Round 1 consists of 128 head-to-head matchups between the 256 randomly seeded movies nominated as Top 10 Favorites. Since there are 128 matchups it’s going to take me a while to post all of them so please refrain from commenting until Match 128 has been posted. Only cinematic releases are included - there are no miniseries, made for TV or straight to video films. Vote your conscience, but if you’re on the fence here are some guidelines: The intent here is to choose movies based on your personal subjective preferences, not objective qualities. These are favorite movies, not best movies. In other words, which film would you rather watch if given the 2 choices?

Voting will remain open for an undetermined period of time to maximize participation. When no votes have been cast for a few days, I will post a last call to close voting and tally up the winners. For scoring purposes in the tournament, each vote will count as one point to assist with ranking the results. Each round will be an elimination round.

Some of these hurt and some are pairing movies I don’t want to ever watch again.

#4 though really hurt. Hot Fuzz vs Aliens. I love both of these and felt bad about not having them on my list.

This was tough! I’ve seen them both multiple times and they’re not genre-comparable. (though both involve a strong-willed outsider motivating an enforcement team)

I didn’t vote if I hadn’t seen both movies.

#34 is like a knife through my heart.

I vote The Princess Bride which was on my list, but Little Shop of Horrors was on my top 20.

Oh shit, Princess Bride is in 2 matches. #8 & #34

I found The Shining vs Casablanca and Animal House vs Moonrise Kingdom to be the toughest choices. In a lot of cases, I hadn’t actually seen either movie, but I often voted based on “I have at least heard of this movie, and think I would like to see it someday”.

Was a little tough for me.

The Shining is great, but Casablanca is for me one of the best ever, one of the most quotable ever. It had the ultimate Hollywood (and real world) villains in it. (The Nazi). It has War, Romance & Bromance and Comedy .

I didn’t vote for any matchup where I was not familiar with both, no matter how much I liked/disliked the other one.

My tough matchups so far are Fight Club vs The Cabin in the Woods, and The Usual Suspects vs Apocalypse Now. Those all deserve a longer run.

The tough one for me was Fight Club and the Cabin in the Woods. I went with the latter because it is more re-watchable.

My Cousin Vinny vs The Godfather is the standout “neither of these should miss the 128 cut”
