“Malhaur National Wildlife Refuge” ? Excellent speler. And not, apparently, a people of Harney county.
I believe it is.
Let’s go to the quarry and throw stuff down there! It’s even available to download! The fool just put his mailing address up for the world to see and then directed people to “Share share share…”!!! I hope he gets LOTS of unsolicited mail!
So it was Tom on the snowy knoll?
If he didn’t live out in the middle of nowhere, he would probably make better money since he’s cutting out the middleman to sell direct. The feedlot/slaughterhouse/meatpacking industries are olipsonies, where small producers have few (if any) options to shop around for a better selling price, and thus not going to make any money that way unless they can compete on economy of scale.
IIRC, ranching is not Cliven’s sole source of income, and may not even by his primary source of income. I think he has some sort of equipment rental sideline business, although I may be misremembering that as one of his sons’ businesses. (and I’m sure his kids are kicking in to help pay the bills, too.
Ammon Bundy is a car fleet manager. That’s why he always wears a cowboy hat.
ISTR something about a melon farm.
Every good-sized farmer’s market I’ve been to here in upstate NY has at least one booth selling meat (although very few sell meat and only meat) Not always beef, but it’s certainly there. Since I doubt all these sellers are renegade scofflaw slaughterhouse operators selling dicey meat under the table, there must be some way to legally sell your own animal products to the public.
(Checked my freezer and found some farmer’s market purchased meat in the form of beef ring bologna. It was cryovacked, labeled with both the farm and the processing plant, and USDA approved.)
I said “under inspection by the USDA” and you said “USDA approved”. Both suggest to me an intimacy with Federal regulators that doesn’t square with my understanding of Cliven’s relationship with any level of Federal bureaucracy.
Well, hopefully this is enough to implicate and charge him in this plot seeing as the Feds seem to be unable to arrest him for welfare fraud at the ranch.
(And I doubt this will hurt his kids chances of being let out of jail anytime soon.)

The Idaho 3%ers are the ones stoking the fires in Burns, at the moment.
Like I said, it ain’t over.
Robert “LaVoy” Finicum died almost a week ago and I can’t think of anyone who is happy about that. But for those who wish to know the man better he did write a novel, Only by Blood and Suffering: Regaining Lost Freedom. I will not post a link to it but will link to a suitably thoughtful and appropriately sentemental review of the book over at Wonkette.
One of yesterday’s developments for the final four out at the refuge was that they woke to find their smartphones more or less deactivated. From a law enforcement standpoint it’s a no brainer move but it did stop David fry from posting live streams on his YouTube page which sadly does deprive us of some very dark comedy. Fortunately the existing videos are still there for our twisted enjoyment and general befuddlement.
However it seems one of the occupiers has an older, perhaps flip phone and it has not yet been shut off so tonight they were able to do a three+ hour interview with some of their fellow nutjobs. I wont link to their Youtube page because I don’t want to increase their hits but I did find where someone posted the (almost) full call in mp3 format for anyone interested in some truly strange and pathetic babbling. The kicker, David Fry, social misfit, mental midget and all around nebbish is becoming a rock star in the patriotardosphere.
The “Here come the judge” guy was Dewey “Pigmeat” Markham, an old vaudevillian.
I think the 3% announced that they plan to leave town today. No one knows why but it may be so they can attend Finicums funeral on Friday. It may also be that they need to go back to work.
“Finicum’s Wake” ? That is just …
Bob Finicum lived in on freedom’s street.
A gentle patriot, mighty bold.
He’d a beautiful soul so rich and sweet.
To rise in the world, he carried a Colt.
I grew up with some of the Mormon conspiratorial Libertarianism which marks Utah. Not all Mormons believe that, but Glen Beck is not alone. The father of my best friend in early elementary school was that kind of guy. He was from one of these cow towns and bought a place as far away from the government as you can get.
While looking into the various aspects of the Bundy’s views of Mormonism, I found the LDS Freedom Forum, where you can find gems such as the following.
My notes:
-
The Book of Mormon is very big on “secret combinations” which infiltrate the government and look to overthrow individual liberty. The BoM was written during the anti-Masonic period of the late 1820s and reflected that.
-
The Gadianton Robbers were one of the secret combinations in the BoM. Modern day ones have infiltrated the US government and are looking to destroy the country.
-
Ezra Taft Benson, 13th president of the LDS Church, was a right wing wacko and a huge fan of Cleon Skousen, who Glenn Beck loves to quote. My father had bookshelves of their books.
-
This fear of a modern king seems to be new, or at least I didn’t hear about it growing up. However, members of the Bundy gang also made reference to it. Ironically, Joseph Smith had himself crowned King of the World, as did Brigham Young and Young’s successor.
-
Good o’ fear of the UN.
-
Mormonism is about an apocalyptic view of the world and the imminent second coming. Expect all sorts of nasty stuff to happen.
-
The 2,000 stripling warriors were extremely valiant and loyal warriors; in the text, all are wounded in battle and yet survive. They are portrayed in art in soft homoerotic images.
-
- According to Joseph Smith, the divinely inspired US constitution will “hang by a thread” but Mormons will save it.
-
Mormonism has to take over the world, and just before the Millennium will be a great time.
The author of this is on the fringe, in that he/she is actually putting together a scenario, yet even very mainstream Mormons such as my mother believe that something like this will happen.
The only difference between the nuts and the normal in Mormonism is the specifics. I grew up being taught that the world, including the government; is getting corrupt; that there will be secret combinations that the nation was going to be in terrible danger; and that the Mormons would save it.
Bundy doesn’t say any more than what I grew up hearing around me.
Elder Jensen and Elder Christiansen will fuck you up.
Mormonism is even weirder than I thought!
Not to mention “We the People of the citizens of the United States.”
