I guess by definition I was bound to be disappointed either way, but I am astonished that Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan lost in this round. It is by far the best Star Trek movie that has ever been made.

I disagree. Star Trek IV (The Whales) was the best and most successful. Lots of humor and outside of the time travel special effect, has aged very well. Also Galaxy Quest is better, so clearly I like the ones with a lot of humor. Wrath of Khan is #3 in my opinion.

Part of Wrath of Khan not aging well, is Spock’s death can never have the impact it did the first time.

Star Trek IV was fun, but crossed the line into campiness, IMHO. And besides the time travel silliness, you had “transparent aluminum,” Spock as a hippy, “where are the nuclear wessels?”, mind-melding with whales…

But again, it was definitely a fun movie. Although not as dramatic and moving as TWoK, in my opinion.

I’d rank the three movies you mentioned as follows:

  1. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
  2. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
  3. Galaxy Quest
