Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off today. It’s currently 79 degrees Ferret Height(26.111 Centipedes). The high is supposed to be 103 today, with a heat index of 112. I plan on hunkering down, as the only way I’d go out in that is is if you paid me, or there was free beer.
AI:
Ceylon is the former colonial name of the island nation now officially known as Sri Lanka.

Us too - 76-78 Ferrets indoors. Plus our thermostat has a Circulate setting, so the fan comes on periodically - it seems to help.
But you can still manage The Look, right? Perhaps a Scathing Look?
Like this?
Today starts with 77 Humid Ferrets, possibly reaching 100, also with possible t-boomers. We have no real plans. I got a bunch of yarn delivered the other day - I may or may not start on more lap blankets. The only must-do is getting the bucket of dead fireworks bits out of the yard before Otis goes out - I shall tend to that after posting this.
So, Happy
or Happy Saturday as applies.
If we paid attention to every anniversary of former colonies going independent we’d never get anything done… Mind you, I’m not getting much done today anyway.
There’s laundry out on the line, so I’m hoping it stays dry (the forecast is doing that obnoxious thing where as each hour arrives, the risk of rain in that hour increases.. It was gonna be dry all day when I started).
I’m vaguely thinking of going out to the shops or a garden centre, but that requires effort and slobbing on the couch does not. I may go tomorrow, when it’s supposed to be raining all day, and just potter in the garden a bit today, or I might just procrastinate until it’s too late to do much.
It’s July 4th, which is Independence Day here in the USA. It usually means picnics, parades, and big public events. Some of those were called off this year because of the heat.
Something woke me up at 2:00 AM. I got up and got mostly dressed before realizing what time it was. When my actual alarm went off at 7:00 AM, I got dressed again, started the coffee, and stumbled in here to begin tapping out something about Bertha Varnation Day.
It’ll be cooler today, a mere 86 Ferrets. Instead of extreme heat warnings, we have a flood warning.
FCMom, dogs are into scent marking, so it’s probably okay with Otis that his front legs smell like his pee. That’s no comfort to you, of course.
I got a scam video call on my tablet yesterday. Some guy with megamillions in his url rattled on about prizes, money, and cars before I shut him off. It was an interesting variation of the Same Old Thing. Usually, crap like that comes to my phone instead of my tablet. So, my usual grumbles about crim’nals making us leery of answering our phones.
So, be happy, be independent, and have a day!
Good morning.
It’s 54F and partly cloudy at the moment. The forecast calls for morning clouds and afternoon sun, with a daytime high of 75F.
JtC, I hope the social appearance makes you feel much better than you anticipate. I can understand why you don’t want to go, though.
Swampy, I hope your gathering goes well, and you all enjoy yourselves. Sounds like quite the feast!
Catglove, I like museums. That storm sounds crazy, but good on you for taking care of business. I am glad, however, that a neighbor stopped by to help.
I finished the last coat of paint in the bathroom yesterday, but unfortunately, I had to do some touch-ups because my husband’s taping job wasn’t the best. Not the end of the world, I got it done, the bulbs were replaced in the light fixture bar, and now we can move on to the next room. We still need to calk, but we’ll have to buy some first.
Bright Tree, I’m glad the psyllium husk meds are working for Ollie.
I am so glad it’s cooler here than where a great many of you are living. I whine (whinge) when the temps exceed 75°F or 80°F. We’ve endured triple-digit heat around here, and it was awful. My house does not have AC, and most houses in my area (until recently) were built without it. So we all suffer or huddle in rooms with window units.
I hope you all get some cooler temps soon.
The booms were loud, long, and intense yesterday. Maisie was a mess, even with the tranqs. It’s been a looooong week.
In a bit, I’ll start prepping the tater salad that I offered to bring to my son’s place. I hope things are quieter where he lives. We’ll probably head down there late morning or early afternoon.
I’ll also water the posies again today.
We’ve decided we’ll probably get a sleeper sofa for the bonus room. I was looking at some of those fold-out types, but I dunno, I think I need to go with something with a real mattress in it. There is no way to get a good quality sleeper sofa here in time for the grandkids, so we’ll go with air mattresses for the time being. The kids are both under 10, so they’ll be fine.
The desk dilemma has been solved, too. My husband will get rid of his janky upstairs desk and use mine. At least, that’s the plan for now. I still haven’t broached moving my computer upstairs, so I could have my own space. On the other hand, because the bonus room has so much more space, he uses it while wearing the VR headset. So, it truly wouldn’t be my space. It’s kind of annoying. Decisions, decisions.
I guess I’d better get going. Things to do before the booms start around here. When the booms start, Maisie sticks to me like glue, making it difficult to get anything done. Thundershirts don’t work either. She hates her Thundershirt.
Please take care of yourselves, and stay cool and hydrated!
78 and no rain. A new ice age!
Mopped the floor, which inspired me to launder.
Walking to church for lunch. No bus’s today. I hate all holidays, everything must shut down for no reason.
Eating a salami and cheese sandwich for breakfast.

It hit 87 Ferrets before 10AM!!! But, high temps will start going down from here, theoretically. Next week shouldn’t get into the 90s - we shall see.
I’ve watered my veggie planters - there are 3 more cukes ready to be harvested, but all the cherry 'maters are still green - no sign of even a blush. Maybe they don’t like being confined to planters?? No biggie - I had the seeds, so it’s not like I spent anything on them this year.
FCD has run to Lowes - I think he’s insane, but whatevs. I’ve been looking at vacations in Shetlands - we would like to go back there for more than a single day port stop. I’m probably just dreaming, but dream I shall.
Glad to be rid of our imperialist oppressors! (makes two-fingered gesture)
(grin)
~drinks tea in your general direction~
'Twas indeed.
I wonder if there’s any left - tonight is Long Night AND a holiday weekend. Yikes.
Worked for Christopher Columbus.
Thanks!
Okay, this made me giggle.
Took me a second. Well played.
Thx for reminding me, imma bring a cheap Lipton tea bag to work and microwave the water in a cardboard deli cup. Just for you!!! Mwah-hah-haaaahhhh!
(Hey, that’s how I made my last several cuppas.)
Happy 250th birthday, America!
Trying times – even maddening, dangerous, heartbreaking times – just mean that work is needed. Today I appreciate both our history and our potential, and I’m still happy to be an American/live here.
I like fireworks (in person, not on TV) but will not be leaving the house for the remainder of this heatwave, so I’ll mark the occasion by re-watching Hamilton and 1776…at some point. They are each ~2.5 hours long, so viewings require planning!
Today marks 1 month in the new house. So far so good, and I think the extra monthly rent + utility costs will be worth it.
Today also marks 28 years since I moved from Maryland to Virginia, for my first tech writing job. It was my first “real” job since graduating from college – vs the temping I’d been doing for the previous five years – with benefits and everything. At the time, I figured I’d stay for 2-3 years and then move to Colorado or New Mexico or something…ha!
I’ve now lived here longer than everywhere else combined (CA, TX, NJ, Germany, England, PA, and MD). Northern Virginia/DC is definitely home.
At 10:45am it’s sunny and 91°F (“feels like 98”) outside – on its way to triple digits again – and 81° in my home office. I just had to turn the fan speed up. After this post I’ll take a shower, then go down to the kitchen for lunch and Lego building. There’s a 50% chance of storms around dinnertime, and a lower chance again tomorrow night…but it’s supposed to only hit 82 on Monday. ![]()
That’s some serious braggin’ right there!
This sounds like they will trade you $5 that you can spend anywhere for $5 you can only spend at their store…how is that a deal/what am I missing??
I get curious about such things, so I had to Google them: sometimes cutesy menu item names are just annoying, but I think I’d have to get a “Wham Bam Thank You Ham” just because! ![]()
I can buy $5 worth of food on my food stamps and get $5 worth of non food merch I couldnt ordinarily afford.
Tarnation!
I need a few things for tomorrows beef stew, so I hit Teeter, since it was only 90 out. Sign on the way:

I hated holidays when in retail, because I had to work extra. But it does suck if you actually need to go somewhere and do something.
It took you this long?
Congratulations!
I don’t remember any questions about allergy shots, but it’s been a long time since I donated. A+ blood is not needed as much, plus I couldn’t donate due to having a dental implant. Switzerland just changed their rules in February, but now I would have to wait until 12 months after surgery (that was September), but then there’s the rule about waiting until 4 months after a colonoscopy, which means I theoretically could donate blood for Halloween.
Probably still won’t - they have enough problems getting enough blood for testing.
This intrigues me. After my colonoscopy results I’ve decided I need to eat less ultra-processed food, or at least stop having in the house. I found another one of his books on the library, and put a hold on it - sounds like a good idea.
I read this in Foghorn Leghorn’s voice. ![]()
@Mollie_Magill I wanted to congratulate you on your board name change
But it’s be one of those weeks, so I you still get the congratulations, but also commiserations on the loss of Buttercup. I think that was the first thing I learned about you, that you had a house bunny.
Last weekend’s highs were at body temp, which is too darn hot for buildings which are built to keep in the heat. This weekend is far more comfortable - just getting up to 29°C/80°F - and the low this morning was 15°C/59°F, which is wonderful for sleeping. And I can think.
This morning we did garden work, baking, grocery shopping, cleaning, and I even tried on clothes that were delivered yesterday. They all fit, but I think their idea of mid-rise is a bit higher than what I consider mid-rise. Close enough, and now I have a pair of light blue jeans which I prefer for summer.
Tried dry brining the salmon for lunch today, which really worked out well. I did use the oven, but it was already warm from the blueberry loafs I made earlier, and it makes less of mess than pan-frying salmon. Still have more things on my to-do list, but I am a bit lazy. Never do today what I could put off until tomorrow, right?
Have a happy and safe Saturday.
In process; the potatoes were boiled and now cooling, the eggs have been hard boiled; need to wash/vinegar then chop/dice veggies. Load of cold water wash is probably done and I should take out of washer and hang up. Have been watching the Swiatek/Eala match; they’re now in a tiebreak for the first set. Laundry hung up; there are 10 pairs of cold weather socks on line; when I take them down, I’ll put in the winter clothing storage box.
turns out we got off easy; no damage other than to tree. There were 100+ yr old trees that fell, one 2 blocks away, and squished/totalled a number of cars, one with a gent inside but luckily he got out unscathed other than quite shooken (is too a word) up.
yes, it’s the 4th of July, but I’m not about to use the word that normally precedes Birthday or New Year in a greeting. hey, metalmouse gave me an idea, perhaps I’ll wish people a Grumpy 4th of July.
I can’t even imagine how huge that thing must be; that’s 4 gallons, kinda like one of those huge pails of pickles that hamburger joints buy.
ugh, the fireworks last night were still going on at 10:45 when I was attempting to fall asleep.
Laughed in the back of my throat with my lips tightly pressed together, now slight smile. ![]()
nice to see you dicey; seems like it’s been awhile. One of my daughter’s best friends has been living in Spain since last September; she’s having the time of her life. Last week she went on vacation in Switzerland on a art group excursion. I think the highlight of the trip for her was going windsurfing through the mtns. Of course, she did it tandem with an experienced person who handled the controls.
Morning all on fake rubies, diamonds, sapphires, and emeralds Day (Four Jewel Lie. Hot again (82F heading to 91). but at least I slept through the first 8 hours of it. Have broken fast and done my spider solitaire to get the brain cells more or less alert, but outside of that and maybe visiting the gym early (the close at 4pm) to watch soccer while walking, nothing else is planned.
Do need to start planning for my ‘second vacation’ up to Cedar Point and Mammoth Cave with a couple stops in-between, making a packing list and ‘to-dos’ is always a good idea for me. Have got mail stopped at least. Leaving Thorsday, so not that far away.
JtC, I always imagine myself (or doggio in a situation much like described by Snoopy in the old comic Peanuts: Google Image Result
red, thanks for the suggestion, Huntsville has an art museum too but probably much smaller than the Frist.
swampy, to a fine day of frolicking and feasting.
boo fae, enjoy the music and friends.
Nut, ‘only’ and 15% chance of rain here, after 3 days of afternoon thunderstorms, so we’ll see if the odds are in my favor…
Knots, don’t get a lot of stuff like that, probably just don’t use my phone enough. Still get calls about buying my house now and then…
Taters, hope the negotiations on workspace come out better than the USA-Iran negotiations…you could always threaten to blockade his VR Room… ![]()
FCM, I also had one day in the Shetlands as a port stop and also wish I had had more time. Hope you can find something workable.
Oopsie, 1776 is one of my favorite films, will have to see if it’s on some channel today. And it predicted this holiday, as it most certainly is “Hot as Hell in Philadelphia!” And happy moving anniversary, I last moved in 2003 and probably will be thinking about moving again in a couple of years, but 25 years in one place is pretty good.
Good!
And now I can’t get it out of my head…
And back to the day’s offerings. Everyone have a good day.
Cookie, hope the valuation is pleasing to your ears (and your finances).
As it turns out, the piece has increased in value by $7,000 since we bought it.
Now we need to take a closer look at other pieces we’ve purchased over the years. If the fucking movers hadn’t broken that glass bowl and then wouldn’t pay it’s value. . .don’t get me started. We still have the problem of what to do with all this art. Museums tend to want pieces that are from local sources and most all of ours is specific to the PNW and Alaska. Maybe the MIA will be interested.
En-ee-weigh: another hot one brewing in MSP today. We’ll likely not venture out. Maybe some rain tomorrow.

A few years ago, local roadworks stuck up a sign saying;
‘Cyclist Dismout’
I’m assuming it was some kind of typo or regional dialect for ‘moot’, as in ent moot, but presumably a dysfunctional one. I didn’t see any cyclists mooting or dismooting though.
Mind you, I also lived in Bristol during this glorious memorial to inattention.
