I had to take my dad to the ER on Friday (he’s doing fine), and to keep him distracted and cheerful, I started quoting Airplane! at him.
“We’ve got to get these people to a hospital immediately.”
“A hospital? What is it?”
“It’s a big building with a lot of doctors, but that’s not important right now.”
Dad set off the heart monitor he laughed so hard.

Flying a plane is just like riding a bike; it’s just a lot harder to put baseball cards in the spokes.
In the directors commentary, ZAZ talk about seeing the movie in Germany and wondering why the jive scenes were getting so much laughter. Since it was all translated into German, it shouldn’t have been funny. But somebody told them that the black guys were translated with thick Bavarian accents, which preserved the spirit of the joke.
Damn, that’s AWESOME! (thick Bavarian accents)
The follow-up during the trial in the second film is my favorite bit from the entire series.

I read awhile back that Hogan’s Heroes is or was very popular in Germany, and that Sgt. Shultz was dubbed with a very thick Bavarian accent. I gather it’s the preferred accent when you really want to bring the funny.
