The Canadope Café, 2014 Edition: In 3-D!

Africa’s a big place. Those areas are 1500+ miles away.

Hi, Uzi, great to hear from you! I was thinking just the other day that hasn’t seen a post from you recently. How did you fun yourself in Africa?

Good - that’s what I wanted to hear.

Saw a post from an old boss on linkedin, so I sent him a 4 word congrats. He said he needed a rotational partner and asked if I was interested. I said yes and 2 days later essentially had the job. It is good when people know what you can do and don’t need to have to worry about sending you around the world to do it.

As to Africa? Well, when I’m old and grey(er), I’ll be sitting on my porch (where ever that is: hopefully a villa in Thailand or similar) and I don’t want to be saying that I coulda done this, or I coulda done that. I’ve enough of that in the past. Not going to do it anymore in the future. My wife agrees as well. When you have the opportunity, you go. Otherwise, you regret (unless you catch malaria or ebola or similar!). That’s why we went to Hong Kong and that’s why I’m working in Africa.

Good advice there, Uzi.
And congratulations. Are you by chance in Botswana?

Unprecedented coolness for this time of year. It’s 14 degrees outside and predicted overnight lows of 10 to 14 degrees for the next 5 days. In the middle of August, I need to turn the furnace on. I have lived in this house for 19 years and have never had the furnace on in August.

After the winter we just had (the coldest in 20 years; the coldest in recorded history, depending upon who you believe) I’m seriously struggling with the climate change theory.

ETA: Yep. Just turned the furnace back on.

I could use those kind of “old bosses.” I’d like something a little more steadier than I have now.

How so? That could well be an example of climate change. That’s why the phrase “global warming” is no longer used - the concern is that climate change is leading to extremes of weather.

And the Riders-Als games shows the CFL’s quirks: currently at 1-1.

It sure was an exciting news day in Thunder Bay.

The news report even includes a full colour photograph of the telephone!

I’m going to drive into town in the morning to look at it. Jeepers!

Brian Mulroney calls out Stephen Harper!

Brian Mulroney gives Stephen Harper piece of his mind

Rebukes Harper for getting into a fight with the Chief Justice of Canada:

“You don’t get into a slagging contest with the chief justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, even if you thought that he or she was wrong,” Mulroney said in the interview broadcast on Thursday. “You don’t do that.”

Criticises the government for losing influence internationally, at the UN:

“When Canada, for the first time in our history, loses a vote at the United Nations to become a member of the Security Council . . . to Portugal, which was on the verge of bankruptcy at the time, you should look in the mirror and say: ‘Houston, I think we have a problem.’”

Also critiques Harper for lack of influence with President Obama:

“If you can’t do that, you don’t have much clout internationally. The relationship with the United States is something the prime minister alone has to nurture the same way he would tend to the most delicate flowers in a garden. It’s that important.”

But Mulroney’s not all piss and vinegar. He has some kind words for some federal politicians; remarkable thing is, they’re not Tories.

On Justin Trudeau:

" …he suggested Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau is going to benefit from what he believes is widespread public fatigue for the Tories.
“He’s a young man, attractive, elected two or three times to the House, attractive wife, beautiful kids — this is a potent package when you’re running in these circumstances,” Mulroney said of the eldest son of his one-time political foe.

“Mulroney also suggested the Tories are underestimating Trudeau.
“You’d have to be foolish to sit back and not recognize if somebody’s leading in the polls 14 months in a row, this is not a fluke,” he said.”

And he likes Thomas Mulcair, who he says is the best Leader of the Opposition since John Diefenbaker.

So, did you put a quarter in it and give it a try? Modern communication devices are so fascinating!

I considered it, but I was distracted by a free wi-fi sign. In fact the news later ran with the free courthouse wi-fi story a day or two later.

There was no signal, so perhaps there is a conspiracy between the second and fifth estates, given that the lack of a signal was not reported in the news. (Or perhaps they put up the signs before installing the wi-fi.)

A first-year UW student was killed by lightning this morning during frosh week. That’s kind of spooky to me as I live 5 minutes north of campus and in all likelihood I heard the lightning strike that killed her (there was one that sticks out in my memory as being particularly close :(). I walk to work and when I heard how wild the storm was, I decided to work from home until it passed (fortunately for me the lightning had stopped by the time I had to leave). I even wondered what the local students would do in such weather in they had a class to get to…

Welcome to a new Canadian! My husband, Mr. Mallard, went through his citizenship ceremony this afternoon. I am proud & thrilled to pieces! Here’s to sharing a citizenship with your spouse—something we’ve been working toward (in one way or another) for 13 years. I cried a little bit when we sang “O Canada.”

Congrats! Félicitations! Llongyfarchiadau! to both Mr Mallard and Dr Drake! I am so proud that my country helped you both to achieve your dream.

Anyone one x-country skiing in Calgary yet?

We’re just going to need a canoe to get to work here - same weather system is just dropping a lot of rain.

Congratulations to both of you! That’s wonderful news

One of the Franklin expedition missing ships has been found.

Wow!
