The Expanse season 2 episode discussion (spoilers as it airs)

I liked the scene with Alex goofing around by himself, but cans of beer in zero-g? And tipping them back to drink from them? Usually they make an attempt to get the science right, so that took me out of the moment.

It appeared as though, after opening it, he moved it forward, and then moved his head forward into the space previously occupied by the can, drinking up the droplets that were left behind.

You might get some of it out, but you can’t drink a whole beer that way. This is why Yuri Gagarin* invented bulbs for space drinking.

  • I assume it was him.

Just caught up from the last two weeks. This was a great moment. I am also pretty sure she said “fucking” at one point but her thick accent got it past the censors.

I am interested in the closer look at how Earth works in the future. It is like a Conservative’s nightmare vision come to life.

No, they drop F-bombs in season 2. I guess Syfy let it go. It’s happened more than once.

I tend not to notice swearing much, censored or not, unless the censoring is particularly egregious or the swearing especially artful. But I did take note that there was one “fucking” uttered by our Quarian admiral that, to my ear, sounded like the most scarcely censored word in the history of television. Like, they censored only some of the “u” sound, but left the rest.

Should be noted that the “ghetto” Bobby walked through is for unregistered people who as such do not qualify for basic. The author expanded a bit on this on twitter. Unregistered people are mostly when people have more babies than they are allowed.

The author also said there’s a drone flying overhead in one shot that can be heard offering amnesty for the unregistered and thus basic support (although I missed that drone broadcast myself).

People on basic live better than the ghetto, although in no way nicely.

Oddly enough I saw Earth as described in the books like a socialist utopia gone wrong, not conservative.

I just love Amos and Avasarala. They’re by far the most interesting characters in my opinion and they deliver the best lines:

With all due respect, Madame, where are you going with this?”

“Wherever I goddamn like!”

And…

“Whoever the fuck you are, stand down and let her speak.”

I literally laughed out loud when she delivered that last line.

What is equally amazing to me is she delivered these epic smackdowns in scenes where she was playing the careful and introspective diplomat and then BOOM out come the fangs.

MeanJoe

No that’s what I meant. It was a Conservative’s idea of a Liberal Future gone wrong.

The girl who testified(Bobby or something?) also dropped an uncensored “F-you!” at the end of last week.

F-bombs are flowing freely this season. Have any other non-premium cable shows down this? Magicians does it, but jokingly silences the f-bombs. I mean, they drop them freely, but find it funny to kind of silence them.

And her clothes! Her costumes are just gorgeous. She is, hands down, my favorite character on TV right now.

Ah, got you.

Agreed, but what’s the alternative to a global welfare state if technology is advanced enough that there simply isn’t enough work to go around? Government funded busy work? Banning certain technologies in favour of labour intensive alternative (ala Brave New Word? Or simply culling the excess population?

No way nicely compared to what? Obviously living standards would been to be higher than in the ghetto yet lower than what the employed caste has, but what does that mean to the audience? A welfare recipient in any developed country today has still has a higher standard of living than anyone living in Tudor England.

We’ll see how much the show goes into how it is living on Basic. Don’t know if it’s ok to post what the books describe. But consider that there is no lack of people from earth willing to relocate off-earth even with the risks.

If you haven’t read the books, you should. Because the character in the books is even better, and more foul-mouthed.

I’ve been looking for a distraction lately. The books could be just what I need.

Loved the last episode. They did a good job of showing what a bad-ass Bobby Draper is. She laid a severe beat-down on her corrupt commanding officer. That was awesome. And now she’s working for Avasarala. The show keeps getting better all the time.

One science nitpick: a gravity assist trajectory around multiple Jovian moons would take a LONG time. The Jovian system is huge. We’re talking weeks or months, not a few hours.

Yeah, that was one of the few times I had to  over the science in this show. When I saw his trajectory on the screen, I thought, “well that should take a week at least, probably more like a month or two.”

Like I said to my friend, you can have aliens, you can have near magical abilities in these aliens, and you can have a fantastic fusion drive that doesn’t quite break the laws of physics, but is something that almost certainly could never be engineered, but you mess up the orbital mechanics, and that’s a sin.

There is also the fact that it wouldn’t be a rollercoaster. The entire ship is being assisted by gravity in the exact same way, including the pilot. The only accelerations he would have felt would have been from the thrusters, which I would assume would not have enough thrust to be really noticed, not enough to actually toss you around in your seat, anyway.

Worse yet, you can’t really stop and back up, then continue the same course. But in the end, there’s just so much good about the show that I really don’t notice these things until afterwards.

Even in trousers she looks amazing. And she changed into a new outfit just to meet Mao; no wonder Cotyar was concerned out the luggage. Errinwright is going to be begging for a firing squad once Madam get’s back to Earth. And she will survive; no way she get’s killed off now. Season finale next week.
