The end-of-summer MMP

(It’s close enough to Monday, and since I’m still awake, here goes…)

With today being the unofficial end of summer, at least as far as the US is concerned, I thought I’d share a bit about my just-complete vacation cruise. Don’t fret – it won’t be too long and I hardly took any pictures, so you’ll be spared that.

As we were checking in, the doo-doo hit the fan early. They were trying to charge my inlaws an extra $500 because allegedly, I’d booked them as Maryland residents even tho they’re from Florida. Well, I know full well I didn’t do that, but there was no way to prove it. With the help from a very nice customer service rep, the problem was solved by putting FCD and his dad in one cabin, and my MIL in the other cabin with me – at least on paper. With a Marylander in each cabin, we were good.

Time to board the ship. With two elderly passengers, we could have easily gotten to board at deck 1 and ridden the elevator up. But nooooooooooo, MIL wouldn’t hear of it. She could walk the regular ramp. Yeah, she did, with 2 stops enroute. And I see what I’ll have to deal with when FCD is 30 years older. Anyway, we got up to the buffet deck, had a little lunch, then went to our rooms when we were allowed to at 1:30. We had all of our luggage by 5:30, which was great.

Dinner was at 6, and it was the only meal we ate in the dining room. Our assigned table was in a horribly noisy corner – honestly, you couldn’t hear yourself think! And the other 4 we were seated with weren’t all that pleasant. Plus the service was incredibly slow – who knew getting a refill of water would be such a trial!! We had the rest of our meals from the buffet, which was a huge disappointment for me. On our last cruise, the dining room meals were superb!! Oh well…

I wish I’d known that Bermuda pretty much closes at 5 - we’d hoped to go to the zoo/aquarium, but by the time we’d docked, bought tickets for the ferry and bus, then asked about the zoo, turned out we’d have had maybe an hour and a half to look around. We weren’t too keen on spending another $12 each for a ferry/bus pass for the next day, so we just went into Hamilton. We were in search of another place I’d read about that was supposed to be pretty close to the ferry landing, but we walked as far as the 80-y/o legs could manage and still didn’t get there, so we just caught a bus back to the ship. Pretty much all we saw of Bermuda was out the bus windows.

Moral of the story - don’t plan a vacation that involves a lot of walking with people who can’t handle walking…

The next day, we just wandered around some shops near the ship, then went to the little beach a few blocks away. I got a t-shirt and we got some earrings for our daughter, and we were back aboard the ship with tons of time to spare.

It was pouring when we got to Boston, and it was an early departure day (back on board by 3:30) so we didn’t even leave the ship, despite the sun coming out around 11. Newport was nice, but it was just a shopping day. We did eat lunch in town. Newport - famous for seafood, especially lobsters, and we ate BBQ. What a disappointment… :frowning:

On board, we saw a couple of shows, watched The Hunger Games (What a stupid movie) and lost about $25 in the casino. I do not get the appeal of gambling. We got some time in the hot tubs and bought one photo that was taken in Bermuda. I also bought 2 bottle of Kahlua and FCD got a globe paperweight that he’d been wanting since the last time we were on that ship. I also got my daughter a pashmina from the $10 sale. All told, we spent less than $150 on board, including our casino losses.

The return to Baltimore was fun for me. We sat on deck as we passed the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel. It was wild watching the approaching headlights just disappear as they went down from the bridge to the tunnel. Then we were in the bay and it was DARK!!! We got up early the next morning and stood on deck as we came into the berth – it just amazes me that a huge ship can maneuver itself gently into position with tugs. Between the bow thrusters and the azipods, it was a piece of cake! They were starting to tie up when we grabbed some breakfast. Oh, and my Kahlua was supposed to have been delivered to my room on the last night, but it wasn’t. I was at the guest relations desk at 5:30 the last morning, and by 8, I had my Kahlua, so happy ending there.

Getting off the ship was tons easier than when we sailed in January – much better organized. We got all our stuff and were in the car by about 9:30, and home before noon.

And I learned to use the software I’ll need when I start back to work. FCD had it loaded on his laptop, so we spent a few hours on a couple of days going over the basics, and I played with it myself a few times. I’m familiar enough that I’ll be able to start working right away on Weds.

So that’s how I spent the last of my summer. On Tuesday, I’ll take the inlaws to the airport for their morning flight. On Weds, I return to the ranks of the employed. And here are the pictures I took. No need to feign interest…

Happy Monday!

1st W00T!

Glad you had fun on the return trip. I’m working a half day tomorrow, then firing up the blender.

Blurf? Hell, it’s 0100, and I ain’t been to bed yet. Give me 5 minutes, however…

Third!

Bah! Missed the edit window again!

I have never been on a cruise like that, the whole idea simply does not appeal to me. However, the kind that involves a bunch of mad Swedish blokes cannot be anything but fun!

I am all packed for my vacation now, off to deliver the cats to the moggery later this morning then I’m catching a train to London, across town on the Tube and then another train out to the airport. Flight leaves tomorrow but I wouldn’t have time to get the cats deposited and get myself down there in the morning so I am starting my holiday a day early.

Do what the oldies tell you, and try not to trash the place while I’m gone!

BooFae - is this the San Francisco trip or did you do that already?

I love the cheesy Pirate in that photo, Moooom, and the towel chimp is adorable.

I’d like to go on a cruise, but it’s going to be a long time before I have that kind of money to spare - you see, if I go on a cruise, I’m going to have to have an upper deck suite with an ocean view, big balcony, and butler service.

I’m so jealous. We’re refinancing our house this year, so no vacation for us.

Someone put super glue in our car lock. Why would anyone do that? We are nice people damnit! I think it must have happened at hubby’s gym. I have no idea how he gets along there, but he’s such a teddy bear, I can’t imagine anyone disliking him.
The car is nice, but it’s 12 years old and paid for.

Morning. Up, caffeinated, and off to irk. I have a half day, then it’s margarita time.

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffienatin’. YAWN 'Tis 73 Amurrkin out with a predicted high of 91 and maybe rain late afternoon/tonight/tomorrow. Plus, no irk today! YAY!!!

I say up and caffienatin’ but actually I have been up for a while. I have the smoker fired up and smokin’ away. Go Me! I have two Boston <snerk> butts <snerk>, two briskets and some chikin boobs and laigs on to smoke. Plus also, I have some new N.O.T. already boiled and coolin’ off for N.O.T. sallit. The <snerk> butts <snerk> and briskets will be smoked about five hours and finished off in the oven. Then, once they are all cooled down, they’ll go in the freezer. The chikin’ shall be dindin today along with the N.O.T. sallit, some type of vegetation and rolls. Plus some for another dindin later in the week and some chikin and N.O.T. sallit which I shall take over to my next road neighbor friends’ today just cause they lurve smoked chikin, so why not. I called yestiddy and told 'em I’d bring ‘em some over when it’s done. The chikin’ takes about three hours to smoke and will be perfectly done. Hickory smoked btw. I also envision some pool time just cause.

MOOOOOOM sounds like overall y’all had a good time. Sucks about the dinin’ room though cause IME the cruise ship dinin’ room is usually so good. Glad the inlaws enjoyed themselves. I want me a towel monkey.

Picu that’s awful! Hope you’re able to do sump’n about the superglued lock.

BooFae enjoy your trip! We’ll make sure flytrap uses a coaster.

I need more caffiene and rumbly tummy wants to be fed. I should also purtify, I reckon.

Happy Monday Y’all! Happy Labor Day to all the Amurrkin Mumpers!

Morning!

sorry about the lack of dining room eats fcm at least you got away for a few days though.

boofae - have super fun!

picu - I am  for you. That is just dumb

I have huge plans for my bonus day off. Well not really. But I have been for coffee and done a bit of work - I had to wait for some systems to be unlocked after month end but get my data before they were opened back up for billing/inventory posting. I am headed to the mawl at 10AM to return a couple of dresses I got to try on for the wedding I am going to back home in the UK in 6 weeks time. Then I must grocery shop a little. We don’t need much just some fruit and veggies.

Then I will work out later and Skype the parents. mr ems is working today he is having some minor surgery tomorrow so I get to be his DD for his drugged up self. Other than that it is going to be hot here again today - triple digits! But we should be down to 80 degrees by the end of the week!

And I’m up. OK, I’ve been up about an hour anna half, but this is my first chance at my 'puter. **FCD **just left to take our truck to the shop - it’s got no power and a blinking engine light. Hope it’s not too expensive a problem - the truck has under 30K miles on it… His folks are following in the Sonata, and after they leave the truck, they’re going to a hardware store for some big bolts.

Over the weekend, my sweetie bought himself a small lathe. Yesterday, I helped him get it on the stand - oh what a job that was!! But our basement floor is really uneven, so he needs to put leveling feet on the stand. Real leveling feet apparently run from $8 each to $30 each, and he needs 8 of 'em. So he’s just going to get mega-big bolts with nuts and washers. No worries about damaging the basement floor, so the bolts will work fine. I’m not sure how he intends to install them. Alas, with his father’s help, I foresee conflict - two stubborn men with their own ideas how to attack the problem…

Tomorrow, I get to take the inlaws to the airport, and that’s a trip I’m looking forward to. Two full weeks of constant togetherness has pushed me to the brink of crazy. And I’ve learned some things about them that I find upsetting - I know the older generation grew up with more narrow-minded prejudices, but dang, some of the things they’ve said really threw me for a loop. And the crap they watch on TV causes IQ points to drip out of my ears. I figure by 10 tomorrow, they’ll be checking their bags and my life can get back to normal. And I know my family drives my spousal unit equally crazy, but this is about ME!!! :stuck_out_tongue:

**rosie **- I was going to tell you that cruises are really affordable till I saw your requirements. Yeah, that’s a bit different from our steerage-class barely-bigger-than-a-closet room. I’d love to see one of the fancy-pants suites - I suppose if I had one of them, I’d be spending less time among the unwashed masses and more on my private veranda…

Not much in the way of plans for my unofficial-last-day-of-summer. I’ve been making hats for the food pantry/homeless shelter that the AARP ladies support. I’ve got a chicken thawing for supper, and daughter will come over to spend the last evening with her grandparents. It’s too dreary to do laundry or work outside, so I’m guessing it’ll be a knitting day for me. Can’t believe I come out of retirement in 2 days…

Good morning Mumpers. I am enjoying an extra day off too. I don’t have any plans for it, not even gonna BBQ. We’ll probably just hang out here at home and get some stuff done.

I can understand the whole “togetherness” thing driving you crazy, FCM. I tend to feel that way about both sides of my family if I’m with them too long.

**picu, **the lock situation just sucks. I hate people who do assholish things like that.

Also, I hope your truck repair isn’t too expensive,** FCM.** If it’s got less than 30K miles on it, isn’t still under some kind of warranty?

More coffee…must have more coffee.

We drove down to Little Rock with my mom on Saturday, the morning after am epic family wedding. So already I was feeling a bit iffy. Inside of an hour we ran into the first knife fight with Isaac as he drifted north. MOST of the ten plus hour drive was spent in pounding rain. So at least staying alert wasn’t a problem.

My mom came down with us from the wedding to see the CatKid’s house, although they’ll be moving out in a couple months because Caterpillar is moving them BACK TO ILLINOIS!!!

:: confetti ::

Mom flies back to Tucson tomorrow where it’s actually cooler today than expected in El Poco Piedra where today’s high should hit 103. I will find a pool and a margarita forthwith.

CatDude I’ve got a pool and can make a margarita but I suppose that won’t do you much good bein’ as it ain’t in Small Boulder.

Chikin is done and the <snerk> butts <snerk> and briskets are in the oven finishin’ up. I also have smoker all cleaned up. Go Me!

I need a nap.

what’s left of Isaac is supposed to make tomorrow very dreary and humid and possibly stormy but he may be too weak for that.

picu - were you able to de-glue the lock? nail polish remover work well on super glues.

On Firday, one of the gang emailed us all about getting together tonight for dinner. The response was a resounding “meh”, but dinner may still be on - I don’t think I’ll go, though. My back is giving me much trouble today and I can’t miss work tomorrow.

A belated welcome to our Fair City.

Ah Little Rock the unknown gem, I love the place

Howdy all and Happy Labor Day

I got nothin

JIM

It hit 3 years in July, alas. We bought the truck used, and honestly, I never considered that it was covered, even tho it was only a year old and only had 13Kmiles on it. I took it in for a recall repair and it happened the engine light was on. The service manager said I was still under warranty at that point and they fixed it.

It’s probably just a coincidence, but we had the oil changed about a month ago, and we’ve hardly driven it since then, and all of a sudden, rough idle, no power, no acceleration, and flashing engine light… If we’d had the work done anywhere but our usual place, I’d be suspicious. When **FCD **dropped it off this morning (they’re closed today) he left a note listing the symptoms, then wrote: “Car broke. Paul fix.” We’ll see what Paul says tomorrow.

I just got back from a run into Leonardtown. I filled the car, got a case of FCD’s favorite wine and a bottle of the cinnamon whiskey that he likes, then stopped at the dollar store on the chance that they’d have flip-flops. No luck. Oh well. Mine got boogered up yesterday at Food Lion - they’d been patching the parking lot and I picked up bits of gravel an asphalt - far too many to clean off my $2 flip flops. I may be out of luck till next year.

The men folks are napping. MIL is watching TV. I think I’ll reassume the knit position till it’s time to shove the chicken into the rotisserie.

I bought my Expedition used as well. It had something like 12,000 miles on it when I bought it. I did spring for an extended warranty and it came in handy a couple, three times. Alas and alack, the warranty is now expired because I chose not to renew it.

Fingers crossed it’s something relatively simple, FCM.

I have been goofing off all morning. I should get something done around here. I am feeling somewhat lazy and knowing what I face tomorrow at work is adding to today’s laziness.

Early dindin has been et. Smoked chikin, N.O.T. sallit, broccoli with cheese sauce and rolls. YUM!!! My friends were excitated with the smoked chikin and N.O.T. sallit I took over to them this afternoon. Warmed my heart cockles it did! Some pool time was also had. Now it’s cloudy out and looks like it could get rainy. Here’s hopin’.

Now it’s chill out and get ready for irktime tomorrow time. All in all, though, a nice day off.
