...the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Thread.

…just got back from a Doctor Who double bill: "Asylum of the Daleks" and The Angels Take Manhattan" at the Embassy Theatre. All I can say is: WOW, this show looks and sound fantastic on the big screen! Some of the effects were a bit obvious when not on the small screen but all in all it was brilliant seeing my favourite Doctor alive and bigger than ever!

There’s some fairy big news about Doctor Who that just broke in the UK. I’ll spoiler it, but it’ll be impossible to avoid I suspect
Matt is leaving. His last episode is this year’s Xmas special

Matt Smith to quit Doctor Who after Christmas special
It’s all over the news now. Google shows twenty news sources reporting. A little surprising but I suppose all good things…

Nature of the show. I was going to start a new thread to speculate, but I’m never sure about doing things like that on a US board. Everyone who walks into a newsagent in the UK or watches a TV news bulletin will know, but elsewhere…

So he lied to us. He gave an interview recently about plans for next years filming.

Sorry bugger can sod off then.

Thats the problem with Doctor Who getting so big. It gives the actors the wrong idea. David Tennant walked out on Doctor Who. He did a failed Hollywood tv pilot and went back to England. Matt will soon be forgotten too.

I stopped watching Dr. Who because of Matt Smith and the writing. Hopefully the writing will get better.

He’s been my least favorite of the new series doctors and one of my least favorite of all of them. I might start enjoying Doctor Who again.

So is Jenna-Louise Coleman out the door too? I wouldn’t be surprised.

They may have a clean slate next year. New writer, new actors.

Don’t be so parochial. Tennant’s done pretty well since leaving Who. There’s a whole world outside Hollywood.

I for one am hoping they go back to a male in the 40-60 age range rather than another young man or a woman or an Orangutan or something.

It is unlikely to be someone well known with a solid established career, so speculating on people like that is fairly useless.

Well, that sucks.

I suspect the BBC will choose a politically correct Doctor this next time. Probably a woman, maybe Hispanic or black? Maybe even a Gay man?

The more PC the better I guess. It’ll shut up the critics that are claiming the show is racist.

Critics claiming it is racist are morons. Please ignore them.

My short list:
Damian Lewis (42)
Mark Gatiss (46)
David Morrissey (48)
Craig Ferguson (51)

OK, the last one is a bit of a joke but he is a huge fan.

Phooey. Sean Pertwee FTW.

A wheelchair bound Chinese/Sri Lankan woman (well she is 13 but don’t call her a girl!) with a harelip.

Stephen Mangan, I say!

He’d be good I think. He’s been saying he’s got career news coming up too (but I think he’s kidding here)

I want them to sign someone who says “if I get this job I’ll never let it go - you’ll have to drag me out kicking and screaming”. I want a Tom Bakerish length reign. To see a bunch of companions come and go while the Doctor carries on.

I was hoping for as much from Tennant. After a single year of Eccleston I wanted a long and prosperous reign by the next Doctor. Wasn’t especially keen on Smith to start but I warmed up to him. Four seasons is one shy of the five I would consider a solid run, but then if they’re stepping back to one season every 2 calendar years (Boo! Hiss!), I can see where it might get a little long.
