I haven’t watched the grammys in ages, am tonite because a friend is up for two; Best Historical Recording and Best Liner Notes; “Good For What Ails You; Music of the Medicine Shows 1926-1937” Announced earlier this afternoon; he didn’t win, but, it’s a very small record company here in NC, so to be nominated for two is amazing. And, deserved, a great record!
So now, i’m watching to see if I can catch a glimpse of em in the audience, but, I’m really enjoying it, Surprise! love to see the Dixie Chicks bounce back from that idiotic crap they had to deal with…yay, they just won another! And, so glad to see Irma Thomas win Best Contemporary Blues Album for her post Katrina NOLA record.
This Grammy production is pretty tight, and, I do detect a “Take It Back” political tone. Thanks be.
I didn’t have the patience or stomach to sit through the whole thing. (Sweet lord, I’m so old.) Did the Police do another song, or was “Roxanne” the only number?
Big night for the Dixie Chicks. Can’t wait for Bill O’Reilly to come on and tell his fans that all this proves that the music industry is run by godless, unpatriotic, baby-killing, secular progressives who hate America.
I was a Police fan back in the day, and that performance just left me dry. I Am getting Old…what got me whupped up was the rap artist who had the big production number halfway through…who was that? That dance was great. Loved the hooded dancers anonymous, then breaking to the light of that song.
And, I’ve always thought Christina Aguilara as so so, but she really did a great job with JB’s “A Man’s World”.
I enjoyed Carrie Underwood’s performances. I liked her on “Idol” and thought she was better yet tonight. I don’t think she mangled anything. Can’t dance, though, and looks funny standing half leaned back.
My reaction to Christina Aguilara was WOW! I hadn’t really heard her before. I did read a review of her latest album that praised her pipes, and I can see why.
Anything that upsets O’Reilly’s ignorant idiots is ok by me. I haven’t watched the Grammys for…geez, I can’t even remember the last time I watched the Grammys. The music never ever has anything to do with me, and none of my favorites ever get much or any recognition, so years go by and I don’t even realize they’re on or have been on. This year though, with “Crazy” (which I found months before it got any attention), the Dixie Chicks, and Imogen Heap being nominated, I had to watch. I wasn’t interested in big portions of it, but for the first time ever in my entire life, the song I wanted to win the big prizes, won. It’ll never happen again.
I missed the Christina Aguilara because I was fixing dinner. I’ll have to go back and check it out.
Have you heard much Bob Wills? I used to be a huge Bob Wills fan, and I cringed at her rendition (I’ve never watched American Idol so I have no history with her). And shame on them for shirking Wills for an extra dose of the Eagles. Everyone’s heard those Eagles songs, but Bob Wills is more unknown and deserved better treatment. And if they were going to have a tribute to the Eagles, why not have Don Henley sing, since he was there?
I’m sure Carrie’s a nice person. I have no idea, but I just saw a pretty girl with a nice voice, nothing special to my ears. Her voice was all wrong for Bob Wills too, too smooth and bland. I wish they’d let someone else with a real voice sing it.
Anyone know what was with that special cheering section in front of the stage for all the performances? I wonder if people were paid to be there.
I just went back and saw Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” performance because I missed it coming home from the laundrymat. I hate it when they do the slow version live. I don’t know why they think that’s a good idea but whatever. It’s a great song either way.
Yes, I’m familiar with Bob Wills and Tommy Duncan’s singing of “San Antonio Rose”. I guess it’s a matter of taste, as I was quite happy with her rendition. What saddened me about the number was that Johnny Gimble didn’t really do anything. I don’t know if was because he couldn’t, or they didn’t let him. Even so, I’m glad he was included, and I’m glad they got at least one Wills song on there. My perception is that the Grammys have such a pop/rock/r&b orientation that’s it’s a minor miracle to have even that much real country music (first time I’ve watched it, though).
I grew up with Patsy Cline’s version and then back-assward discovered Bob Wills through her, so I suppose I’m not being fair. You’re right, it was surprising that even one real country song was featured.
Here’s a video of Patsy singing the song on what looks like the Grand Old Opry, though it’s not identified. Mr. Wills himself is there playing the fiddle and ah-ha’ing. Man I love Patsy Cline.
Bob Wills cracks me up. Here’s a video of his getting all surreal on the singer (my mind’s a blank as to his name, though he’s identified as “Tommy”) singing San Antonio Rose.
The guy who sang the Eagles songs sucked. Talk about a completely soulless voice. If he could sing an octave higher, maybe he could be a chipmunk or something, but as a rock singer he bites the big one.
John Mayer can play guitar. Get away from the MOR, John, and do more of the “John Mayer Trio” stuff. Big talent.
Other than that… whatever. I liked the opening by the Police. That’s about it.
Notice how marginalized Rock music is now? I remember when the Grammy’s were 40% rock, 40% country, and 20% R&B. Now it’s about 60% R&B, 30% country and 10% rock.
The Eagles dude was from Rascal Flatts, a new country band I don’t like either. (and I like country) You might have heard their big hit “Me and my Gang”
And Carrie didn’t help much with “Life in the Fast Lane”.
Oh, as an aside, “Britney” (Crotch baring no talent bimbo whose mother didn’t know how to spell Brittany) Spears, who was Christinas’ poptart rival in the '90’s, is coming out with a new album this spring, and apparently thinks she can reclaim her title as pop queen.
Somehow I had my head under a rock and didn’t realize the show was on last night. I would’ve been all teary and sniffely for my beloved Chicks. We just caught them in concert a couple of months ago, and they were fantastic, as is their latest album. Rock on with your bad selves, girls!!!
I’m extremely interested in what they’ll produce next.
Crazay had the best combination of critical and commercial success and should have won song or record of the year, whichever it was. Of course, without sampling, it would not have been as popular or as good.
And to think, several years ago, people were comparing Christina Aguilera to Britanny Spears- hilarious.
