The Great Freeze-Out (US weather)

SoCal? Paradise? Not in my world!

It’s actually not really cold here. I was out today, and was kind of surprised at how balmy it was. Temp is around 20ish.

Of course, it’s been snowing for… hmm… 5 days straight, about 6-8"/day. And we had a bunch the week before, too. Weather report says it’s gonna snow the next 4 days, too.

Good thing I like snow. My yard is absolutely gorgeous. The only bad thing is that with the icky yukky food poisoning/gastrointestinal thing both Mr. Athena and I have, there’s not much playing in the snow going on.

We often go for ice cream at Dairy Queen in winter - and we’re not the only ones in there. Blizzard cravings know no season!

Not the people in Florida!

It currently is, and has been, unusually cold across a lot of the US. Kansas City has been below 0 F as many times in the last month than some whole winters I remember in Upstate New York. That ain’t right

So true! When I woke up Saturday morning the temperature was -26. My husband and I had to take a trip to the Twin Cities that day and on the way home we stopped at Dairy Queen for ice cream.

Yes, pollution, horrible traffic, and total lack of culture. Mmmm…paradise…

I’ll take freezing in Michigan any day of the week.

Not to brag but…(oh what the hell! :D) according to this map, I’m officially in the warmest part of the continental United States!

I realize that many of you are in areas that typically find you in the negative section of the thermostat at this time of year but for people like me it is REALLY FREAKING US OUT.

It’s just under 30 here (in Mississippi) right now and my first honest reaction every time I walk outside is “what the fuck is this?” like someone seeing technology or art for the first time. I don’t like it. I don’t like it at all. I was born and raised in the deep south and I am simply unsuited to this type of weather. 90 + with high humidity? I can take it. This is insane. And of course we’re all red faced and chapped because I usually don’t take a coat with me because it’s normally not needed. You can be damn sure I have a new long wool coat now! Any my kids have these huge coats and hats too! It’s just wow cold. I don’t like it. I don’t like it at all.

Colorado has managed to be just on the good side of the nasty weather the midwest and east (and south now) has been getting this winter. It was around 40°F today and tomorrow it is forecast to be in the mid to upper 40’s. The cold slides in on Wednesday and Thursday is going to be very cold (9°), but it moves out quickly and we’ll be back in the 40’s on the weekend.

We’ve had snow, but in manageable ammounts (one October storm notwithstanding), and one stretch of cold that lasted about four days, but it was much milder than what the midwest got.

I think my area of Mississippi hit 31 degrees. It flurried a bit. As soon as it started snowing, I changed into my tennis shoes, grabbed my jacket and MP3 player, and went for a walk. It felt GOOD.

Warmer than normal out here in Oregon. No snow yet this year, at least not where I am.

Right now it’s 46 degrees just outside Orlando. I usually jog or ride my bike on Monday nights, but tonight I’m sitting inside getting fatter because I can’t go out there. I just can’t. I know 46 might not seem all that cold to some of you, but many of us down here don’t have warm clothing, and it’s hard to find. Yesterday I went shopping for a warm sweater and couldn’t find one. So . . . brrrr.

Very cold here. It usually only lasts a few days then it gets milder for a while. Been below freezing for about the last two weeks with no end in sight and more snow on the way. We also had one of the wettest summers in a long time.

I’m getting older and I think that plays a big part, but I honestly don’t think I’ve ever been this damn cold in Florida. My hands are really aching; I guess they would have fallen off if I were still in South Dakota.

cold suxs in florida…I have only one set of cold clothes for lack of space.

not like I sweat in em they stay clean…its COLD.

It’s around 10F out here in Seoul. We just had a lot a snow dumped on us.

On Christmas weekend, the forecast said a flurry of snow. Sunday afternoon, out of nowhere, it snowed like there was no tomorrow. Traffic everywhere was at a standstill - it took my parents almost three hours to drive from my place to theirs, when it usually takes less than one.

On New Year’s Eve, we were told to expect another bout of heavy snow. The entire city held its breath and waited, but all we got was a light flurry.

Over the weekend, the weather people told us we’d get another light dusting. Instead on Sunday night we got the worst snowfall ever recorded in Seoul. The subway trains on Monday were terrible - people packed in so tightly I had to squirm around just so I could breathe.

I really hope that’s it for the time being. Having to trudge to work in a blizzard is no fun.

In years past (brag brag) it’s been -20 degrees and enough snow to bury the car in the driveway. We are fortunate that it seldom snows much in November and December any more, but since January 1 it hasn’t stopped snowing. The fine, blowing, building-up kind, and it’s predicted we will be socked in again NEXT weekend, too. So I’m hoping for a break the next couple of days so I can go shopping for my mother and my own household. Cat food, human food, TP, coffee, milk, booze, rock salt for driveway, gas for snowblower…the usual.

True that, true that. Once it hits about 80F I grumble and bitch and generally just meltdown. And it’s not really humid here. I can deal with the cold, but in the summer I just want to hide with some AC.

Electrically heated boots. Mittens with three inner fleece layers. A parka that is the size of a small igloo, a face mask, and electric blower goggles. A remote car starter and winter thermostat. A -35C sleeping bag and a couple of inches of closed cell pads.

Might as well be comfortable. And remember, kids, always sauna with a cute friend.

Blizzards for the blizzard?

Hell, now I’m craving a Peanut Buster Parfait. And our DQ closed an hour ago!

I passed a restaurant in northern Michigan that was advertising frozen custard. The parking lot was empty of all but snow. I don’t know if that means it was too cold for the Yoopers, or it was not cold enough for them – you never can tell with those folks.
