I just finished watching it for the first time. One of the things that caught my attention (beyond, damnit, why didn’t the super Deviant think about allying with the Eternals who hadn’t been aware of The Secret, and also that the whole Deviant plot line seemed a bit wasted other than as a lever to “get the gang back together again”), was that both the Deviants and the Celestials had six pairs of eyes. The Deviants seemed to be far more closely modeled on the Celestials than the Eternals were, and I find that curious. A quick Wiki search reveals that the Celestials were rebellious against the “First Firmament”, and that makes we wonder if that was why the Deviants were able to rebel against their creator, also, since they’d been modeled on a rebel to being with. Might explain why the Eternals looked so different.
I’m also curious why Ego appeared to be human and human-sized when none of the other Celestials were, but I’m guessing that what we saw as Ego was more of an avatar or a mobile unit controlled by the planet which was the real Ego. I think.
Ego wasn’t Kurt Russel, Ego was the planet that the finale of the movie took place on. The bit of him that looked human sized was just a construct to make it easier for him to interact with mortals. At one point, the Guardians blow it up, and Ego just grows a new one.
As someone once said “a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds”. Having a good story is more important than maintaining a continuity. Having a good story is the hard part, of course.
Well, Thena is some level of insane, and the Deviant did kill/absorb her bestie/comrade-in-arms/lover/whatever and then tried to use that against her. Slicing up was not out of line, IMO.
I meant that it was an odd thing of the writers to do, to give the Eternals the realization that the Deviants are essentially fellow victims/pawns and see some humanity in one of them, and then dispatch that human-like Deviant as if nothing changed since they had been portrayed as monstrous beasts. In-story, it certainly makes sense that Thena in particular would kill it without nuance.
Yeah, that threw me, as well. What exactly was the Deviant’s plan at the end there? The Eternals were actively working to stop the Celestials from destroying the Earth, including all the surviving Deviants there… so why is the Deviant fighting the Eternals? Maybe he doesn’t realize they’ve switched sides, which, okay - it’s customary to have a fight before the team up. But, nope - there’s no effort from any of the Eternals to communicate with him, no, “Wait, we were wrong about Arishem,” they just go hammer and tongs at each other until one of them is dead.
There really was something about the film that suggested a troubled production. I know the Disney machine isn’t that transparent, to put it mildly, but has anyone heard anything about rewrites, reshoots and frantic editing?
I know there were production issues due to COVID but I haven’t been able to find anything to back that up. My Google-Fu gets me results from October that talk about the stars being exposed to it at that time.
The Wikipedia article says filming started around July 2019 and wrapped up by February 4, 2020. It sounds like the filming wasn’t affected by Covid, though post-production might have been.
How did the Deviants travel to multiple planets? Until the one started absorbing power/memories from the Eternals, they didn’t appear to have much intelligence, and they certainly didn’t have technology.
The Celestials seeded Deviants on various planets that had proto-sapient species (and a proto-Celestial implanted in the core). All was well for some indeterminate period of time (thousands of years? millions of years?), as the Deviants hunted predator species that threatened the survival of proto-sapients. Then Deviants on various worlds (including Earth) started going off-program, and hunting the sapients that were evolving instead of the predators that threatened them. At which point the Celestials created the Eternals, and sent them from world to world to exterminate that world’s Deviants, and allow that world’s sapients to flourish, and reach the critical mass necessary for the Emergence of a new Celestial.
