Glennon was surprisingly durable in College. He took quite a few shots but I don’t recall him missing so much as a snap.
It looks like the Giants will take themselves out of the Clooney tourney. I expect them to win 3 or 4 games. Not that they are any good but I don’t think they are as bad as they have looked in the first 6 games.
I think the Bucs will win something. Despite their dysfunction, some raw talent will win out on one or two of “any given Sunday”.
That leaves the Jags. They might just pull off the “Clooney Clusterfuck”.
Assuming the Jags “win” the first pick, do they take Clowney? They have a lot of need on that team, and could probably get a lot of picks to trade down…
Lots of need everywhere < lots of need at quarterback. They’ll take Teddy Bridgewater (who I have to say I was not impressed by last week).
I’m a Chiefs fan, and we “won” the first pick last year. Of course, being the Chiefs, they decided to be terrible right before one of the weakest drafts in history (at least at the top). I’m sure they tried to shop the pick around, but didn’t get any takers.
But both Clowney and Bridgewater are pretty legit #1 picks, depending on your needs. The Jags certainly have holes all over the place, and would probably be better served by trading the pick for more picks, and bolstering their entire draft. Are Clowney and/or Bridgewater good enough to merit someone making a legitimate offer and coming up from the middle of the draft? Are either one good enough that the Jags/Bucs wouldn’t entertain the offer (unless it’s an absurd Ditkaesque housecleaning)?
Clowney, maybe. Bridgewater, no. There are better prospects who figure to be available next year, like Jameis Winston.
No quarterback, no matter how good, can survive without blockers and other weapons. cf Tim Couch, David Carr, Archie Manning, numerous others. The Jags should trade down and get lots of draft picks.
Andrew Luck did okay with a two-win team. Besides, Jacksonville has been finishing near the bottom of the league for three years now. They’ve already had lots of high picks.
Winston is a redshirt freshman. 2015 earliest.
The Jags offensive weapons are no worse than Washington’s prior to RG3. Blackmon is a stud WR, MJD still has some tread left. They need line help, but they have cap room and can get some.
If they don’t think Bridgewater is the guy they want to commit to, and drop down because they’d rather have Brett Hundley or Tajh Boyd, that’s one thing. But if you need a QB and have the chance to take one you really like, you do it, period.
2015 is next year - that is, the draft after the upcoming one. After the 2013-'14 season he’ll be three years from his high school graduation and thus eligible.
My feeling for a while has been that Mariota is the guy to watch; if he comes out I think he’s going to end up the big hype guy. I think it might be one of those drafts where by the time the evaluations are all done and the picks are actually made, everyone has forgotten what the consensus used to be. It looks like some mock drafts are starting to push him up the board.
I think Mariota is probably this year’s best NFL prospect, but he’s a little undersized - 6’4", but listed at 210 pounds. You know how NFL braintrusts are about that stuff; it’s bound to knock him out of #1 pick contention.
A guy can bulk up, but there’s no machine in the gym to get taller.
Have you ever seen a quarterback bulk up? I haven’t.
Does J’Marcus Russell count, because he really packed it on.
Brady came out at like 210, I think.
Colin Kaepernick added muscle since being drafted. Mariota could add 15 to 20 pounds to that frame.
I think the Bucs have a shot at beating Atlanta. The Falcons are not Clowney Clusterfuck material, but they do have a 2-5 record, and the Cards kicked their asses pretty good this week. (Four INT’s thrown by Ryan did NOT help.) And the Falcons have a lot of injuries. So the Bucs might just squeak out a win next week.
That said, if I had to bet real cash, I’d bet on the Falcons.
6’4" and 210 is undersized?!
Drew Brees is 6’0 and 209
Russell Wilson is 5’11 and 204
Being a little thin for your height is not a detriment to playing QB. 210 is hardly a stringbean, that’s a little overweight on the BMI chart.
Every NFL player except possibly Trindon Holliday would come out as obese on the BMI chart. And yes, it’s undersized. Brees and Wilson are celebrated exceptions. Anyway, I’m not saying I wouldn’t draft him on that basis; I’m saying NFL GMs and owners make decisions on that basis. I would be thrilled if the Buccaneers took him at #2. The more I see of Teddy Bridgewater the less impressed I am.
In other news, I don’t usually approve of in-season coaching changes, since you’re going to have to hire a new staff in the offseason anyway (and pay your current coach). In the Bucs’ case, though, the sooner they get rid of Schiano the better. The locker room is sounding more and more toxic and the sooner he’s gone the sooner all those high-priced free agents can stop grumbling and start acting like veteran leaders.
