i distinctly remember this 
grin being in green colour… it now seems to be in yellow. Somehow green had a much more impacting (?) effect.
I know this is a trivial concern, but i was just wondering if it were at all possible to have it back in green.

Yes, other people have noticed the change and commented on it. The smilies available are the ones that came with the vBulletin upgraded to 2.2.4, and they are a different colour than the ones supplied with vBulletin 1.x
We have no plans to carry over the vBulletin 1.x smilies to the current version of the SDMB.
Can’t you just add all the old ones to the available list? You already own them, so coppyright isn’t a problem.
I see other vBulletin sites that add smilies without hassle. People ask for something and the mods say “good idea” and boom it’s there the same day. The bbboy site I have lets you add them just by typing the :name: and the name of the gif.
We could add smilies but I don’t see a big reason to. In my opinion what attracts people to the straight dope message board is the intelligent discussion involving a large group of smart posters with many different points of view. The little extras (e.g. many different smilies) are not really central to what makes this board special.

If the posters are “too smart” to care about the smilies, then why do they keep bringing it up?
Maybe it’s the mods that are out of touch. Doesn’t it seem strange that TubaDiva promised many times to add things to the smilies but never did. Always had an excuse, not enough time. But now it’s so easy even she can do it, and it’s become YOUR job to say no, because you are the überstuffedshirt? If you’re so smart, mr CPA nerd, why don’t you run the numbers- it’s less of your time to do it then to tell people they really don’t want it, and imply they are not smart enough for the board.

Actually Duck Duck Goose there are several old threads in ATMB concerning smilies where the staff said in the past “we’ll try to add this or that smiley.” With the current version of vBulletin we can add them without having to bother the IS staff and so we’re discussing how to treat smiley requests. See the current thread by flowbark in this forum.
We’ve had quite a few things we planned to add/do to the site and that’s been true for way too long.
We’ve also had problems that took precedence over adding stuff, mostly concerned with giving as many people as possible access to the SDMB.
This is also not a full time job for any of us, though it certainly could be, there’s more than enough work here. We do what we can as we can do it.
Adding extras is, well, extras. More smilies are extras. Sorry we haven’t been able to accommodate you yet.

As a probably meaningless tangential aside-
when I click on Northern Piper’s link I see some of the words on that thread in red, including two in mine own post, and they aren’t coded to be in color. What’s that?
Just if anyone knows off the top of their heads or anything, I don’t mean to make work for anyone.
(Or the bottom or middle… or whatever.)
Look closely at the URL. Northern Piper searched for the words “pining” and “smilies”, so on the search result screen it modified the link to highlight his search terms. He then included the link as it appeared on the search results screen.
