The Dance With Dragons discussion thread (open spoilers!)

I don’t see why he wouldn’t. Theon was at Riverrun with Robb for a while, one of his trusted commanders.

Yeah, Brynden wouldn’t be walking around in the open. He was probably hiding in the crypts, and comes out wearing a hood. Also he is someone who has been missing for a while. It makes more sense than psycho Theon.

Forgot about that. Good call.

Why would the Blackfish go to Winterfell, though? I would think he would be more likely to find some of the rebels around the Trident. There are plenty of Lannisters to kill around there.

Maybe he disguised himself as some minor functionary in the Frey contingent in order to keep close them?

What else is there for him to do but kill Boltons and Freys?

Sure, but he’d be recognized, wouldn’t he? Probably the 3rd most famous Tully. So, one of the ten most recognizable lords from the Trident and north.

Which is why he was wearing a hood and only out during a big snow storm. He wouldn’t necessarily need to be out in the open for all to see.

Well, that was mostly in response to the person who thought that he was one of the Freys’ hangers-on or something.

I personally think Theon is probably a more realistic actor that the Blackfish. I hadn’t thought of Bran remote controlling him, but if that were the case that’d be…interesting. The fact that one of the kills was a child makes it more interesting if it were Bran, since I could see him starting off going after someone “his own age”.

But I guess we’ll see. Eventually. Maybe. But probably not.

It just doesn’t make sense that it would be Theon, if he had a split personality it would be badass Theon helping rescue Jeyne and not Reek Theon.

Makes more sense than the Blackfish hiding in some crypts for…how long now? And being able to safely walk through a castle packed by paranoid enemies with the foolproof disguise of…a cloak with a hood.

Badass Theon doesn’t come out when Reek wants him to, he comes out when he feels like it. Hell, he might come out when Theon is asleep or when Theon is alone or whatever.

I like the Bran idea, though I don’t know if he’s all that bloodthirsty.

Getting here very late to the party. I really like this thread, because a lot of you are sharper than me… I never got Young Griff= Illyrio’s son. That makes the whole thing make a lot more sense, including why Illyrio helped Dany…so she could marry Young Griff and further legitimize him.
There are just too damn many characters to keep track of, the appendices need to be alphabetized. I can’t tell you how many times somebody waltzed into a scene or a flashback and I was just like “who?” Jon Connington, he of the griffins, was a payoff from a few random thoughts of Jaime’s about the Battle of the Bells back in Storm of Swords. How the hell am I supposed to remember that?

Did anybody else think the dwarf attacking Tyrion in Volantis would turn out to be Arya?

Oh and by the way, thank you also for explaining the poisoned coin. I was really pissed with Arya’s assassination initiation ending up as, “oh you just have to get a magic coin to your victim” that seemed too easy. But I want her to wake up and realize " I AM ARYA STARK!" That moment better come.

And Aerys totally raped Joanna Lannister and is Tyrion’s dad right? That was what that bit of Barristan Selmy telling Dany about Aerys liking Joanna was about. And why Tywin said “you are no son of mine” to Tyrion in his last scene.

I am with you all on Quentyn, what a long boring waste of pages.

How come when Jon read Ramsay Bolton’s letter no one asked “Mance? Mance Raydar? What. The. Fuck?”

People I am wondering about:

Septa Lemore
Victarion’s dusky lady
the father of Ashara Dayne’s baby
Gerion Lannister: lost at sea, right.
I really like getting to meet Children of the Forest!

Yeah. My initial reaction when I was reading that chapter was that the other child/short person/dwarf would turn out to be Arya - which was what GRRM was going for I guess. Even when GRRM revealed who the dwarf was, my first thought was “Who? There were dwarves at Joffrey’s wedding?”. It’s just been so many years since I read that book.

Agreed! The appearance of the Children of the Forest was one of the best parts of the book.

Well, I ran out of cereal boxes and and vacuum cleaner instructions, so I’ve read it again.

I remain disgusted.

You were right; I was wrong. Dunno how I got that so wrong so quickly after I’d read it. Maybe I was only skimming towards the end.

I LOVE this theory. I know we should never take old Georgie’s prophecies too literally, but if we see “the sun rising in the West and setting in the East” as Quentyn Martell being born and raised in Westoros but then dying in the East, it could also be that the “sea dries up” refers to Theon Greyjoy (the Kraken, ruler of the sea) being gelded (“dried up” to put it crudely) and the mountain blowing in the wind refers to Dr FrankenQyborn’s headless mountain, who we can assume to be fragile due to being released into King’s Landing before he was “ready”. If this is all true (and I highly doubt it, I just got a bit over-excited by this one  )the there could be some little Targ’s running around in a few years’ time!

I finally finished it. I don’t think I’ve ever taken that long to read a book. Dayam but that was a whole lot of words to get nowhere. He’d better make up for this in the next book.

Not quite. The prophecy isn’t about when Dany will bear a living child. Dany bearing a living child is one of the prerequisites to Drogo returning:

Two ways to read that, given all the things that appear to be connected to it, but she didn’t say when X, Y and Z happen, you will bear a living child.

Yeah, pretty sure that’s what everyone said about book four…

Because he couldn’t accept it. He was clearly in denial about it, and terrified that someone would discover it. It’s also possible that it’s not actually chopped off, but flayed and useless instead. Not much better.

Regardless, if you’re still in doubt, re-read Ramsay’s wedding night.

He must needs to trust an editor. A leal editor.
