Primarily of interest to Canadian musicians, but we lost one of the greats on Wednesday. Jack Long, founder of Long & McQuade, passed away at the age of 95. There are now over 100 outlets of L&McQ across Canada, and they are a lifeline for Canadian musicians. I can’t even begin to tell you how much of my musical equipment was bought or rented from them. Among other things, you can rent something in one city at the beginning of your tour and return it to the city at the end of the tour!
I think you mean angry Canadians. People who deserve the protection of the Charter as any other person in Canada. People who don’t deserve to have their bank accounts frozen because they disagree with their government.
Also, you assume that the Conservatives are more against freedom than the Liberals and would do the same or worse. Yet the evidence and the courts belie your assumption. But you have your promised chicken in a pot so all is well, right?
The August 5 Calgary hail storm is now the second costliest insurance disaster in Canadian history.
Ive had one day off since the night of the storm, and expect to be busy with estimates and repairs from this for the next year. Everyone at the office is pretty tired and cranky by this point.
I understand hailstorms affect a wide area and are hard to defend against. Yet I am surprised they are so costly. I must be naive, but many of the individual costs might amount to a damaged skylight or windshield. If this is so, given deductibles one wonders if making the claims were always worthwhile. I must be seriously underestimating the problems that were caused.
Yeah I don’t think you get the scale of this.
This is baseball size hail. Much of the north of the city affected. Windows broken, roofs shredded, vinyl siding like swiss cheese. Cars totalled.
Im preparing estimates ranging from $20000-90000 for a single home.
It will be an interesting by-election in LaSalle-Emard-Verdun on Monday. A three-way fight amongst the Bloc, NDP, and Liberals on the ~91-candidate ballot. The Conservatives aren’t a factor in the previously solid Liberal riding.
Elmwood-Transcona only has six candidates on its ballot.
Complete destruction of roofing in hundreds and hundreds of houses. My father in law did roofing after a major Calgary hailstorm, and was busy for YEARS. $20 - $40 thousand per roof adds up.
It’s cost/benefit/risk assessment. Fiberglass or ashphalt shingles are effective and relatively inexpensive. “hail proof” roofing would cost much, much more. Home builders have learned that consumers will not pay more for a “hail proof” roofing.
In the same storm (a few decades ago) there were hundreds of brand new cars and trucks written off by the hail. Each vehicle looked like someone had gone at it dozens of times with a ball peen hammer. Not repairable. One dealer alone wrote off a couple hundred vehicles.
Stupid question. Would a cheap, thick layer of bubble wrap do anything to protect car roofs from big hailstones? Not a perfect solution, obviously, but possibly practical, if a way could be found to apply it quickly when windy?
It’s not just car roofs. It’s the entire car. I had to have repairs done to the hood of my car once, after hail damage.
Plus the windshield is vulnerable.
And hail storms are usually accompanied by thunder, and all the warnings are to get inside quickly to avoid being hit by lightning.
And in this case, to avoid being hit by hail yourself , which in the case of golf ball sized or larger, could be risky, especially if being hit on the head.
And the wind. Bubble wrap would be vulnerable to being swept away by the wind.
I’m thinking of a thick, large bubble wrap sheet in multiple layers with a sticky side, flaps with ties or hooks for door handles and front and back, and embedded elastic like a fitted sheet. With testing something should be possible, even in moderate wind…?
I recently had my first bout of COVID (thanks, Sis - “it’s just a cold”), and took Paxlovid, which seemed to help reduce the symptoms. Very easy - the pharmacist took my details by phone, wrote up a prescription, and the pills were waiting for me when I arrived at the pharmacy. Even better, OHIP paid all but $85 of the $1,375 cost, and my secondary insurance reimbursed $68 of that. Three cheers for socialized medicine!
It never remotely occurred to me to get Paxlovid delivered when I last had COVID - I was feeling guilty enough that I didn’t test for it until after I got back from grocery shopping (!) that I just stayed in for weeks.
Hoping your bout wasn’t too awful - I’ve had it twice now, and it was brutal! The first time was like that scene from ‘Trainspotting’ where Mark Renton (played by Ewan McGregor) overdoses, and the floor swallows him whole.
I’ve had 4 shots and covid twice after. I never got covid until they dropped the mask mandate then got it two weeks later. Not pleasant having it, but not worse than the flu.
