Three days of 90+ at my place by TBay took the last of the snow away (a hair warmer than the Turks and Caicos, whose Premier was in Canada today). Still lots of ice on the lake, making for some odd beach scenes on south shore public beachesacross the lake. I figure that the landmass around TBay floated off on the ice, and we’ve drifted down to the the Turks and Caicos. I’m going to have to take up sand skiing.
Nope - we don’t have jobs, either. We’re either very brave or very stupid. ![]()
We’re still planning to move to Lethbridge, so hopefully we’ll be able to find a place in a much cooler market without too much trouble (famous last words?).
The weather here has been damned near perfect recently - we’re not leaving Calgary because of the weather. It might be hard for Southerners in the US to believe, but I think Calgary has fantastic weather (in spite of all my bitching and moaning every winter).
A couple of computers with high speed connections and you’re good to go for living as long as you want in Spoons’ basement – the kids that he never had returning to the nest.
Hey, now you’re talking!
Huh? My basement? I never agreed…
Oh crap. I just realized, I’m a Doper. I have an obligation to other Dopers.
'Kay, so you can stretch out by the cat litterboxes.
Enjoy!

Mmm, I love the smell of cat litterboxes in the morning…
So, then it’s an adventure. ![]()
Yeah, yeah, that’s it - an adventure! ![]()
‘Adventure’ is defined as “someone having a hard time a long way away”, so yeah, it’s probably an adventure. ![]()
So, any jobs out there? I graduate in three weeks.
There are tons of jobs out here - come out and visit already! ![]()
Then how come you’re both unemployed? ![]()
Because working is for chumps. ![]()
Also, because Cat Whisperermostly does temp work, so jobs kind of come and go for her and it doesn’t seem to make sense for her to get tied up in a job in Calgary when we’re fixin’ to move to a different city. And as for me, because I got laid off in November from a company that has run out of work due to their estimating division is hopelessly out of touch with the changes that have taken place in this province’s commercial construction market since the 2007-08 collapse.
On the upside, I’ve had three interviews in the last week with one follow-up interview scheduled for next week and possibly as many as two more next week as well. So prospects at this exact moment are looking decent.
But mostly, working is for chumps.
Ain’t it the truth.
Glad things are looking up. We (in Ontario) always hear that things are booming in Alberta and even Tim Hortons can’t find workers. I don’t know how factual all these anecdotes are though.
I’d say that if you can’t find work in Alberta, it’s because you aren’t looking. I didn’t really start sending my resume out until mid-March and I’ve been fairly picky about what I’ve applied for, but I also know I could be working tomorrow at something—be it running a paint brush or, as you said, working the counter at Timmy’s—if I really had to. There’s lots of work in the province, especially if you’re willing to move to Fort McMurray.
Too bad there is nowhere to live in that area.
One of the reasons we’re not willing to move there. ![]()
Plus, it’s Fort McMurray. ![]()
There’d better be! I’ve already given notice at my current job/apartment in Ontario.
I should be heading out there about the end of July and if I can’t find work I might have to move in with family .
If anyone’s looking to hire someone with a chemical engineering degree and accounting experience…
You might literally have to beat away employers with a stick.
I can’t even begin to tell you the number of people I’ve met that commute from various places to work in Ft Mac. One dude was commuting from Comox to Ft Mac every other week working a camp job! There may be a lot of employment opportunities but you will likely have to travel a fair bit to get it. Many of my neighbors have an 90 min+ bus ride to work and back every day, and while they get paid for it, it’s still a 12-14 hr day.
