Ben & Jerry’s Holi Cannoli. i can only find it at this one Wa-Wa store about a half an hour from my home, but I always go…I LOVE that stuff.
(bump)
I am totally willing to change my humble opinion about who makes the best ice cream if any of you care to send me samples that can compete. No problemo!

Licorice, the REAL kind that turns your tongue black, not the evil imposter that turns the tongue green. They used to make the good stuff at a place called Hillview Dairy in my hometown, and it has been years since I’ve run into the real deal.
IMHO, this country started to go downhill fast when you could not longer get a good scoop of licorice ice cream.

If I found peas and carrots in my ice cream, they, along with the rest of the contents of my stomach, would have been “recycled” pretty quickly. Heck, I’d probably projectile the stuff.
Aenea–this damned thread made me go to the local Rite-Aid (the store formerly known as Thrifty’s) and get me a triple scoop of Chocolate Malted Crunch, at $1.89.
Probably a mistake, as I’m sure I’ll be an addict again. Damn this board and this thread, anyway!
Ben & Jerry’s Chubby Hubby. Pretzels, chocolate, peanut butter, vanilla ice cream. Orgasmic.
Graeter’s Mint Chocolate Chip. Deee-lish. See, there are SOME advantages to living in Cincinnati!
And, of course, nothing beats a scoop or five of some great vanilla ice cream (Breyer’s Vanilla) with Hershey’s syrup poured all over it. I just adore those little cans.
I think it was Ben and Jerry who made a “Peach Trifle” ice cream that lasted in the stores for about 7 minutes. It was great.
Peach Trifle notwithstanding, I generally don’t like B&J’s. There’s something slightly…wrong…with the texture. I much prefer H-D (I agree with whoever said Dulce De Leche was great (and it makes me think of Guys and Dolls too!))
I think the best overall brand of comercially available ice cream, though, in terms of texture, intensity of flavor and so on is Bryer’s Dreamery brand. They’ve got a similar flavor to Dulce De Leche (Creme De Caramel?) that’s really good.

In Texas:
Blue Bell Pecan Pralines 'n Cream
Blue Bell Banana Pudding
Blue Bell Pecan Caramel Fudge Cheesecake
In Pittsburgh:
Bruster’s Turtle
Bruster’s Caramel Apple
Bruster’s Banana Chocolate Chip
Mmmmm. Ice cream.
My personal fave is Blue Bell Banana Split, but I don’t live down South anymore.
My current New Favorite is Edy’s Dreamery Mad About Malt. For my money, I can’t get enough malt flavor, and this ice cream actually TASTES like malt, not like chocolate.
Veb, you got good taste in ice cream!

I’m with you, Lisa. Maybe not the best ice cream in the world, but definitely the best I can buy at the grocery store.
Chocolate covered, peanut-butter filled pretzels in peanut butter ice cream with chocolate swirls.
[chandler]Oh. My. God.[/chandler]
I had to add on to my last post…
Whenever I’m in Texas, I usually gorge myself on Blue Bell ice cream. I once had a peach flavored one, with big chunks of peaches in it–it was *to die for *. They also had a cherry vanilla that was pretty killer, too.
I broke the paddle on my ice cream maker (long, stupid story on that one), so as I’m waiting for the replacement, I’m trying some new stuff. The Dreamery stuff seems not so bad. I think I need to do more taste-testing…
Oh, the late lamented B&J Holy Cannoli and Peach
Melba! And Haagen Daas Cinnamon, another flavor
on the market for about two seconds.
Now that summer’s coming, I hope to see B&J Lemon
Sorbet Swirl back on the market.
…and I know on one really gives a rat’s ass.
Muddy Sneakers - “Chocolate and Caramel covered Peanuts with Chocolate flakes in White Chocolate Ice Cream with a thick ribbon of Caramel.”
The best ice cream I’ve ever had was the chocolate ice cream in Florence, Italy. Holy cow, was it good!
The best ice cream I can pick up at the grocery is Ben and Jerry’s Chunky Monkey.
The worst? Green tea ice cream. Yuk!

Back in Dayton, or more accurately outside of Dayton, was Young’s Dairy. They used to make ice cream to die for. I think they’ve gone to commercial in the last few years since I’ve gone there last though.**
O Ho! A fellow Ohioan! Yes, Young’s Dairy located in the PRYS (People’s Republic of Yellow Springs). I wasn’t that big of their stuff, but our area does have two of the best:
United Dairy Farmers’ Homemade Natural Vanilla Bean (it crunches!!!)
Graeter’s Black Raspberry Chip (well, OK anything from Graeter’s. People Magazine once rated Graeter’s as the best in the country)
As for the mass market stuff, I agree about Dreamery (around here, it’s called Edy’s, not Dryers). My favorite is Cashew Praline.
Ben & Jerry’s is pretty good, too, but they can overdo the ingredients (too damn many chunks). And some of the richer flavors have a tendency to taste like Crisco, they’re so fatty.
Since most of the extra 60 lbs on me is due to ice cream, I think I am qualified to add my $.02.
Breyer’s vanilla and mint chocolate chip (no green dye!)
Ben and Jerry’s Chocolate Fudge Brownie (esp. the frozen yogurt), Wavy Gravy, and Rainforest Crunch, which I think has become Dilbert Totally Nuts.
Finally, there is a great ice cream shop in Carlisle, PA, but I can’t remember the name of it. Super rich, and they experimented with interesting flavors. However, I would not recommend their Grape Nut ice cream.
That particular mint and chip is definately on my ‘approved’ list too.
Wow, take me back…
…to when I was 13. There was a truly awesome dairy in–Shirley?–Groton?–Acton?–Massachusetts. I can’t remember the name of it, but you’d go there with your parents, or your date, or your friends, then go to the edge of the lighted area, just outside, really, and sit and eat your ice cream, swat the few mosquitoes that wanted to make a meal of you, talk about your dreams and look at the stars, and hope that mankind someday made it up there, OUT there…
And, oh yeah, ANY kind of ice cream from there would do.
