The Gift of Life in the MMP

Living in a predominantly rural county, that sort of park isn’t a thing that I’ve been able to tell. There is one (and only one) dog park that I’ve been thinking about taking him to, just so he has other dogs to rassle with. Not that the leg lifting is a major problem - I guess I assumed it’s something boy dogs just did.

My grandson would do that when I changed him if I wasn’t quick enough with a protective cover…

FCD had a boss who strongly recommended two weeks together. He believed it took a week just to get into vacation mode. There’s a certain truth to that, I think. It’s been so long since it applied to me.

We’re starting with 76 Ferrets, heading to 100 (or 104 depending on which site you believe.) Our plans involve minimal outdoor time. I just went out and turned on the a/c in the shop since the first chore this morning will be organizing and tidying out there. Laundrying will follow. Whatever evolves beyond that should fill the day.

So, Happy Firday!!!

Up early, even for me. Woke up around 0600 and couldn’t doze off again. A relatively chill 70F this morning, so I shut down the AC for the time being. Forecast for rain the next two days.

Fed Sadie, played with her and brushed her. She is presently roosting on the arm of my chair.

This morning’s fare will be a pumpernickel bagel with avocado (assuming it’s a good one) and some scramble huevos. Then on to exercise. Maybe I’ll wash the car later; it’s looking a bit piggy.

I really need to get going on photographing things that my heirs may want (or not). They can rate them as to desirability and I can then make a list to add to the will. I’m trying to figure out what the best way to do this is, as far as posting them somewhere; perhaps send the photos a few at a time via FB messenger? Suggestions welcome. I have an uneasy feeling that they will not be interested in any of it, which means we will have a number of things that actually have value but will have no home.

0900: NWS 80 of 98, Accuweax 80 of 91, Weax Channel 80 of 94. Ick. Glad I’m not going anywhere today!

Someone (a member? a board member?) brought in red Solo cups full of raspberries yesterdays. I brought one home for The Missus. Someone said someone is bringing in five dozen farm eggs today. I don’t know if it was a joke or not, but I’m bringing in an empty egg carton just in case.

I walked twice around the park this morning instead of down the beach and back. 1.37 miles. Bacon’s cooking for a breakfast burrito. Out of shredded cheddar, so I’ll make-do with sharp cheddar slices.

Good morning all. Up early and Firday shopping has been done (prices are crazy, but I suspect y’all know that already). That was the only thing on my list for today so otherwise not much else planned. Another hot (86F now heading to 93F) and wet (Thunderstorms expected about noon) so probably will continue my ‘watching a World Cup game while I’m on a treadmill’ routine, first game is at 1pm local time. Otherwise will do my best interpretation of a sloth.

flyboy, be it bank or restaurant or store, I really do try not to stop in the last half-hour of the day. Have a few memories when I was working (I suspect most of us do).

Thanks for my snort of laughter for the day.

doggio, that’s a good voice-over too. Both are rather pedantic and superior-sounding, much like Spot.

boo fae, happy music weekend.

swampy, sounds like a big day of food prep, followed by a big day of food consumption. Enjoy both!!

I tried to get a 2-week vacation in sometime each year, then several days around Thanksgiving and Xmas and the rest when I could. Now of course, everyday is a day off…

Are those temperature estimates or Borg clones? :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Flyboy, had pancakes and bacon for breaking fast today, that should hold me into the afternoon.

And onward into the day. Have a good one all.

… fresh fruit is NOT where I thought this story was going.

The burrito was good. Three drops of the ghost pepper sauce is plenty. Lunch today will be TJ’s Just Chicken, heated in the microwave oven, and covered with sriracha sauce.

Mornin’ everyone.

It’s 59F and mostly cloudy outside. The forecast calls for morning clouds and afternoon sun, with a daytime high of 75F. Temperatures are slated to start ramping up, and by Monday, we’ll see mid-80s.

Mollie, I am very sorry about Buttercup.

FCM, I’m sorry the doctor’s news has upset FCD. I’m thinking of both of you.

BooFae, sounds like a fun weekend!

Red, I laughed at the Nelson story. Many of the pet stories are funny here. When I still had Polar, he’d watch me as I worked around my garden area, planting, transplanting, whatever. After I was done, he’d explore the whole area, sniffing at everything. Then, he’d hike his leg and pee on a particular plant. It was only one, and the rest of the season, he’d pee on that exact same plant. It was never in the same place from year to year, so I just learned that there was always the Sacrificial Plant or flower, and laughed. I still miss Polar so much.

As for male dogs lifting their legs, Polar did a bit of both, squatting and leg lifting. Buster is much the same. Captain was a leg lifter, too. Both Polar and Buster lived/live with girl dogs, so I think that might have something to do with the squatting thing. When Zeus comes to visit, Buster lifts his leg to mark the spots that Zeus has marked or peed upon.

Mmm, farm-fresh eggs would be awesome, Johnny. I hope you get some.

Yesterday morning, we went to the big orange store to get more paint supplies and another gallon of paint for the bathroom. After that, we went to the cannabis store for my husband. I hate that shit, but whatever. We came home, unloaded all the paint stuff, and then went back out to the grocery store. Got our groceries, came home, and unloaded them. By that time, it was nearly noon. Before we had left for all the errands, I had cleaned the kitchen, swept the floor, watered all the posies front and back, deadheaded or pruned anything that needed it, and picked up dog poo.

We did not end up painting yesterday, but will be doing so today. After painting, we’ll need to calk the tub area, after the paint is dry, of course.

Next, we’ll move on to the guest room, I guess.

I am still deciding on whether to buy a trundle daybed for the bonus room or just get some raised air mattresses for the grandkids. The mattresses on daybeds with trundles are rather thin, but air mattresses are always iffy. Whatever I decide, I need to do it soon.

Ah, yes, use it or lose leave. I didn’t start running into use it or lose it " until the kiddos were teenagers. By the end of my career, I racked up a ridiculous amount of use-it-or-lose-it every year, along with comp or credit hours that needed to be used. All this despite my taking two weeks of annual leave every August (which went back to the years the kids were in daycare and it would shut down). One week was always used for fun, and the next week for projects or just lounging. To burn up most of my use-or-lose, I started taking every Friday that wasn’t my RDO off from October through the end of the leave year. Additionally, I would take a week of leave around Christmas. I would also take a day or two of leave around all the long weekends throughout the year. By October, I’d have around 350 accrued annual leave hours, again, despite burning two weeks in August and taking extra days around the holidays. It was crazy. By the end of the leave year, I was sitting at exactly 240 hours, so I could carry it over.

I’m glad I don’t have to worry about burning leave hours anymore.

Welp, I suppose I should get on with the day. Please take care of yourselves.

One plant with urine burn is pretty good. I like hearing stories about the late, great Polar. He was a good boy. I also like hearing about Maisie and Buster, along with the other Mumpets.

Up, caffeinating, breakfasted and fixing to do KP. The two big things on the agenda today are a trip to the dollar sto’ and trying to install the printer drivers on my new 'puter one more time.

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

Personally I hate air mattresses. I would guess the kids aren’t heavy enough that a thinner mattress would be a big deal. Or you could always add a foam topper. That’s my vote.

We started the day bathing Otis. I think I’ve mentioned the pet store near us that has a DIY dog wash. For the princely sum of $15, they supply shampoo (choice of 4), towels, aprons, and a blow dryer. The bathing units are raised, so you’re working at waist height. They also supply a short tether that attaches to the wall, holding the dog in place while you wash. Such a deal!!!

I helped FCD in the shop, sweeping and vacuuming. Then I started the laundry. When I swap loads, I’ll make a run to Aldi - we need milk, and Daughter’s crew is coming over with Chinese for supper, so I’ll get dessert. They’re also bringing sparklers for the kids to set off - our yard is better for that than theirs.

OK, I need to do a pantry inventory before going.

Happy Friday morning! I’m extra happy due to the federal (and corporate) holiday. I’m still utterly swamped at work, but yesterday I decided to leave early-ish and give myself the rest of the day + all of today off. I’ll jump back into the fray sometime this weekend, as there are things I need to do that really can’t wait until Monday, but for now I’m doing my best to not think about anything on that list.

Sorry for the drive-by post earlier this week, but thanks to those who offered support! HusbandBFF and WifeBFF finally talked to his doctor yesterday: he confirmed the biopsy results they saw online, but also reminded them that even aggressive prostate cancer is highly survivable. The next step is a PET scan next week (to determine whether the cancer has spread), then they see the doc in a month to discuss treatment options. Neither WifeBFF nor I worry about HusbandBFF’s life being threatened: we’re more concerned about possible treatment side effects (many of her current health issues are permanent side effects from her breast cancer treatment 10+ years ago), and also his mental health. He’s already a very, very anxious person – unhealthily so – who refuses to talk to anyone or consider taking anything, so she and I wonder how this added stress might manifest.

Like many other places, the DC area is in the midst of a heat wave: at 11:14am it’s sunny and already 94°F (“feels like 106”), with an expected high of 101. Tomorrow will be similar, before we finally get some storms on Sunday (though it’ll still be hot). It definitely makes me not want to leave the house, but I have a tattoo removal appointment at 2pm that I don’t want to skip and I should really go to the grocery store afterwards (I’ve been putting that off for days). So, I’ll go do those two things this afternoon.

I set my thermostat to 75 so I don’t wind up having to sell a kidney to pay the power bill, and the temp upstairs ranges from 80-83 degrees. Luckily I already had quality fans in every room, which makes spending time up here bearable. I’ve even been able to sleep in the bedroom just fine, with only a top sheet[1] and the floor fan on “high.” The downstairs/TV room couch is standing by, though, with its pull-out sleeper cushion.

I’ve been at my computer since around 7am, and even with a fan running I’m done with with the upstairs heat for the day: after this post I’ll head down to the kitchen for lunch and some Lego building, which will take me until it’s time to head to my appointment. Yesterday I finished the Dumbledore’s Office book nook, and today I’ll start the NYC/Big Apple set.

Bailey used to bring a toy up on the bed or couch, drop it, then bark at it for a while before eventually getting down to get it. I managed to capture one such time on video, and it’s one of my favorite memories.

:crossed_fingers:

Awww. :frowning:

  1. for some reason, I always need to have something covering my legs ↩︎

Got out of Aldi for $16 and change - a new low record for me!! Then on the way home I stopped at the local farm stand and got peaches, 'maters, and half a dozen ears of sweet corn - all for $5! And my car showed 100 Ferrets on the drive home. ugh.

Third load in the washer, second in the dryer, first folded and stowed. I need to do some tidying - the counters are getting out of control!!

Chambord is made of raspberries so it is fruit….

Forgot to share this tidbit - in the frozen food case at Aldi, I saw a box of 4 ice cubes for sale - for $4.99. I looked twice - I’m pretty sure they weren’t reusable cubes, but I might have missed that. It had to be. How, um, interesting, must you be to buy FOUR ice cubes?

I dunno…

Now there’s a thought, raspberry liqueur. I do happen to have a lot of spare raspberries at the moment… And I should have some blackcurrants, shortly…

The Incredible Bulk Load(s)
The other early clerk called out, so there was a lot of extra work. There was a 30 box bulk order of shoes that was to come off the futres, and go out today, except they started re futuring themselves. Then I had to drag it back to the clerk stations, because the Supreme Shouting Officer doesn’t like to see boxes up front. Then they came off futures for..reasons, so I had to drag the cart back up front, future them, and scan them. By the time all that was done, it was time to help on the 300 Slide. On the way, one of FT Sups and 3 PT sups had a girl corraled, and the FT Sup was talking to somebody on the phone. I assume somebody got promoted to felon today. After the sort was wrapped up, I had to do a return on a bulk load where the guy ordered 20 20"x"20" boxes of stuff, and moved. Then I dragged that up to the front to go back tonight. then there was a refused bulk load to return, and I dragged that cart up front, Then they brought a hunge mass of damages, and I had to fill a cart of wreck furniture and appliaces, and drag that one up front. And there were seven broken mirrors. That’s getting Sharknado-ed in South Dakota level of unlucky. We wrapped up at noon, and it was already 100 Ferrets. I drove to Trader Joes for some roasted frozen corn. There was an ambulance fire truck, and 2 cop cars stopped at a construction site on the way, and looks like they were helping some guy off of the dirt. So some moron is making people work outside in this heat. I mean, apart from, UPS, FedEx, the USPS, and a few thousand others. But I’m off for the weekend, and laundry is washed(waiting to do the drying until tonight.

All you need is a still!

Looks like my kind of festival.

We have hit 100f so far today. I did read the book over getting things done. I am now considering the giant run the building does on Friday nights. 2 shuttle runs go to the giant at 23rd street.

The shuttle is not running tomorrow. Aside from the holiday, there is not an easy way to get to our building. It is difficult now as they keep increasing the barriers.

Poor Nelson! Did he become a fountain when he fell over?

Those are specialty clear ice cubes. Can’t make them at home and wouldn’t use them every day, but I will probably buy a pack for Hubs when his next mystery booze box arrives. (fancy pants bourbon)

eta: you use them in one of these VEVOR Ice Ball Press Kit, Aircraft Al Alloy Ice Press with Ice Block Mold, Large Mat, Tong, Drip Tray, One Glass, Round Ice Ball Maker 2.4"/60 mm Ice Sphere, for Whiskey, Cocktail on Party & Holiday | VEVOR AU

And if we learn that they have been refrozen, I will also be here talking about returning ice cubes because they weren’t fancy enough for us.

I harvested our garlic today. It looks like my dreams of being a successful garlic farmer are still far in the future. I planted 40 cloves to get 7 rather small bulbs. “Needs more sun” appears to be the cause of all of my current gardening failures back here.

This is the third summer we have been here and every year there have been a few really hot weeks, so this doesn’t seem any different to me. The birds say otherwise, they are all hopping around with their beaks open. I put a pie plate full of water out for them, nobody seems interested. I also have been putting ice cubes in the fushia pots and the lesser goldfinches are hanging out there. Not on the ice, just close.

I am so bored. Just this much typing is enough to hurt and texting is horrible because I’m used to using my right hand. I’m sure it could be much worse, but I’m still not happy, damnit!!!

Today was weight day and it really knocked the starch out of me, so I got nothing done other than noodle online.

Well, I did contact the art gallery where we bought a piece some years ago. The artist (Rick Bartow, a Native American) died some years ago, and as a result his already sought after pieces have gone up in value. I figured I should get an estimated value for insurance coverage. They were very nice about it and I’m waiting for the valuation to come back. It may be headed for a museum at some point, as my kids would likely use it for firewood.

Coolio Sr is repositioned at a better angle and performing better. I’m in the office/dining room and he’s in the LR, and I can already feel coolness on my ankles after 10 minutes of being in the new position. Frankly it was only about 5 degrees of slope.

I don’t feel like cooking, I don’t really want to go back out into the heat to go somewhere, and nobody will bring food to me, well Doordash will, but I ain’t paying $50 for dinner.
