Most teens act like idiots. Few do this all the time. Many are just plagued by random attacks of “Whoo, I’m not going to thinnk at all!”
-
We bitch about school, a lot. Then whe we get out of school (ie, summer break), we get bored, very quickly.
-
We need something to do with our time. Often, we do spend it creatively. But see list item 1 - we also do stupid stuff.

People who make blanket statements such as “All teenagers are stupid” or “All trolls are teens” are just as immature. I frown upon them, forcefully.
Funny, I don’t think “Did school let out?” is a blanket statement impugning every teen who ever existed. Seems some of the teen set might be a wee bit oversensitive here. Trolls and other annoying posters come in all sizes; however, it’s an undeniable fact that there are spikes of this kind of nuscience at the end of every school year. Again, this does not indicate that every annoying poster is a teen.
There’s a lot of teenage assholes out there. However, as a case in point, the most recent major troll I can put my finger on was not a teenager, although most people (myself included!) thought he was.
Automatically assuming a troll is a teenager is not right. Aslan is absolutely right on that point. And I’m biased. I don’t like my species being vituperated. But I’m aware that there are a lot of teenage OMGLOL!!11! morons out there. It’s reasonable to suspect that the SDMB’s latest village idiot may well be a teenager with time on his/her hands.
The point to this post? There wasn’t one.
It’s my youth and inexperience showing through.
I doubt anybody has really recording stats and such to see if trolls really are more abundant when school is out. Probably people just remember when there’s a corrolation, and forget when there isn’t. Much like the old “the ER gets crazier/busier on nights of the full moon” canard.

I would not say so; after all, how would you feel of people were to start making blanket statements over your age bracket?
Do people consistently make blanket statements over your age bracket?
Who’s making blanket statements? As I said, asking if school’s let out is not a blanket statement implying that all annoying posters are teens. Not by any stretch of the imagination is that a blanket statement.
So please provide examples of these blanket statements.
But Dan, it is a statement that rags on teens. When people make those comments, all they really know is that the user is a troll. Assuming from that that the user is a teen and then publicly stating their assumption does reflect a negative and maybe condescending attitude about teens.
The phrase isn’t blanket statement, but there is stereotyping going on there.
I was wrong about it being a blanket statement when said by an individual.
However, what I meant was that I was seeing people asking about school holidays, people always post about it being school holiday whenever they find a post particularly immature/trollish in the summer/holiday(and sometimes even in non holiday times), which seems to be indicative that the general mindset is that people are thinking these people are kids, an unfair sterotype.
It’s an unfair stereotype, definitely - as all stereotypes are, really. And it may be that like many stereotypes it has a grain of truth in it, but this truth shouldn’t be taken to encompass all people of the same age bracket.
A stereotype is a blanket statement. It is a word or phrase meant to be applied to an entire category of person.
If, in my experience, there have been major surges in annoying posters during very specific time frames, such as the end of a typical school year, then it is fair logic for me to presume the possibility that said annoying users are teenagers. It is not fair logic to presume these users most definitely are teenagers.
It sounds to me like some people don’t even want to admit the possibility, despite evidence to the contrary.
Everything you’ve said about teens on the internet is true. However, I do appreciate the good qualities that younger posters bring to the board. Younger posters have a willingness to share issues that older guys like myself would simply suck up and let fester until it emanates as a stench from my pores. I like the social ecumenicism of this board, and their perspective is no small part of it.
No, I see that their is a most likely chance of their being more annoying/trolling teens in the summer/winter. It’s when a good majority of trolling posts are taken as messages posted by teens, that’s when I’m bothered about it.
I sometims see it at Christmas time, although I don’t notice it so much anymore. In fact, in the eighties there was a term that made the board rounds - Christmas modem twits. Those were the kids who just got their first modem for Christmas and immediately went online to their local BBSs, wreaking havoc.
Now, the vast majority of teens on this particular message board is contrary to the stereotype. As has been noted earlier by others greater than me, it is often very difficult to tell one’s age on here, simply by virture of the intelligence and wit of the post. And really, that’s all that matters.
I’m a GenXer. People are always going on about our lack of commitment and it irks me to no end. I’m the real victim here! How would you like it if…ummm…whatever…
Of course there is a possibility. People asking if school is out is basically their way of saying “Annoying teen, go away!”. I don’t think it’s too much to ask that people stop with comments like that.
I think you might be assuming too much, but I see no reason not to comment thusly.
Oops. I meant that I see no reason to comment thusly.
Not not.
IOW, I see no reason to put it that way, no strong reason.
[hijack] We did? When? What about? [/hijack]
