Clinton did, but the SOBs tried to impeach him.

What I’d like to know is when are they going to release this damn video, instead of talking about it. Safe to say being the mayor, Ford’s fate lies in the hands of public opinion.

The police say that the video will only come out as evidence in the Lisi trial. For all we know that might not be for months.

Which raises a real question - if the Mayor has not been charged with anything, why is the Chief of Police holding a press conference to announce they have the video? The normal rule is that the police don’t disclose evidence to the public. They gather evidence solely for the purpose of investigating a crime. If they have enough evidence, they lay charges and send the evidence to the Crown. The Crown discloses the evidence to the defence lawyer, and eventually it gets entered in court.

The police chief holding a press conference so he can say “as a citizen of Toronto, I’m disappointed in the mayor” is bogus. He should keep his personal opinions to himself, not hold a press conference in his uniform on the job.

Police are not meant to be involved in politics, and that’s what this stinks of.

According to that story it was a closed event for Conservative convention delegates only. So it’s nice that he plays the keyboard, but that makes it seem less like a ‘man of the people’ going out to open mic night at the local bar.

I disagree - in a democracy, this sort of information is necessary to disclose to the voting public (rather like disclosing the existence of the Watergate tapes even before Nixon was impeached.)

I understand that the the police chief said he was “disappointed” in response to a media question, but that sentiment wasn’t the point of the press conference.

I’m curious what our Canadoper legal minds think of this story from a court case in Tennessee - the story of ‘Captain Justice’. Any chance of something like this happening in the Canadian courts?

What, you mean like a lawyer standing up and introducing himself to the court as a different lawyer? (cough, cough)

Well, so far Mr. Ford has managed to apologize repeatedly for something, without ever saying what he’s so sorry for…

He clarified that it was for getting hammered (sic) on the Danforth, “the texting incident” (I didn’t know that one), either Garrison or the Beer Markt (I didn’t catch which), “lots of little things”.

He did not apologize for possibly sending a violent thug with a history of beating women out to extort the video. Actually, it appears he didn’t mention that at all, which is odd, since Lisi is Ford’s friend and is in fact currently out on bail for exactly those charges.

I want governments and private companies putting all kinds of effort into developing the safest nuclear power we can develop, including regulations that allow no monkey business with taking shortcuts. What I don’t want is the government being too scared of public opinion to properly develop a nuclear energy program that we’re going to desperately need (in my opinion).

Or show up in a popular sit-com.

Agreed. Even out of uniform, cops need to be aware that they still represent the authorities; in uniform, at a press conference is not the place to be giving his personal opinion.

And there is not a single mention in that article, not one, of a manufacturer being driven out of Ontario by high electricity rates. No examples. No references to a stream of manufacturing leaving the province due to power rates. Nothing except the headline. How about that.

Believe me, I know how screwed up our power rate system is. But the idea that manufacturers are going to uproot for another jurisdiction over their hydro bill is a bit silly.

As Gorsnak points out, you can make carbon taxes revenue neutral - in fact, you’d have to if you wanted to get any vote from me, that’s for sure. Why don’t we reduce income taxes (thereby reducing taxes on something that is perfectly good; making money) or take sales taxes off some items or something, and implement a carbon tax proportional to the projected lost revenue?

How do you know if a warlock lives on your street ? Fireballs ride the power lines. It happened during a windstorm last Friday in Lachine, a suburb of Montreal.

Snow. Fuck. And judging by the long range forecast, not likely to melt till April. :frowning:

'Nuff said.

Ixnay on the owsnay.

Come to think of it, can we make that Canada’s national motto? “Snow. Fuck.”

Wow! That looked like something out of a sci-fi movie!

You folks just aren’t Canadian. :stuck_out_tongue:

My ski season’s first tracks at the end of October – snow on moss.

Bring on the snow!

I didn’t like you in May when we couldn’t get rid of the stuff and you kept talking about skiing, and I don’t like you now. :stuck_out_tongue:

At least I have an indoor venue in which to put my snow tires onto my car.
