I guess part of it is the way that gossip can be exchanged in real time there. If one hasn’t gotten into the chat room, it can feel like one’s being passed up. Or something.
I felt a twinge of cliquishness when I first tried to get onto the chat room. I saw that roughly a dozen people were chatting, and I couldn’t get the dad blamed IRC to work! Then, I downloaded mIRC, and I can be part of the “In” crowd whenever I want.
Come on in, people! It’s chat, spelling doesn’t count! If nothing else, just pop in and say Hi.
You say “cheesy” like that’s a BAD thing.

I think it is only fair to warn all of those who haven’t ventured into the chat room yet: it is HIGHLY addictive.
It starts out innocently enough - lots of laughs with fellow SD’ers. Then it starts to get ugly - you find yourself wondering, who is in chat? What are they talking about? What am I missing? I MUST CHAT!!
Just remember that you were warned…

Honestly, I don’t think we’re a clique in that we don’t actively keep people out (unless they come on with someone else’s handle). However, there are several in-jokes that posters who don’t chat won’t get.
