The Daily Show in Minn./St. Paul

Denver was a little rocky, but they have brought their A-game to the RNC. First night was standard intro stuff (lots of white people? check).

But everything after the (admittedly funny) bathroom stall stuff last night was brilliant. With so many of those clips so readily available, why don’t we see more of the major networks calling out the GOP on the pure, unadulterated bullshit that their talking points resemble now? If you didn’t see it, start with “Sarah Palin Gender Card”–absolutely brutal.

How is it that in 2008 Comedy Central can have a web site that does not work with Firefox? What is wrong with these people?

Works for me (firefox 3.0.1). Ad blocking software getting in the way perhaps?

Firefox 2 here, just needed to allow the right thing through the NoScript filter.

And I agree ArchiveGuy. We shouldn’t need to watch that stuff on a comedy show, it should be on CNN and MSNBC. (And of course, Fox would be there whenever a Dem did it.)

Stewart to Huckabee- “So you feel, that your party is the only party that can fix the problems created by your party.”

The thing about Palin asking people to respect the choice her daughter made and equating that with pro-choice was a little disingenuous though.

I feel like answering this takes us well beyond the scope of Cafe Society, but I have to answer.

It was a choice. That’s what pro-choice is! It doesn’t mean you’re compelled to get an abortion. It’s the freedom to choose whether you keep the baby or not and, from Palin’s own press release as aluded to on the show tonight, Bristol clearly chose to keep the baby. To state you chose necessarily implies more than one option.
So when you say “I’m pro-life but I chose to keep the baby,” that makes no sense. From the standpoint of pro-life there is no choice. Your only option is life.

No, it was EXACTLY on point, and those folk who just could not bring themselves to use the word ‘choice’ demonstrated why.

Absolutely right. The attempt at rationalizing away how they’ve presented Bristol’s choice exposes their argument as the strawman that it is.

Hm, I was going to say that the “choice” could have been between keeping the baby versus adoption, instead of giving birth versus abortion, but looking up the released statement shows the wording was “We’re proud of Bristol’s decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents.” That statement implies that not having the baby was considered as an option, so yes, hypocritical.

Daily Show has been great in Minn. The Obama spoof video was good too, though.

Slight hijack perhaps, but-

While I realize not everyone watches THE DAILY SHOW, you’d think that most people who have a more than passing interest in politics would at least know what it is (a satirical news show that leans left but loves taking on idiots of either ideology). I’ve wondered many times how they get people who are so obviously one-trick-pony shills for their cause to “play” with their reporters; I love the show and I’d NEVER respond to their interviewers if I was involved with a controversial cause, because I know good and well their job is to edit me to make me look like a boob (like the old lady in the Samantha Bee “you be Sarah and I’ll be Bristol” sketch).

For that matter I’ve wondered why people like Huckabee go on when they know they’re going to be mocked to hell and back (and not just David Letterman stuff but with some balls- what Stewart asked wasn’t a rhetorical question but one that Anderson Cooper should ask). Is there really that much of an “any media exposure is good media exposure” vibe in D.C.?

I’ve also wondered if McCain will ever appear on the show again, particularly if he loses the election, for they have freaking skewered and roasted him the past few months. (Those who don’t watch the show may not realize that they’ve also given it to Obama a few times as well.)

I don’t think he was mocking Huckabee, he was mocking the party line. Remember Huckabee spent a lot of time mocking himself on Colbert (who didn’t mock Ron Paul tonight.) I think the Republicans have a healthy respect for Stewart, but if they think they are right they also think that they can’t be seen as being too chicken to show up on a program with a lot of clout.
The turning point was 4 years ago when the Pubbies sent that moron Congressman from Texas with his “Kerry is the most liberal Senator” glurge, and Stewart cut him into pieces. They’re at least respectful now.

I like Huckabee. Not as President, but I like him. I think Stewart likes him too. Huckabee doesn’t try to one-up Jon but he doesn’t try to condescend to him either. And he looks like Kevin Spacey.

I thought Huckabee did great. Yeah, Stewart got his jabs in, but Huck was just so likeable. He’s a great antidote to the Red Meat Palin et al served up this week. The Republicans would do well to have more people like Huckabee (in terms of style and personality I mean), instead of all the nastiness and liberal bashing that seems to be the cornerstone of their party right now.

It’s a bit freaky isn’t it?

I always thought Huckabee quite often resembled Nixon a bit too, but good call on Spacey.

I think the bit they ran before the Gingrich interview was one of the best bits they have had in a while. It was the then/now bit with Rove on VPs, Dick Morris on sexism, and O’Reily on pregnant teens’ parents.

Speaking of that episode, I think that the Gingrich interview was one of Jon’s better ones as well. The Huckabee interview was good too, but different from Newt’s; the former was a lighthearted battle of wits, the latter Jon put on his real news hat and made Gingrich look pretty damned ridiculous (more so than usual at least).

Between the Newt interview(he apparently had floated Palin’s name a few months ago) and the then/now bit, that episode single handily dismisses the Palin pick for the sham it is.

I disagree. The simple fact is that Bristol, along with every woman in Alaska, currently has the choice whether or not to terminate their pregnancy. Sarah Palin would like very much for her daughter not to have this choice, but to somehow imply that she doesn’t have a choice would just be incorrect.

A more complete statment might have been “We’re proud of Bristol’s decision to have her baby, and hope someday this decision will be taken away from her and from all women” – but I don’t think that conflicts with her statement.

It would have been more interesting to see what their statement would have been had Bristol chosen differently.

I agree with that part.

Looks like Huckabee has put a lot of that weight back on. Poor guy. Needs a doper to explain to him that it’s because he’s lazy.

We aren’t privy to the interworkings of the Palin family, but there are plenty of minor women who might have a legal choice, but they have no practical choice to terminate. It is possible that had Bristol wanted an abortion, her mother would have driven her to the clinic (she would be the first pro-life person to do so in those circumstances). Its possible Bristol could have gotten a friend to drive her down. Its also possible that there was no practical alternative that gave Bristol any choice. In parts of the country, the nearest clinic that will perform an abortion is hours away. Parts of the country have parental notification laws that frighten minors away.

Legally, Bristol had three choices, adopt, abort, parent. Practically speaking - she may have only been given the choice to parent. Or parent or make an adoption plan. (Some women are only given the practical choice to make an adoption plan).

No, you see the decision Sarah Palin wants you to respect is her daughters choice to keep the child and not give it up for adoption. I seriously doubt abortion was even a choice at the Palin diner table. I’m pro-choice but Jon Stewart performed all the interview/editing tricks that made Michael Moore famous. That’s what is disingenuous

Well, it’s a comedy show. Michael Moore purportedly makes documentaries, so the misleading crap he pulls is problematic. Stewart’s show, to paraphrase the man himself, is preceded by a show where puppets make prank phone calls. Their standards aren’t supposed to be the same.
