The Democratic National Convention

He tweeted that he thought vaccines caused autism during her speech.

Best Free Idea for a Campaign Bumper Sticker:

“No, Donald…”

It’s hard to be objective, but when I try to look at it from the perspective of someone who’s just not sure how to vote, I probably would have thought that the Republican Convention made the case for indicting Hillary Clinton, and for a few days that might have lingered in my head. If I had not made up my mind and continued to watch the Democratic Convention, I think I would have seen not only the indictment of Donald Trump, but of the entire Republican message that was voiced at the convention…without necessarily indicting the entire Republican party or conservative movement as a whole. And that, I think, is key. They found ways to attack Trump while still appealing to the feeling that America, the country, is still good at heart, and that there’s no need to tear each other to pieces to prove how right we are or wrong someone else is. I’m sure there were probably a lot of undecideds who didn’t reflect on it so much, but even if they didn’t, on an emotional level, there’s probably a good chance they would have felt that tone. So I guess what I’m saying is, I’d be surprised if Hillary didn’t get a pretty good bounce from the convention.

The problem, of course, is that bounces are just that – ephemeral movements in an ongoing debate about who should lead. The next 100 days are going to be intense, fast-moving, and full of events that will give both candidates opportunities and threats to their candidacies. And people are still contemplating the Obama legacy and they will use their vote in part as a way to express their satisfaction or dissatisfaction with him, which could pose a bigger threat to Hillary. Time will tell.

In the face of ratings loss to DNC, Trump is telling NYT: “I didn’t produce our show. I just showed up for final speech”.

So who was that Trump impersonator who was around for the rest of the convention?

Catching up here…

I noticed The Two Toms (Vilsack and Perez) sitting beside Bill Clinton. A consolation prize for being passed over for Veep?

Yes, it was - in shirtsleeves, no less. Hope he lands the DNC Chair gig. He could do a good job.

Hillsdale is a very aggressively-conservative college, so I wouldn’t necessarily accept their publications as being the best history resources. I agree with you as to Wilson’s racism, don’t know about his eugenics views, disagree that he “hated our Constitution openly” (no evidence of that, even in his book, Congressional Government), and he was by no means a “virtual dictator during WWI,” despite the excesses of the Palmer Raids.

The late Texas Gov. Ann Richards coined it, I think.

Yeah, that was my reaction, too. I think he was a pretty good pick by Hillary, but he definitely didn’t get off to a good start in his speech.

I’ve thought that myself, although I don’t think it’s just them seeking to line their pockets. Quite a few American bridges, roads, sewer and water systems (Flint, anyone?) are in pretty dire condition.

Can you post a link for that tweet? I want to post it next to Hillary’s “I BELIEVE IN SCIENCE!”

We women must learn to modulate our tone, i guess? So that our audience doesn’t think of being sent to the principal’s office.

It does suck that a woman displaying power and strength is written off. How can women fix themselves so that doesn’t occur?

In the face of an electoral loss to HRC, Trump will presumably note that he wasn’t the campaign manager; he’s just the guy who showed up to make speeches.

I’ve no doubt this is true, and could hardly not be true, really.

This pretty much sums up Donald Trump, really. To The Donald, it’s not really about Mexican rapists or Muslims or whatever. It’s about him, and he’s always great.

Had the GOP convention gotten higher ratings - which, to be honest, I and I think a lot of people kind of assumed it would for the same reason you slow down to watch a car on fire but you don’t slow down to watch a car that’s working fine - Trump would have tweeted

“DNC had 20% lower ratings than my convention! They got beaten badly - again! Sad!”

But because the GOP convention had higher ratings, he says this:

“I didn’t produce our show. I just showed up for the final speech.”

Twelve words in two sentences. The second sentence is a stupid lie, of course, because he showed up and was on stage prior to his speech. The first is at least partially untrue; according to more solid references than I can begin to list, he had considerable influence on the nature of the RNC.

That was a mutated carrot that had escaped from Monsanto.

The carrot is opposed to capital gains taxes.

“Fix [del]them[/del] ourselves”? Oh, that made me laugh right out loud! That’s it-- we smart, capable, articulate women have to modulate our tone so the men don’t get scared.

Serious question: what was it about Michelle Obama’s “tone” that drew only acclaim and no criticism? Did she “display power and strength” or something else?

Yeah, well, she’s a guy, so…

Toned arms.

Somebody should be suing Trump for copyright infringement and defamation of character,

 well clearly we do need to fix ourselves to avoid coming across as lecturing or disappointed principals or something. it’s not the fault of the ones bristling at her tone, Right?

Here’s the thing - i didn’t pick up on that tone. So i wouldn’t know how to fix it in myself. Luckily (i guess) i am not in a position of power so I’m not likely to offend the way HRC did.

She’s not looking for political office?

Did anyone say anything about Elizabeth Warren’s tone as well? Because I think Warren doesn’t ‘modulate’ that much either.

I think people just said that Warren was boring.

Likewise, consider Sarah Palin: I know the SDMB – and America! – rolls a lot of eyes at the content of her speeches, but I don’t recall her getting criticized for the sound of her voice; she occasionally switches to an upbeat and jokey tone for effect, but then goes back to talking like a TV news anchor when she’s not simply being conversational.

When Hillary said that she supports a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United, I was so happily stunned that I actually clapped my hands.

I don’t think I’ve heard any candidate propose this before.
