The (British) Open

Fun leaderboard, with several big- and no-names at the top, and several big-names looking at a weekend off.
Right now Adam Scott leads at -1, with Greg Norman and Rocco Mediate at +1. Fun seeing Anthony Kim up near the lead in his first shot at links golf.
But how in the world does David Duval shoot +3 on a day and course where Lefty, Veej, and the Big Easy hack their way around the course to the tune of 9-10 over?

Nice to see Norman in with a 70, not too bad considering the large numbers below him. It’d be pretty cool to see him right there on Sunday.

Way to go Rocco!

Meanwhile, what’s with 2 S. Africans named Pappas running 1st and 2d in Milwaukee?
Anyone want to bet against Kenny Perry?

Duval and Norman - this is surreal and pretty cool to watch, eh?

Way to go, Rocco! Sounds like miserable weather, especially early. I’m off the next three days and can OD on this. Beauty.

Cool if Duval wins.

I love shark infested waters. 's been waaay too long. Giv’er Greg!

Wait…Duval is doing well?! How did I miss that on the leaderboard?

::runs and looks::

Hmmm…I"m not sure +3 is enough to get my hopes up, but it is nice to see him almost in the top 10 after yesterday. I’ve been pulling for him to get back to form because I’d like to believe that not all people who fade from excellence are doomed to stay that way, and I appreciate his level-headed approach to post-stardom life.

ETA: It would be awesome if Duval somehow pulled it out and got himself another multi-year major championship exemption, since his last British victory is the only thing that has maintained his access to tournaments in the last few years.

How can you not love a leaderboard topped by Norman and Villegas, in the house at E and +1. Villegas shoots a 65 on a day when red numbers are mighty scarce.

And how can you not love a leaderboard that reads:
Norman
Villegas
Goosen
Weir
Mediate
Mcdowell
Furyk
Allenby
Poulter
within 2 strokes of each other.

It’s gonna be a fun weekend!

I can’t get over the fact that no more folk around here are interested in an Open played in a howling gale, with a leaderboard reading:
Choi
Norman
Villegas
Duval
Mediate

Guess there are a lot of fair-weather Tiger cubs checking out for the duration…

When I was a teenager, Greg Norman was my hero. It’s been a long time since he’s been at or near the top of a leaderboard in a major. Even if it doesn’t last, it’s still really exciting to see.

Hello All - I have been digging the Open Championship. I am very happy that TNT has been simulcasting the rounds…not sure why I bothered to go into work. As people cant see my monitor they think I am concentrating on an important document.

I think Rocco coming on strong in another major is awesome. I am also pulling for Jim Furyk - I’d like to see him make a come back. But the best of all are two “washed up has-beens” Norman and Duval teaching all the bombers how to play golf.

My only disappointment was that Tom Watson couldn’t hold on and make the cut.

Broadcast starts in 7 hours … I should get to bed.

I recorded last nights’ coverage, and plan to watch it this evening, then maybe stay up and go straight into the next round. My man Weir is doing well, and it’s about time he picked up another major!

I like Weir also - I have tried to copy his take away move where he looks back to see if his club is on the plane. When I do it right I hit the ball well … When I dont I dont…

David Duval is imploding. 9 over already today. Too bad, I really wanted to see him stay in there.
Never thought I’d be seeing Norman at the end!

  1. Why would that make them “fair-weather” Tiger cubs? Tiger isn’t playing. :dubious:

  2. Some of us just haven’t had access to their computers so far this week. Now that we do, I’m pulling for Greg Norman. What an awesome result that would be! But I see that the course is really taking no prisoners today, so we will just have to wait and see; if the wrist holds up, we may be looking at the first back-to-back champion since, oh yeah, since the last two won by Tiger Woods. :stuck_out_tongue:

I was sure Duval and Norman would fold today - it’s really the first time all week they have been in the worst of the weather. 50% ain’t bad.

Is it just me, or are there an incredible ammount of commercials during this coverage?

I think Norman and Choi fall below Wakefield who is in the house at +5.

Sad about Duval but whenever I hear hm talk I dislike him…I think he deludes himself about his current talent level.

Ben Curtis has a legitimate shot at a repeat??? Two majors - would that make him a hall of famer (for golf not NFL merchandise)?

It has been interesting…

I just had a thought, watching what is going on. I think if Greg Norman holds on to win, it would totally change perception of him and his results in major championships. Not so much in the sense of broadening his results (he still would only have won The Open), but in the sense of removing from memory the identification with his famous folding acts.
