The best movie that no one saw

John Boorman’s The Emerald Forest was powerful, magnificent, wrenching, meaningful. Never found anyone else who’s seen it. Want to see it again.

Zebra, I went out and rented Gattaca entirely on the strength of seeing it invoked here on the SDMB so often.

Now everybody go and demand your local video store to stock The Emerald Forest! 'Cause I can’t find it any more anywhere!

It’s not a film that is easy to absorb the first time. I heartily recommend a repeat viewing.

I’ll amen that any day.

I can come with with a lot:

Deathwatch (very good science fiction film)
Black Moon (the strange little Louis Malle film)

I’d also agree with The Conversation , but disagree strenuously with Gattaca, which was just too stupid a movie to be considered good.

“Still Breathing”

Brendan Fraser, Joanna Goings.

A Texas street performer has dreams of his future wife, an LA con artist.

It’s just a sweet romantic comedy. Kinda dumb, but with some good scenes (and some sexy scenes).

It’s on the Independent Film Channel Sunday morning.

And two others:

  1. Nice Girls Don’t Explode
  2. Frankenhooker.

In the words of Dexter Gordon “Mgmhkhls bluqhhhs sgrllmb pikygt”. I think I needed subtitles for the English speaker, not the French ones.

They Might Be Giants.

Honestly, the best movie I’ve seen in a good long while.

The end has stuck with me ever since I was sixteen.

Cyn

Minor nitpick. Although Von Trier was the author of the Dogme 95 manifesto, the actual director of The Celebration was Thomas Vinterberg.

One of my favourites is John Amiel’s Queen of Hearts. It’s a romantic fable about an Italian immigrant family living in London that also contains elements of mysticism, melodrama, and a caper thrown in for good measure. I’d love to see a DVD release of this.

BTW, I loved The Conversation , Zero Effect and GATTACA

Strickly Ballroom - It’s a quirky little Australian film about teen ballroom dancing. I’m not especially fond of ballroom dancing and did not expect to enjoy it, but I was in Nepal and the guest of an Australian friend, so…

I loved it. It is a delightful film.

Y Tu Mama Tambien. Just saw it, not sure how widely it has been released. Funny, sad, touching. A very good movie.

hey, lady kneadtoknow, i think round midnight is a great, great movie. im a big jazz fan, and a big dexter gordon fan, and that movie is beautiful.

It really was a cute movie. I recomend it to anyone who wants a lite comic romance. “Pasa Doble? Show me this Pasa Doble…”

Anyway, I have an addition, Kicking and Screaming It had many of the same actors that were in Barcelona, Last Days Of Disco and Metropolitan. I’m not sure if it’s the same director though. It was about a group of guys finally leaving college. Funny as hell, especially Eric Stoltz as the guy who never left college.

Sorry for the redundancy. Editing is a skill in which I am lacking.

Eric Stoltz reminds me of another one: Sleep With Me.

The movie itself is only so-so (typical Stoltz indie fare), but there are a couple of scenes with Parker Posey & Joey Lauren Adams that had me rolling.

Ironiya sudby

Irony of Fate (1975)

Saw this first in Russian class, then with a former Russian associate of mine.

Here’s the imdb listing:

Still trying to come up with a good English language film…

My favorite would have to be The Red Violin. The only people that I know personally that have seen it are the ones that I’ve pointed in that direction. (Except maybe Maeglin. I think he and I got into a discussion about it last year.) The movie is subtitled through parts, excellently shot, the storyline is engaging, and I highly recommend it to anyone that is looking for a good drama for the night.

Another one, which I haven’t seen in years (and I’ve not come across many who have seen it) is Jesus of Montreal. It’s about an acting troupe that puts on a passion play, angering the Catholics to a horrific end. I saw it back in college during my Modern Drama class and fell in love with it. I just have a hard time finding it any time I step foot in a video store.

One of my favorite movies, “Mr. Love”, I caught it one time years ago on Cinemax and couldn’t find it anywhere for a long time. Recently rerun on Encore, just before my cable company dropped that channel from it’s ‘non digital’ line up to add Oxygen and WE.
<heavy sigh>

Wow, I must be an obscure movie fan, I’ve seen at least half of the movies mentioned (Strictly Ballroom, The Conversation, Bad Boys, Gattaca, Emerald Forest, etc.)

Max Torque - Sorcerer is one of my boyfriend’s favorite movie. He got a DVD player for his birthday last year along with his first DVD, Sorcerer.

I would like to add a few of my own obscure favorite movies:

Grace of My Heart - http://movieweb.com/movie/graceheart/

Killing Time - Italian hitwoman, yum! http://www.fortunecity.com/lavendar/eastwood/311/june2001/killingtime.jpg

Cube - Great psychological flick

What aboot Mans Favourite Sport

ooh, ooh, i got another! ‘mad love’ with peter lorre. a real early talkie; i saw it at the late lamented science fiction film festival, in cambridge, circa 1982 or so.

really fun, over the top, lurid; mr lorre plays a freaky dude who falls in love with an opera singer, steals her graven image from the front of the theater, takes it home and plays the pipe organ to it while laughing maniacally. hilarity ensues.

im pretty sure ukelele ike referenced it in a thread a couple days ago; otherwise, i havent heard its name in the 20 years since ive seen it.
