I had to look up the temps. in Toronto and Montreal to see these wildly cold temperatures you’ve guys got going on - aw, that isn’t that cold! That’s about the temperature where I finally decide to put a jacket on.
It’s bearable. We get cold snaps like this a few times each winter. I haven’t seen anyone complaining on here. Sunspace mentioned it was cold, but OK. (Well, maybe a little painful with the windchill.)
In fairness, though, Toronto and Montreal tend to be a lot more humid than we in the west are. A cold, humid day seems colder than it actually is, and can be quite uncomfortable.
I’d rather have it cold than get freezing rain or heavy snow. Cold doesn’t stop you from driving somewhere. Ice will fricking kill you.
I’m finding that I’ve lost my acclimatization to the cold. I know intellectually that nothing I’m feeling right now is as cold as what I used to ski, skate, toboggan, snowshoe in when I lived in Brandon or Edmonton, but this December/January in Toronto has made me feel colder than I’ve felt in a long time.
And yes, RickJay, I heartily agree - ice storms and freezing rain are the absolute worst.
This is getting absurd. First the ice storm, now this. Got woken up by a loud bang outside, wondering WTF?
Ice quakes? Never heard of 'em before.
The weather in Toronto this past year must be a Biblical judgment on the city for electing Rob Ford.
First a flood, then an ice storm, and now … ice quakes?
I don’t mind the cold at all. ~ -30 here this morning, and the car (in garage) started no problem.
I work in an unheated, uninsulated warehouse, so I am not out in the elements all day, but I am in the temperature. I’ve become pretty good at estimating temperature over the past 20-odd years, but my accuracy is far higher when dealing with cold temperatures, for some reason.
I like the rush of heat to the cheeks when you finally get a chance to go inside where it’s warm. Coffee and a cigarette on a beautiful snappy morning is also a real winter pleasure.
I think it’s going to be a great year.
News outlets are lovin’ themselves some Twitter, nowadays, aren’t they? I can barely read an online news story without it containing several Twitter hits of reaction to the item.
Free and instant eyewitness accounts, without even having to ask them to lean in to the microphone!
Wait until you get the plague of [del]locusts[/del]mosquitos next summer!
Heh, and don’t forget that with the majority of the population owning a cellphone with a camera on it, you can often get instant photos to go along with those accounts.
You mean, like normal?
Rob Ford going to run again and calls himself bestest mayor evar?
We had that already, several years ago.
I remember golfing at the local course here, north of Barrie, and being beset by swarms of orange ladybugs. They were biting us. Apparently Toronto imported them in order to combat an aphid problem, and they multiplied like crazy.
Aw, c’mon, teasing other regions of Canada about their weather is one of the Great Canadian Pastimes!
Actually, if your car doesn’t start because it’s too cold, it will stop you from driving.
It was warm here yesterday, and everything melted. Today it’s cold and snowing - I really love it when all the water freezes and turns to ice and then the snow covers it so I can’t see what I’m walking on. Bleah.
A bit late but Happy New Year all and z Rizdvom Khrystovym for all you Ukrainian folk! Mel Lastman deja vu anyone?
Poysyn , I think once you get settled in you’ll like Edmonton, and ignore the Calgarites, they mean well and try really hard…
The big snow snakes are awakening from their long estivation.

You’ve probably already gone for your walk Cats - but be careful out there! The sidewalks and pathways downtown are really, really slipper today!
Truer words have never been spoken. I think every inch of sidewalk I walked on was sheer ice buried under two inches of snow (i.e. just enough so that your foot would slip every five steps or so). No, wait, some people had already cleared the snow - and just left the ice. :smack:
