The Conduit

Well, it’s been out for a week or so. Does anyone have it? How is it? I’ve got my eye on it and may grab it just for a foray into FPS-dom with the Wii.

It got great reviews and was made by a Doper. How much better than that can it get?

I’ve been playing it all week–two missions left. I thought it looked like a generic shooter, and it largely it, but it controls and plays damn well. Is it perfect? Not by any means. But I’m enjoying it a lot more than I did Resistance 2 or Killzone 2.

It’s a competent shooter with fantastic controls–even the gestural stuff works great. I also dig having the grenades go where my aiming reticule is, instead of taking a wild stab in the dark with every toss.

Well. Much.

I’m playing right now. The controls are neat, and I’ve wanted this scheme for awhile, but it’s not perfect. You turn around very slow, and freeze up if you aim too far to the side, and twice I’ve killed myself by reaching down to scratch my leg and throwing a grenade. That really reminded me how god awful Project Natal will be if it ever actually gets made.

Right now I’m stuck at the part where you learn that they guy who’s been talking to you is a bad guy. There’s an overwhelming swam of aliens that’s killed me about 10 times in a row and my hand is cramping up so I think it’s time to call it a night.

All-in-all, after all the trash I’ve heard talked about it, I’m pleasantly surprised.

Who?

You can adjust both of those. One of the main hyped features of the game is that the controls can be completely customized. Turning speed can be increased substantially, you can make it so you continue turning when when you’re not aiming at the screen, and you can even reassign the grenade action to a button, preventing accidental throws.

Peep it on the pause screen.

Ah, thanks, I’ll check that out. I did find the options screen and saw that I had died 47 times at the Jefferson Memorial. Someone/something kept freezing me and one-shot killing me. It was weird because the first few times I was able to storm into the memorial and shoot 3 or even all 4 of the conduits, but each time I played it kept getting a little harder. My last ~5 deaths were: respawn, take 3 steps, get one-shotted. I was about to give up when I found (also on the pause screen) that you could switch in-game to an easier difficulty. Still, nothing should be that hard on default difficulty.

I’m having fun, though.

Yeah man, that part is brutal. I forget my exact strategy, but it involved running in as fast as I could, while circling the room and tossing grenades at the Conduits, before focusing on the remaining enemies.

I really like the “conduit” concept–it actually lends the game a rather original dynamic, forcing you to constantly evaluate whether to hurry up and take down the conduits, or hold back, but at the risk of more enemies.
