Oh. And, here I thought it was this one.
Did you hear Rita MacNeil was detained by customs at the airport last night?
Yeah, she was caught with 200 pounds of crack.

Yeah, she was caught with 200 pounds of crack.
The only Rita MacNeil joke I know is in particularly bad taste now; did you hear Rita MacNeil has flesh-eating disease? Yeah, she only has three years to live.
We’re spending the weekend at The Calgary Expo again this weekend - wheeeeee!
We also took in the “Weird Al” Yankovic show last night, and it was worth the price of admission for “Canadian Idiot,” “White and Nerdy,” “The Story Begins…” and “Yoda.” ![]()
And tonight we’re also seeing the Calgary Roughnecks in their first playoff game! Whoo hooo!
Busy weekend! I’m in class for another hour and a half, then it’s lunch and the expo for me too! Yay!
Won the first playoff game handily - 15-10 final score for Calgary Roughnecks! WooHoo!
The Expo was good, too. We got our pictures taken with Walter Koenig.
20 degrees! I’m putting on shorts and going to hit a bucket of balls!
Yabba dabba doooooooo!
For those of you who care for this Twitter thing, @1813now has been tweeting events of the Battle of York as if they are happening in real time, and not 200 years ago.
From yesterday -
How do we know it isn’t actually happening in real time?
I was rehearsing across the street from the site of the first parliament yesterday - the only Americans were tourists looking for the Distillery District.
That’s a relief.
So we somehow managed to buy a house. Our apartment is being listed as available for rent, with visits expected mid-week already. We’ve cleaned and organized and the apartment hasn’t been this clean in…I’m pretty sure ever. We are accumulating boxes, and will move in June to a 3BR, 1 bath 60+ year old semi-detached that is much, much closer to work and has a nice big yard (for Montreal, that is!)
Holy shit.
I’ve become somewhat obsessed with the idea that we need a lawn mower. I have never mowed a lawn in my life, and I don’t know which one to buy! For some reason, this is the thing that is stressing me out the most, when really everything else should be!
So excited!
Congrats!
Congratulations! Home ownership is the best, aside from all the expensive maintenance, shitty neighbours and snow shovelling. ![]()
We typically just get a cheap-ass mower and run it 'til it dies, so my advice isn’t particularly useful on that item except to say that I have never yet been thrilled by the performance of any push mower. They just don’t seem to do as effective a job at nipping everything. Plus I’m lazy and prefer to let electricity spin the blades. ![]()
Good for you!
My push mower is a Honda. “A Honda?” you say. “That must be a very good mower.” Yes, it probably is, but it weighs a tonne. I got it second hand for a great price, but lugging it about the yard is a lot of work. Of course I cut with a lawn tractor and the push mower is used for ditches, under trees and stuff, but it is a pain.
My advice would be to find something light. Lawns at this latitude only need a cut or two in May, three more in June, three more in July, a couple in August and one in September. You can easily get by on 10 to 12 cuts a year. You don’t need a Honda for 10 hours per year. Buy the cheapest, lightest piece of Chinese crap you can get a hold of and it will last for the rest of your life.
Congrats on the home.
If you don’t let the grass get too long, consider a reel mower – you push it along under your own power, rather than crap up the atmosphere with a gas motor or zap yourself running over an electrical cord. I don’t know what the battery operated mowers are like.
Congratulations, mnemosyne! Welcome to the world of home-ownership! I’m sure you’ll become very familiar with your local big-box hardware stores.
Congrats Mnemosyne.
One of these days I will take the leap. I’ve been getting ducks in a row with regards to downpayment etc so it may even be sooner rather than later. Scary…
I already have a lawnmower though (rent a duplex, we do our own yardwork). I just bought a cheapie electric from Rona, it’s worked the last few seasons though I may need to have the blade sharpened this year (I don’t know, I’ve never done it).
Have you ever considered one of these? Move it a foot or so every day, and in the autumn, you get Lapin au cidre…
Congratulations on the house!!
So tired. Got back last night from an Exercise in Moose Jaw. Wasn’t super busy, but there was a guy nearby my cot that had sleep apnea. Yawn!
Congrats on the new home.
As for the lawn mower, depending on the lawn, you want the larger model of the organic lawnmower recommended by Le Ministre
or you may want the SDMB approved version ![]()
