A single trench coat, standing on each others’ shoulders? Because that would be funny, I have to admit.
Tax payers pay to build huge parking structure, spa gets all the profits! 99yr lease, turns former public access waterfront into private owned water park and profiteering spa, neither of which your average Ontarian will ever be able to afford.
I’m not actually sure of the origin of the image - was it three underage kids in the same trench coat trying to sneak in to an adult movie? Certainly Muppet Man became a trope throughout the Muppet movies.
But, yeah, that’s how I picture it - three developers standing on each other’s shoulders, trying to claim to be the premier…
Not to mention a shrunken version of the Ontario Science Centre that won’t open for another 15 years… I was pissed off enough that my oldest kid got the benefit of the Children’s Own Museum (COM), but they shut it down just before my youngest kid came along. Then the ROM was fucked up for years while they built the crystal, so we spent much of our time at the zoo or the OSC. Now the OSC is gone, too…
And the zoo is a long trek if you don’t have a car!!
Doesn’t the Sheppard East 85 bus still go there? It had its own stop at the Zoo, because the Zoo was where it looped, to go back to Yonge Street.
Any guesses as to how long the postal strike will go on? I’m thinking that it’s not going to be resolved any time soon. From what I see on the news, the postal workers on the picket line seem to be pretty dug in. I don’t miss the daily delivery of junk mail, but I am expecting a few things, so I hope the strike can be resolved before Christmas.
I don’t think Canada Post is quite as indispensable as it used to be, what with Amazon, FedEx and the like. If you can be replaced (maybe not easily), then you lose a great deal of your bargaining position. As a teacher in Alberta, we haven’t seen much of an increase since 2011, and it would take a LOT to make up for lost wages just due to inflation. I don’t hold out much hope we’ll ever see it, and I don’t hold out much hope the Canada Post union will see much more than is already on the table. Sucks, but that’s the game.
It’s undergone a modern revival due to Vincent Adultman.
When the strike was announced, several of my utilities sent out messages about signing up for online billing. Since such bills are 90% of the actual mail I get, I figure everyone who does sign up is permanently lost business for Canada Post. So they’re kind of shooting themselves in the feet here.
My 16 year old is waiting on her new driver’s license and health card to come in the mail, other than that I can’t think of anything in the last 6 months that I have needed to get.
All my bills are already electronic receipt and payment.
Just got my Bank of Montreal credit card statement, and noticed that the payment due date printed on it is Dec 30, 2025. Looks like no overdue payment or interest for a full year!
Somebody goofed, and it looks like something that will come back and bite BoM in the butt.
A friends family runs a rural blueberry/maple syrup operation in NS. The Purolator/Fedex/UPS don’t do pick ups in that area and he has to run into town for the package drops. The couriers are also much more expensive. The strike is definitely hurting business for him.
So how do all you Canadopers feel about becoming the 51st state eh? I’m not sure Governor Trudeau was all that impressed.
Well, at least we got the Matterhorn out of the deal… Is Trump aware that this would include Nickelback?
Over on reddit, even the conservatives seemed pissed off about that. I think Trump may have stumbled onto the one plan to keep JT in power after the next election!
His tiny brain doesn’t realize that Canada, at least relative to the U.S., is very liberal… and as a State will always deliver about 40 Electoral College votes to the Democrats.
There’s no way we’d ever be just one state. We might not be 10+3 states, but could imagine the level of Western Outrage when they realize we’re only going to have one Governor for all of Canada, and that person will almost certainly never be from any other province than Ontario or Quebec?
Just another comment to add to the list of “stupid things that stupid son of a bitch says.”
Was it stupidity, though, or was it provocation? He knows better, despite being a senile old fraud. I suspect that he’ll claim it was a joke, or that he misspoke, but just like Putin with Crimea, Mr. Trump is putting the feelers out for how his base feels about annexing Canada.
Now, officially, when my opportunity to apply for US citizenship comes up in five years, I must be prepared to say that I am loyal to the United States, and that I give up loyalty to other countries. That being said, I am totally opposed to Canada joining the United States under any circumstances, and I would be very surprised if there are many Canadians who feel otherwise.
Nuclear weapons.
I think it is pretty clearly a joke, with perhaps a small side of needling passive-aggression. Although it’s probably true that if Trump respected Trudeau more he might not have made the comment, Canada is right not to take it seriously. However, a clever rejoinder was appropriate, particularly after posting that odd picture of hypothermic suit on shining hill in Europe.
This seems a reasonable take on things.
