETELY HIJACKED MY OWN THREAD! AL, YOU’RE IN FOR IT!

You can thank me later.

Parhaps this can put you on the right…track.

Lsura, Texas Gold changed thier name a few months ago. I don’t remember the new name, but I think its something stupid.

I found it, its a Kroger brand. Called Private Selections now.

Betty, I lived in and around the Ann Arbor area for 16 years. I love it too. Got a couple of A2 Dopers here, in fact.

And what, pray tell, would be so wrong with Moose Track flavored cheese?

My favorite “helado” flavor is almond, and just the one distributed by a local parlor, called “Los Chinitos”(well, at least the rest of the people call the place that way). The place is located in Río Piedras, PR.(my hometown)

Since the term ‘track’ refers to ‘scat’ or plain old ‘shit’ from animals…at least in the north.

Oh what the hell, we’ll feed it to the part-time summer people. Send that to Buffy Nosintheair, 11 Snooty Crescent.

Back to Ice Cream… my son had some just a few minutes ago. I think I may abandon coffee for more Peanut Butter Iditarod.

[sub]That makes me a BAD Doper. Forsaking coffee! For shame![/sub]

Ginger

Before Ben and Jerry’s, there was Hillary’s. For those of us living in Philly in the 1970’s, it was the real deal. Hand made and packed. Oooooye gevalt, their mint chocolate chip was it’s own religion.

They got greedy. They expanded. They folded. <Sob>.

Cartooniverse

You know what I forgot to mention? Rolo ice cream pops.
Man, these things could take the place of sex in my life, and I would live very happily ever after.

They’re chocolate ice cream, with soft luscious caramel in the middle. Then the outside is coated with chocolate. You have to bite off the top, suck out the caramel, eat the chocolate from the outside and then the ice cream. Mmmmmm.
