"The Clowney Clusterfuck" - The 0-16 NFL Season Thread (2013 ed.)

Having now seen the Jags up close as a 49ers opponent, holy crap are they bad. There was some bad bad football this weekend (Bucs, Jets, Vikings, Steelers) but the Jaguars were pitiful.

Florida has three wins between its three NFL teams. :frowning:

“Pushed out” is kind of misleading. Wilson could have come back to the team if he wanted. But he insisted on continuing to explore the possibility of a career in pro baseball, and N.C. State’s coach finally decided to move on with a guy who was committed to football only.

And Miami started out 3-0! Crazy.

Outside of the Colts, the AFC South went 0-10 in October.

That’s impressive. I’ve never seen a team more determined to claim defeat than the Tampa Bay Bucanneers. Up 21-0 in hostile territory against a conference leader, they pulled together an overtime loss. Say what you will, but these guys really know how to lose the close games; a trait that will aid their quest for perfection down the stretch when other teams are packing it in.

Giving that game extra import was the Jaguars on a bye, meaning they couldn’t win (although they tried anyway by losing a star wideout to a drug suspension*). The Bucs loss in Seattle keeps our tally at two winless teams, with a one-loss Vikings squad playing with all the gusto of the Washington Generals right behind them both.

*: here’s hoping Blackmon gets his problems straightened out off the field.

As a Buccaneers fan, the Seattle game was pretty awesome for me on several levels. First, I didn’t have to watch it because I knew the outcome and had a lot of homework to do anyway. Second, the team put together a stellar half on both sides of the ball and most importantly established that Mike James is capable of carrying the mail when necessary, which should prolong Doug Martin’s career. Third, we made sure to piss away the game at the end and ensure we remain in the running for the #1 pick.

How about that? Jacksonville “stole” a game. Have to give them credit for the defensive play that sealed the game.

So that’s it then? The buccaneers “won” it? What is their prize? Is the SDMB going to send them a card or something? Or are they only half-way there because they have 8 more games to lose? Was it last team standing? Someone help me out here!

They haven’t won it but they have a one game lead over Jacksonville. The prize is the first pick in the draft and at the time of the OP the smart prediction was that the first pick would be Clowney from South Carolina. Now do you get it?

The Giant better get rid of their current success or they will be picking in the middle. They need a top pick.

From the OP:

It’s a thread where we track the NFL teams “competing” for last place, who will end up with the #1 draft pick in next year’s draft. We certainly root for someone to go the full 0-16, but that’s only happened twice in NFL history. Even if the Bucs win in the next week, the thread will remain active.

Right now the bucs have a much better opponent winning percentage so if we win a game the jags will get the pick back.

It only happened once, Detroit in 2008.

Fine, let me amend my statement.

We certainly root for a team to go completely winless during the regular season, but that’s only happened twice in NFL history.

For 20 minutes, at the bottom of the Mariana’s Trench.

If the Bucs can get through tonight’s game without a win (damn you, Richie Incognito!) then here’s the remainder of their schedule:

Home against Atlanta - not a guaranteed loss, but I think that they can pull one out there.
@ Detroit, who have been surprisingly tough
@ Carolina, who have been surprisingly tough
Home vs Buffalo
Home vs San Francisco, who may be desperate by then
@ St Louis, who looked very good yesterday
@ New Orleans, who have been pretty strong all year, but hopefully this won’t be a meaningless game for them.

I think TB’s best chances for a win are tonight and against Buffalo. Surprisingly, except for Won/Loss, the Buccaneers are not last in any NFL category. On paper, they are surprisingly mediocre, and should probably be in the neighborhood of 4 to 8 wins for the season.

The '76 Bucs and '08 Lions can drink their champagne, the last winless team finally snagged one, on the back of a dominant rushing defense, and an effective rushing attack.

I did find it odd that neither announcer mentioned that Revis cost the Bucs 47 yards of field position by intercepting that 4th down pass instead of knocking it down, which could have really come back to bite them if anything had gone wrong with running out the clock.

I must take part of the blame on this one. The Bucs were winning, 15-0, and I switched on the game after getting back to my hotel (I am from Tampa, but mostly work in California). Miami immediately marched down the field and scored a touchdown to cut the gap. Then they took the lead, but I had to eat dinner and missed the end, or I’m sure that the Bucs could have held on to lose with my mojo on their side.

(FTR, I actually like the Bucs, I just want to be rid of Schiano and Mark Dominick as soon as possible)

I think that they drink Cold Duck or maybe some Colt 45 Malt Liquor from a brown paper bag.

It’s hard to fault a cornerback for just taking the pick, though. It’s what you’re trained to do.
