Check User CP -> Edit Options -> Private Messaging. Do you have the box next to “Receive Private Messages only from Contacts and Moderators” checked? If so, that would prevent anyone else from messaging you, I assume even in reply to a message you sent.
This is what stands out to me as a possibility. Could be wrong though.
Buy some cards anyway. There’s sure to be another go-round and cool cards are always neat to get.
