I won’t name any names - There seems to be a regular occurence of idiots here on the SDMB. someone arrives, behaves like an idiot, then is forgotten. As soon as he is forgotten another one arrives.
This makes me wonder - is there a link to the SDMB in some place that idiots frequent?
How is the SDMB attracting these people so regularly?
Or is it just one person re-registering again and again?
Or is it just me, imagining things?
There’s word of mouth, there’s people typing in “straightdope.com” just for kicks … it’s happened before in chat, I know. There are links from other places to this place and there are probably more than a few people who do web searches and come up with hits to cecil’s columns, then get to the MB from there.
Also, for every loud and obnoxious newbie there are dozens of other lovely ones. Remember when Fingolfin’s thread was linked on /.? That got dozens of people, if not more than a hundred, to register for the express purpose of posting in that thread. I do not recall seeing any causing trouble.
I guess that makes sense I/we will tend to only notice the troublemaking ones.

Actually, it wouldn’t surprise me if it was the same few people re-registering again and again. I’ve seen it done on another board I’m on. One guy there kept getting banned and he simply comes back with a new username. He ended up having registered something like 15 or so usernames. What a wanker.
I am somewhat new but I do not consider myself in the catagory of a non-sensable, idiot, newbie to SDMB, atleast I hope I am not on your list:) Anyway… I would have to agree with dantheman, I think younger dopers are getting out of school and are spending more time on the computer then outside, but in general I think the good out weighs the bad :)
I probably should pay more attention to the “welcome our newest member member” link on the forum page.

Come on, you know this cliche is fucking stupid, stop using it. Don’t go blaming the youth just because some idiots are acting up. Thats just plain ignorant. Just because someone acts like an ass doesn’t make them a teenager. I could give some very nice examples but I think i’ve made my point clear enough to refrain from the name dropping.
It’s not ignorant. Every year in May and June, there’s a huge influx of kids who just got out of school. This is not speculation.
Maybe if you dropped your attitude you’d be able to look at things more clearly. I am suggesting that schools letting out now might be a reason. At no point did I state it was the reason. So kindly get over yourself or take your gripe to another forum.
My first thought on reading this thread was “Auuuugh! What if Lobsang’s talking about me?” I hope not… I don’t think so… but you never know.

…Like every kid is waiting to get out of school to FINALLY get on the internet and annoy the message board for the summer. Come on, kids can get on whenever they want, summer has nothing to do with it. It’s a blind comment against a wide group of people. We have lots of teenagers on this board who are good examples of maturity. I’ve mentioned this in another thread a while ago… Your age does not give you superiority or inferiority. Treat assholes as assholes.
A simple sorry would have sufficed and we could have been done with this 2 posts ago. Keep your pride and tell me to get over myself again.

I am talking about the few (maybe 5%) that stand out because of their idiocy/trollishness.
Okay, macabresoul, it’s really not that big of deal. I’m 17, and I took no offense to that whatsoever. I would guess that many of these newbie assholes do turn out to be teenagers who are bored and have nothing else to do except try to get noticed by complete strangers they’ve never met. This does not mean that all of them are. It’s just that a great majority of teenagers don’t possess a great deal of maturity. Trust me, I know, I am one and live amongst plenty of them.
I don’t know if I buy “just got out of school” thing myself. If we’re talking high school, they’re already living at home, so that doesn’t enter into it. If we’re talking college, what university doesn’t have internet access already? Yeah, some kids have more time on their hands now, but so do teachers. Maybe we’re getting more teacher than normal. Yeah, that’s it. 
I think we always have an influx of idiots, but we have an influx of non-idiots as well. The idiots are just more noticable.
I also think this thread belongs in the Pit.

macabresoul, I’m a college student and I’m posting a lot more now that classes aren’t getting in the way. Some students are just bored (like me) and get their jollies out of annoying people (unlike me, somewhat).

5% of that is 1782.95 people. That is a massive overload of trolls. I agree there are lots of idiots but damn, I could probably count them on my fingers. More like .001% of the people here are idiots. They come and go, what are ya gonna do…

It’s OPs like this that make relative newbies like me nervous. See, I HOPE I’m making sense…but according to my family, I’ve got more than a few screws loose, so who knows. It’s not that I take offense to it. I just think it’s an unfair generalization. I agree SOME of them do turn out to be teenagers, but do the rest of the teenagers have to suffer with being labeled as immature because an anonymous asshole starts trolling?
And some 30 year old unemployed mall Santa’s who live in the basement of thier parents house get thier jollies off at annoying people too.
