The Canadoper Café 2024 is now open!

Yes, I note the National (Com)post has a front page article espousing the “best” of Rex Murphy, in which he shows his total lack of scientific knowledge in a quest to personally insult the 2012 Canadian Parliamentarian of the year.

Well done NP! This is truly Rex’s best work, showing his ignorance, lack of humility and eagerness to attack others with his massive and obtuse verbiage.

Looks like the Toronto tow truck wars are still in full swing.

Hoping many of you have had a chance to see the northern lights in the last few days.

Here’s a song my friend Mip wrote about them - https://youtu.be/4rLSbqpn4eM?si=Nt_3MvQlrH-HZIzm .

(She grew up in Smithers, BC, so the northern lights really ‘some old friend’ to her!)

I’ve seen the lights before. But cloudy here on the best viewing days, though a few here saw them.

However, I did see red.

Didn’t see anything here in Toronto :frowning:

Happy May 2-4, everybody!

Anyone up to anything special? I borrowed a friend’s vacuum, and I’m doing that kind of once-a-year, move all the furniture, clean everything kind of weekend. That, and Hobbit homework, practising, and maybe reading if I get enough done before I totally collapse.

One of Canada’s most notorious serial killers, Robert Pickton, has taken a broken broomstick to the head and is in critical condition:

Le Ministre, would you have any interest in running short fiction contests again? Just reviewing a few of my past entries. I doubt I ever would have written them without a contest to shoot for. I know, it was bragging rights only, but they were fun.

Might you resurrect them?

As the Insane Clown Posse said,
you fall asleep and wake up dead
with a broken broom sticking out your forehead

People who are sent to prison, shouldn’t be killed there. That being said, I will not lose any sleep over Pickton tonight.

The remains or DNA of 33 women were found on the farm. Pickton once bragged to an undercover police officer that he killed a total of 49 women.

Although the Edmonton Oilers have never been my team, it has been too long since any Canadien team has brought the Stanley Statue home. Here’s hoping they win their division and go on to declaw the Panthers. Go Canada! :canada:

My nephew worships McDavid, and I want that kid to be happy, so I guess I’ll at least not obstruct the bandwagon.

Interesting news item;

C’mon Oilers!

In other news, mildly saddened to hear Toronto’s Phoenix Club is no more. Decades ago, that place attracted big alternative bands, and I had a lot of fun times there.

Water restrictions in Calgary. The Bearspaw feeder main, 2m in diameter at points and 12kms long sprung a leak on Wednesday night, and they still haven’t determined where the break is.

Stage 4 water restrictions, absolutely no exterior watering, and we are supposed to avoid showers, baths, washing dishes, laundry, etc. so that there is enough water available for fire suppression.

Second day of sponge bathing and man, do I want a shower. To think just a few decades ago showers were not common and a once a week bath on Saturday night was the thing.

Saint Anne’s Anglican Church in Toronto was completely destroyed by fire early Sunday.

“The St. Anne’s website said the church in 1923 commissioned founding Group of Seven member J.E.H. MacDonald to oversee designs depicting the life of Christ on the building’s interior. MacDonald then signed on nine other artists, including Franklin Carmichael and Frederick Varley.”

It was also a fantastic venue for sacred and classical music concerts - the dome gave it an acoustic that was absolutely unique. Toronto is in mourning for an incredible landmark today.

I’ve just learned of the passing of Donald Sutherland at the age of 88. An underrecognized Canadian icon, an outstanding actor, and a great gentleman.

Another great actor gone.

It’s strange, isn’t it: lots of hundred year old buildings last fine if properly maintained, but so many buildings built in the 1960s seem to fall apart so easily.
