Executive Order: RESTORING THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF WAR
This illegal Trump executive order changes the name of the Department of Defense, which is named in legislation, to the Department of War. As often the case with Trump’s executive orders, the order argues that it isn’t doing anything illegal, when it clearly goes against the wording in legislation.
Importance? Probably trivial, but the symbolism is bad. There’s a good reason why many (almost all?) countries changed their ministry of war to being a ministry of defense after WWII.
If I was a Greenlander, I would see this as a bad sign that Trump is serious about the U.S. military going on offense.
I thought this had to be a joke, but it isn’t.

Nothing says “you deserve the Nobel Peace Prize” like changing the name of the military from Defense Department to War Department. Or is there a Nobel War Prize that I’m unaware of?
I think the opposite. Calling it “Defense” instead of “War” is a right wing trick.
I mean, a reasonable person might say “I think we are spending too much money making war. We should reduce the War budget.” If you force them to say “We should reduce Defense budget” then they can be made to sound bad, however reasonable their arguments.
I approve of calling it the War department, which is an accurate name. I’m just surprised that Trump is the one pushing for it.
I have no doubt that he was told that calling it “Defense” was passive and reactive, while “War” was super-macho and alpha-male.

I was just at my local bar and overheard these 2 20-somethings talking about how “cool” the name change is. They commented how easy it would be to pick up women, etc. They joked that even being a cook for the Department of War would guarantee p****. So the marketing works, and I felt like puking thinking how many 25-year old men around our country are having this conversation.
