Not in that situation - they’re specifically trained to knock it down. Situational awareness is an important skill for a DB.
But once you are in coverage you operate on instinct. And most teams don’t train for “4th and 28 from opponents’ 26 win under two to play.”
And there’s always a chance that a well paid corner has bonus incentives for interceptions in his contract.
Revis doesn’t. His (gigantic) contract consists solely of non-guaranteed base salary. Bit much to expect him to think about whether he will benefit financially from doing something halfway through a play, anyway.
I think they were just happy to see Revis do something this season, even if it was effectivly boneheaded. Revis Island is well on its way to merging with Nnamdi-land.
5 straight games without a sack for Jadeveon. Teams are planning to take him out of the game, and are. When Ndmukong Suh was being double and triple teamed, he still was able to produce 12 sacks and 24 TFL. Just sayin’.
What? PFF has him as their #1 or #2 cover corner. He’s been superb - just not as good as he used to be.
Welcome back to the 2014 draft race. Let’s take a look:
- Houston Texans, 2-11
- Washington Redskins, 3-10
- Atlanta Falcons, 3-10
- Minnesota Vikings, 3-9-1
Rather shockingly, the four current lowest-ranked teams are all playoff teams from last year, including three division winners and a top seed. Houston fired its coach already, and there’s lots of “Fire Shanahan” chatter in DC.
There are five teams all with a 4-9 record: Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Oakland Raiders, Jacksonville Jaguars, Cleveland Browns, and Buffalo Bills. Here, some early favorites for the #1 pick in the next draft have gone all winning-streak on us, but early failures keep them with high picks anyway.
The following teams have been officially eliminated from the playoffs: New York Giants, St. Louis Rams, Pittsburgh Steelers, Tennessee Titans, New York Jets, San Diego Chargers, and the poor Miami Dolphins (the only one with a winning record at the moment).
That can’t be right. If Miami wins out and Baltimore doesn’t, then the Dolphins take the Wild Card. The Jets could potentially finish 9-7 - if neither Baltimore nor Miami wins 2 more games, that would be good enough for the WC. There are still scenarios (far-fetched, but possible) in which Pittsburgh takes the WC with a .500 record.
I actually think Miami’s more likely to end up with that last WC spot than Baltimore.
I read the chart wrong, dammit. Technically, only the Texans have been eliminated in the AFC, although it’s tough to imagine anybody but Miami getting in.
This has gone from being an extremely deep QB class to kind of crappy, what with injuries and Mariota going back to school.
As a UCF fan it pains me to say this, but Blake Bortles really needs to declare for the draft because he’ll be the second best QB prospect out there. He’s scarily similar to Ben Roethlisberger on the field. He’s not going to shed tackles quite as well, but he has better speed so he won’t have to. He’s also shown Bradylike ability to make plays when the team needs them to win a game this year.
As a Buccaneers fan, I’m somewhat happy about the weakness of this draft. It means the team might give Mike Glennon a shot to develop into the quarterback of the future, and spend the first round pick on a tight end or pass rusher. I’m not sure there are any elite TEs in this draft, though.
I’m still not sold on Clowney. He got a ticket for doiing 110 mph over the weekend. His performance this year has been unimpressive. Hasn’t shown much of a work ethic. I think he has serious potential to be a JaMarcus Russell level bust in the NFL. Glad my Saints won’t be in a position to draft him.
I can’t imagine anyone is still seriously taking Clowney first overall. I got to see him up close and personal when we played South Carolina and I wasn’t impressed at all. He had two tackles and zero sacks playing against the weakest blocker on our offensive line, the right tackle (a converted tight end).
If it’s Houston as is expected, they have a bigger need at QB and DB than on the DL. I guess they might trade their pick, too, but I don’t see a team trading up for Clowney, either.
I’m a UCF fan, too, but I’m not so sure. He has plus size, plus mobility, and a plus head, but he doesn’t have the cannon arm NFL scouts look for. His outs and digs usually have significant arc to them, especially when he can’t step into his throws. Roethisberger has a much stronger arm.
He may be wise to go, just because he might be more likely to hurt his stock than help it, and he may be #2 off the board (ISTM it’s deep in question-mark prospects, which is not the same as crappy), but I’d rather see him taken in the 2nd/3rd round and go somewhere and develop. Arizona would be perfect.
Washington plays Atlanta this week, so one of them (Falcons) has to win.
I genuinely see UCF as a national title contender if he comes back. Just about every starter will be returning for a one loss team.
Yep, except for the O-line. They’d have to run the table though, and I can’t see that happening given their penchant for playing down to the competition.
Draft order for the first 10 picks is currently:
- Houston
- St. Louis (via Washington)*
- Jacksonville
- Oakland
- Cleveland
- Atlanta
- Tampa Bay
- Minnesota
- Tennessee
- Buffalo
*St. Louis also is poised to pick again at #14 with their own pick. Wow - they’re set to make a very strong comeback in the next few years.
Honestly, who saw Houston’s epic collapse coming?
