The CW's Riverdale (open spoilers)

Riverdale s1e8 The Outsiders

So about that whole drug deal thing. If Jason had enough money to buy that much product, did he really need to do a whole drug deal to make going away money to begin with? And Polly was really on board with that?

So who is really behind the whole construction troubles? The Blossoms, Ronnie’s husband, or both? And who ratted Mrs. Lodge out? I thought she had made a deal with Ronnie to come clean herself. Or was that just about the forgery?

What’s the deal with Mrs. Cooper? Her husband made her get an abortion? And what exactly is it she is “capable of”?

I don’t think it’s a big deal that Jughead kept his Dad’s gang membership a secret. I’m still surprised that Archie’s Dad didn’t know. So it turns out his gang is up to… something nefarious, though it’s not clear whether it is one of the previous troubles, or something as yet unknown. A little bit of a twist with Keller’s special friend being a plant. He’s feeling guilty because Kevin has feelings, but does he have feelings too? And is he gay for pay, or given the job because he was already headed in that direction?

Everybody wants to step in and help Fred. First Archie’s gang and then the real gang. Upside: Jughead in a wife beater. So did Mr. Jones not end up getting rehired last time? Or did he get refired? Unclear.

Next week, Ch 9 La Grande Illusion. Archie and Cheryl?? What happened to his pussy cat?

I didn’t think he bought the product. I got the feeling he was being paid to make the delivery.

Yeah, Jason was a mule, not a dealer.

Riverdale s1e9 - Chapter Nine: La Grande Illusion

Random thoughts as I watched…

"Thicker than blood, more precious than oil. Riverdale’s big business, is maple syrup.”

Lots of great wacky dialogue this episode!

“When Great Grand Pappy Blossom killed Great Grand Pappy Cooper”

“Milquetoast”

Wow Valerie was surprisingly understanding…

The tree tapping ceremony was so deliciously full of wack. The cult of maple syrup! All the red coats and capes. Archie’s “you can do this in your sleep”. Um yeah, I know when you are a teenager and you have to gently tap a hollow spike into a tree like the honor of your family and the future of your progeny all are depending on it is unimaginable pressure, but hey Cheryl, you got spunk. You deserved that “Bravo well done”

Hashtag justice for Barb! I mean Ethel. Is it just me or are they dressing Ethel exactly like Barb? She may have been abandoned by her best friend for a booty call and eaten by an evil plant headed D&D demon in an alternate life, but now she is saved by “lunch and pampering” yay!

Veronica gets a “Mean Girls” back story.

Archie “gigolo” Andrews pimps himself out for a guitar and some sweet sweet college recommendations. And wow all the Blossoms are super creepy stalker obsessed with Archie. I was thinking it was his red hair and… bingo! Confirmed when Mrs. Blossom makes eerie comments about his resemblance to Jason. Which makes the scene where Cheryl kisses him…um…Even Mr Blossom has some awkward half dressed in half tailored suit man talk.

Sidenote: one of the consultants for the show also did Afterlife with Archie, which also played up the twincest inuendos.

“Amazing”/”Terrifying” lol

“Thought I’d tapped my last tree”

“PR debacle”

“Biblical plague”

Wow now Veronica is responsible for Ethel’s Dad almost dying. Her mom isn’t having any, but Ethel forgives her, due to a highly symbolic pearl clutching turned Martha Wayne pearl explosion.

The Coopers are going through the standard attempt to write expose/change password/throw brick through window/fire/pressure the daughter into holding the family together phase of their couple’s spat. Psycho biddy da da DA da da. But - - superspy Polly! “Smile and dance!” Alice Cooper seems relieved.

Special emphasis on the distinctly different subtext and undertones when Veronica versus Cheryl say “Archiekins” and later “Pollykins”.

“Fred, we need to talk”. No not that talk, though Fred later does the break up and add extortion talk.

In the “sticky thick of it”. Maple references abound!

“Scatter my vixens”

“Looking extremely DILF today”

“The ice woman cometh”

Possibly the best moment of the episode, “I’m wearing maple red lipstick if you were wondering why I taste so sweet”.

OK so the Blossoms put Hiram in jail because of the land deal. But… I thought he only did the land deal as a last ditch way to save his fortune after going to jail. We have a chicken an egg dilemma here…

But this does give us a chance to add another post it to the murder board! Soon it will look like Flash Forward…

“Our woman on the inside”

Mrs Cooper working for The Blue and Gold. Which has a bigger budget than the town paper. Hm…

“Storm of chaos”

That’s all folks. Next week episode ten, which some of the actors has mentioned as a big one. And the return of Archie’s Mom, Molly Ringwald. They really should have hired all of the Breakfast Club actors to be the Riverdale parents.

Episode descriptions and titles for the next few weeks, potential spoilers:

“Chapter Twelve: Anatomy of a Murder”

the way i understood the convo btwix the Blossoms was that they had a hand in exposing Lodge’s shading business dealings (by means yet unknown) to keep him out of the land deal. that obv didnt work out too well.

archie does seem to have trouble with the ladies, so far he’s gone thru Grundy, betty, veronica, val, and now cheryl!

i do like how the writers try to stay faithful to the old ways of the archie comix, and yet try to make it their own as well.

Anybody still watching this? The plot just keeps getting creepier…

Did anyone else expect Polly to have faked drinking the strawberry shake, and turn up at the prom? At this point, a bucket of pig’s blood wouldn’t have suspended my disbelief…

Also, it’s weird seeing Molly Ringwald as Archie’s mom. My last memory of her is from Sixteen Candles. I guess I’m old. :stuck_out_tongue:

Still watching over here. I find the series is holding up well.

Yeah, I was thinking to myself “DO NOT drink that shake!” when Mrs. Blossom gave it to Polly

And, about Molly Ringwald: I can see her as an adult, but it’s very hard to picture her as a mom. Luke Perry works just fine as a dad, though, go figure.

If artificial wombs had been invented yet the Blossoms already would’ve cut the fetus out of here. Also why would House Blossom family be paying tribute to House Lodge family for 75 years?

Cue an exasperated Archie telling Kevin he’s starting to thing women are more trouble than they’re worth and he’s ready to experitment. That’s probably too big a deviation from the source material though.

I’m waiting for Cheryl to have an erotic dream about Jason and Archie together with her in a ménage à trois. I loved Veronica publically accusing her of murder & incest in Chapter 10. I’m confused why anyone would thing Archie having sex with Ms Grundy would be a shameful secret though. If she was as old in the comics sure, but otherwise his teammates would be cheering him on.

no I haven’t seen the series so I didn’t know about the Josie thing … when the cartoon was on boomerang years ago someone pointed out that the lead singing voice/character wasn’t Josie’s even though she was always out front …

So kind of have to agree with the Blossoms here; 3rd cousins getting together isn’t that big of a deal (it’s legal in all 50 states). Granted I did once date a guy who turned out to be my 2nd cousin. :smack: Obviously Clifford had other reasons. Also I’m not sure what kind of lawyer Mrs Andrews is, but if she’s a criminal defence attorney she doesn’t sound like a very good once. Archie & co clearly weren’t acting as agents of the police so any evidence they found trespassing would be admissible (of course they’d also be liable for criminal charges). Also did anyone else thing tonight was the season finale? It’s not, that’s next week.

It did feel like a finale, yes. Next week is either going to be INSANE, or horribly anti-climactic. (I also agree they were making too much of the ‘third cousins’ thing. But that scene was COMEDY FUCKING GOLD as a result. ‘INCEST!!!’)

Also, am I the only one who thinks that Penelope and Cheryl gave Cliff a hand in his trip to the barn?

So I’m confused. Were the Blossoms…

smuggling drugs in the maple-syrup barrels? I only got a quick glimpse. I assume this will all come out next week.

Yeah, I’m also having a hard time understanding the ickiness of third cousins having sex. I mean, you’re practically not related. I understand the revulsion of having a Cooper in love with Blosssom, but what Polly and Jason did was hardly incest.

So are we to believe that the Blossom empire is who have been providing the drugs the Serpents sell? If so, maybe heroin OD guy told Clifford about JP and Jason’s deal. After all, he is the one in the video threatening Jason right before his dad comes in.

Looks like it. Which they purchase from the Lodges, I would guess.

I have a prediction (based on nothing I’ve read–just speculation on my part). I think since Cliff is dead and the family business is in shambles, Cheryl and her mother won’t want to live in the big creepy mansion anymore. They might leave town (and the show) entirely, or they might move into a different home. Either way, that leaves that big creepy mansion available…and who’s coming back to town?

Since it’s obvious Veronica isn’t going to be leaving Riverdale anytime soon, I wonder if Hiram will buy the Blossom house (because he thinks it’s good for his daughter to stay in town with her friends instead of running wild in NYC) and the whole Lodge clan will move into it by next season.

I could see the Lodges buying Thornhill, but the Blossom family cemetery might be a bit of a dealbreaker.

Well I’m glad they went the insane route. Cheryl didn’t kill herself, and she almost certainly screwed her mother out of any insurance money over Thornhill. If the Lodges want the land they can get at fire sale prices. Speaking of the Lodges, Herminie casually telling Veronica there’s nothing wrong with sexually manipulating Archie was hilarious; I can wait to see how her & Hiram interact. And at least won’t have to spend the summering wonder who got shot. I think that immediate reveal was the most surprising thing tonight.

Juggie’s narration’s last line…

‘An act of random violence that was anything but random.’

Makes it sound like it was a hit on Fred, made to look like a robbery. Unfortunately, that would require knowing Fred’s movements, which makes it more likely Hermione did it than Hiram, and I’m not sure I want her to go that dark. (Also, yeah…I’m shocked that they revealed who was shot right away. I was also expecting them to wait on the reveal of Jason’s killer. I hope they don’t reveal EVERYTHING immediately, but I do like that they’re doing it sometimes, anyway.)

I just binged the show and enjoyed it a fair bit. But I’ve never read any of the source material, and am only vaguely aware of its existence.

Can someone give me quick primer on what the deal is with the comics. Are they funny? Dramatic? Soapy? And how on earthy did they have a crossover with The Punisher?

thanks

Yes.

There’s also horror comics featuring the characters, science fiction of various degrees of seriousness, and funny-for-unintended-reasons licensed Christian comics*.

The current main comics have ongoing storylines that range from comedy to comedy-drama, the old school main ones were primarily short gag strips, though there were some longer stories and dramatic turns.

  • I’m sure they were intended to be funny, but the intended gags mostly didn’t land, but the terrible writing and shoehorned in proselytizing were a whole lot of hilarious on their own.
