One of the greatest voices I’ve ever heard. This is how you sing, kids, without autotune:
RIP Judith.
Australia loved her. RIP.
(oh look, her Dad’s name was Willy Cock. That’s quite a conversation starter)
Wow, just wow. How did I miss her from the 60s? How come I always thought Danny Boy was a stupid song sang badly by old people until I heard this version?
I’m adding The Canivale is Over to my playlist. Now.
Fourteen-year-old me fell in love with Judith when I saw The Seekers on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1967. That woman had an amazing voice.
Thanks for the clips. Definitely a trip down Nostalgia Lane. Here’s one more:
Another of those tiny women with gigantic voices; Durham, Ronstadt, Brenda Lee, Lauper, et al. Loved The Seekers.
I just sang along with “A World of Our Own”… still know every word.
She’s found that world now…
They had the misadvantage for Americans of being mixed up with The Searchers in the bouncy folk-rock British Invasion crowd. You’d think Judith Dunham’s voice would be the tell. “Georgy Girl” was their biggest hit, and that didn’t really sound like them so it was also their last.
I loved folk-rock but it had the lifetime of a mayfly.
Just for interest, here is the Russian folk song it was based upon.

Heaven has a new angel. I don’t think I’ve felt this bad since Dawn Wells died.
Rest in peace, Judith. You were greatly loved.
One of the most clear, projecting, female voices ever. Effortless and perfect pitch. The Georgie Girl clip is from her singing in front of a couple thousand people in Australia. Nails it perfectly.
I can’t think of another singer who projects pure joy the way she did when she was performing.
Bad week for sixties/seventies female Australian singers:
If you can handle one more:
While I like the song in general, I call your attention to the fifth verse (starting about 2:40). Perhaps it’s the combination of imagery and voice, but there’s something about “I am the rock / I am the sky” that gives me chills every. single. time.
Indeed. The Choir Invisible just got measurably better.
